Blizzard - MB080U3S-1SB - USB 3.0 & eSATA External HDD Enclosure

External enclosures are a great way to have high capacity data storage on the go. Data can also be a critical factor for users in the media business or who work with data centers. Some of the top tier hard drive companies have made their own all-in-one enclosure with hard drives included. However, one of the known major causes of hard drive failure is due to excessive heat buildup caused by a lack of a proper cooling system. Also, a majority of hard drive manufactures only allow a one-year warranty on their all-in-one external hard drives. This can be fatal for someone who has just lost their data and has to spend a significant amount of money in order to recover their data. There are other external enclosures in the market that provide a cooling system to help prevent this, but the physical placement of the cooling system does not always allow for the optimal airflow to cool the hard drive. Going above and beyond, the MB080U3S-1SB Blizzard stands in stark contrast the other systems, and is the next generation of external enclosures dedicated for maximum performance in cooling.

Elegantly Designed Hardware

The Blizzard has a uniquely designed front panel integrated with a massive 80mm fan for an elegant and nonintrusive design for the best ventilation, all in a single 3.5” hard drive that is installed into the front of the enclosure. There are two important reasons for the particular fan placement and design. First, the MB080U3S-1SB will be able to cool all sides of the hard drive and create only one direction of airflow from the front to the back, where the air then exits. This extends the life of the cooling fan as it only intakes cool cold air and increases the overall cooling efficiency of the hard drive, in comparison to other enclosure cooling designs. Second, the 80mm fan is integrated into the detachable front panel which allows to easily swap your hard drive without any screws or tools to worry about. On the sides, includes two slightly concealed button ejectors that when pressed, will eject the front panel enabling the user to swap the hard drive as needed, similar to popular hard drive docking stations.

Smarter Cooling Functionality

The rear panel comprises of a multitude of defining features coming all together from only the best ideas of our previous external enclosure models. The enclosure has a single LED brightness dial to effortlessly adjust the ambient LED brightness to your preferred liking. To increase the level of functionality, the Blizzard's LED color will turn red when the hard drive temperature is over 50°C. The built in fan controller allows you to select low, high, and auto to properly cool the hard drive to help if such a case appears. The auto mode properly adjusts accordingly to your hard drive's requirements by increasing or decreasing the fan speed as needed.

Lightning Quick Speed

Taking advantage of the new ultra fast USB 3.0 interface, users will be able to transfer at high speeds at a maximum of 5Gbps or perhaps use the similarly fast eSATA interface for system when there is a lack of USB 3.0. The USB 3.0 interface is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 so using the MB080U3S-1SB on your legacy PC or Mac is not a problem. With tool-less drive installation, you can easily swap the drives in between systems. The Blizzard is perfect for users in the fields requiring the best cooling and performance on the market.

5 out of 5 eggsLove the look!

Pros: I received this as my Christmas present! This enclosure provides all the requirements I need such as USB 3 and the big fan in the front to prevent my hard drives from frying like my older enclosure. I like the idea of adjusting the LED lights and fan speed. I might change the 80mm fan with no LED since lights doesn't really matter to me.

Cons: None yet, will update if there is.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: - Easy to use
- Tool-Less/Screw-Less Design

Cons: I love IcyDock enclosures, it's all that I used, but I'm afraid this maybe my last one.

I bought this one because it was the only tool-less/screw-less USB 3.0 enclosure they had.

- I really didn't need a fan for my HDDs (fans collect dust). So I thought I could just disable the fan with a button. The details said 3 fan settings so I thought "off" might have been one of them. I was wrong. Sure, you can completely remove the fan manually, but I don't like leaving my HDD with an open end like that.

- This uses Plastic housing instead of aluminium. My past enclosures from IcyDock were aluminium housing, which were great to keep a hard drive cool without a fan. But this enclosure uses plastic (which feels really cheap). So they use plastic instead of aluminum, which will produce more heat and add a fan to make up for it? It would have been much more effective with aluminum housing.

- One of the side plastic panels slides and pops out of place when I put a hard drive in (I have to slide it back), which isn't that big of a deal since there is nothing connected to that side, but that can be a problem down the line.

- It's still a bulky enclosure if you remove the fan. That's a design flaw if you ask me. What's the point of removing the fan if it won't save space? Is this the only way they knew how to disable the fan (by taking it completely off)? They couldn't just add a button for that ("Fan Off").

- There is no button to turn off the LED fan lights (might be annoying for people who don't like LED lights on their systems like me), and there is no button to turn off the fan (as mentioned before). You can lower the LED lights, but can't turn them off. I am not sure why? Is it really that hard to add "off" buttons?

- The On-Off (I/O) switch is located in a bad location (between the power port and the USB3.0 or eSata port). It's hard to work your fingers there if you keep the hard drive near the back of your desk.

- USB 3.0 speeds are 50 MB/s compared to USB 2.0's 30 MB/s. This can be due to my hard drive, system, or files I am copying, so I didn't knockoff an egg for this, but it's just a thought.

Bottom Line: I am not satisfied, and wish I just looked for an aluminum, tool-less/screw-less enclosure from another brand. I am not sure why IcyDock's new USB 3.0/eSata aluminum Enclosures require tools and screws now when the older USB 2.0/eSata models did not. If they had a USB 3.0/eSata aluminum enclosure that were tool-less, I would have just bought that instead of buying this atrocity.

Other Thoughts: I really hope the rebate kicks in...... You really shouldn't pay 60-70 dollars for this. I only purchased because there was a 30 dollar rebate.

5 out of 5 eggsIcy Dock Blizzard

Pros: For the past three years now this unit has at least for me perform flawlessly! Personally I wish I had discovered this item years ago before I spent the money I did on brand-name external hard drives! I definitely would've saved a mint I do multiple backups not only dealing with various documents on my PC, but along with that I have separate hard drives or I should say multiple hard drives for my photographs and my music. I'm rather redundant in that way particularly when I'm trying to say photographs digital photography has a tremendous amount of advantages over film but definitely one of the negative issues is permanent , indefinite, and archival storage. Once again for me this unit has been a tireless worker.

Cons: Minor issues, the wiring supplied the 3.0 USB wire, very robust yet very stiff! Also engaging the ventilation fan, here too snapping in the home position you might need some patience at times.

Other Thoughts: Most definitely would recommend a "buy", on this unit and stock up on internal hard drives when they're on sale for me this is been an excellent way for backup.

2 out of 5 eggsExcellent but dead in 6 months

Pros: - Speed. Using usb3.0 I was getting about the same transfer rate to this dock as when I was transferring between two internally connected sata drives.
- Design: Looks great, the dim blue LED lets you know it is on without lighting up the room at night, the included feet made for a very stable platform
- Quiet: Even with the fans set to high this thing barely made a hum and kept my drives nice and cool
-Versatility: Although I prefer to use the more common usb3.0, it was nice to also have eSATA as an option. A few of my older machines didn't had eSATA but no usb3.0 and I was happy to have the eSATA option instead of being forced to use the much slower usb2.0 speeds. Makes a huge difference when transferring hundreds of GBs of data.

Cons: -Reliability: This dock was everything I wanted until it simply died on me after about 6 months of ownership. I used the dock about once a week to backup a few machines and would store it off-site between weekly uses. 6 months of happy dock ownership and I plug it into a machine and no drive appears.
I check disk management and it tells me the dock is connected but there is no drive present. I try it on a different machine and get the same result. I swap out the drive in the dock with 3 different HDDs and all show no disk present in dock.
Although I did enjoy this dock while it was working I simply cannot recommend something if it isn't built to last. When thinking of backup I considered prebuilt dock+drive solutions but opted for the icy dock because, although it came at a cost premium, it offers the flexibility of swapping out to a larger drive when the time comes. Unfortunately, this point is moot if the dock won't even last for one generation of drive. Maybe I got a lemon and yours will be fine but I will think twice before purchasing another dock from this company.
-Drive fit: often times it would take a few attempts to get a drive to properly seat into the sata and power connectors at the foot of the drive. I often found I needed to poke a flashlight into the enclosure when inserting a drive to see that everything was lining up correctly. Usually a nudge in the right direction would allow the drive to seat.

Other Thoughts: great enclosure that died too soon. I am going to attempt to RMA the drive, since they do have a 12 month warranty, but reading over their warranty has me a bit worried. "Any returns found to be non-defective are subject to a Non-Trouble Found fee of $ 50.00". So this means if the drive decides to randomly start working again, as randomly as it stopped working, that I'm on the hook for $50? Seems a bit ridiculous but I guess I'll cross that bridge if I get there. Wish me luck.

1 out of 5 eggsFW800 dead

Pros: Good concept. Needed a FW800 dock since I still have it and use it with assorted Macbook Pros and don't have USB3 yet on anything. Have been puzzled by the OWC Voyager still getting bad ratings after all these years for breaking down. So when this went on sale I bit.

Without front on docking of drives is fairly smooth and secure. Design, with its shape and bulk, isn't a plus but not a deal breaker for a working FW800 dock.

Cons: FW800 was randomly flakey off the bat, leading me to doubt the new cheap Toshiba 3Ts I got on sale or at least their incompatibility. Frustrating. After two weeks of this FW800 now is dead, not seen. USB2 works but is not of any value to me. Back it goes

5 out of 5 eggsGreat External Enclosure

Pros: My old computer, several years old running Vista suddenly stopped with no power. It had two 500 Gig hard drives that I needed the data off of, this was a spare computer but still had needed data. My new computer is an Apple that is running Parallels software and Windows 7. The ICY DOCK Blizzard connected with no problems and changing the hard drives is very easy with no screws to remove. The hard drives are recognized on both the Apple and Windows operating systems. This is a great enclosure costing more than some but well worth the extra cost.

Cons: No cons at all, this is a great product.

Other Thoughts: Highly recommended

3 out of 5 eggsGood device, poor rebate policy

Pros: This really is a very good device. Its two huge pros are it keeps the hard drive cool over extended periods (such as cloning a disk) and, hard drives can be inserted and removed effortlessly in seconds. I would rate it 5 stars if the company did not have a poor rebate policy.

Cons: It is unconscionable for any company to tell it's own customers, who have bought an item with a promotion/rebate to: "allow 12 - 14 weeks from receipt of your rebate". That is 1/4 of a year !!!!

1 out of 5 eggsUPDATE: It's garbage.

Pros: Easy to install.

Cons: Works with some drives, doesn't work with others.

Other Thoughts: After RMAing for a replacement, apparently it didn't want to seat a WD 2TB drive correctly. Drive would initialize, partition, but it would not format. This was consistant using different eSATA ports and cables. Drive was tested to operate fine in a different enclosure. I put this down to the Icy Dock's vertical design and lack of a hard mount. Roll the dice if you must, but I would avoid it.

4 out of 5 eggsCould be good, but got a lemon.

Pros: Awesome tooless design, just pop the front off, put the drive in, pop the front back on and your good to go. Great speeds from USB 3.0 with USAP.

Cons: Not exactly a compact footprint, no option to lay it out horizontally. While made with sturdy plastic, there isn't any metal heatsink inside (at least as far as I can tell) so the fan is pretty much your only cooling option, and if I'm really nitpicking the power and disk activity LEDs are kind of tiny.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately I got a lemon. While everything works pretty flawlessly with USB 3.0 the eSATA connector definately doesn't work. Afraid I'll have to RMA and hope I have better luck with the next one.
