1 out of 5 eggsIcyDock "Toaster" HDD dock non-functional

Pros: Functional design is OK.

Cons: Arrived in a non-functional state. Spent hours in discussion with IcyDock. Tried 5 different HDD units in it (all were verified operational in other installations. Tried connecting to 6 different PCs (4 via USB, 2 via eSATA). Tried updating device drivers for relative components in several of the PCs. The unit just does not work. Would ID itself in USB connection, but no indication a drive was available. Would not be visible as any device present in eSATA connection.

Other Thoughts: Got fed up and gave up trying. I had another IcyDock unit (different type) with a fan failure at work. The tech guy said he would prep an RMA for it. It reminded me to ask about this unit. I sent him the info. Will have to wait and see what happens...
Already ordered a replacement in a different brand, so if this gets exchanged, will be a back-up.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent USB 3 Dock

Pros: I have been using this dock for more than a year, it works flawlessly. Transfer speeds are fast and I have never had an issue with drives disconnecting or getting randomly dismounted like with other docks.

Cons: Price maybe, there are certainly cheaper offerings that are very similar.

Other Thoughts: Get it.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy this!

Pros: None

Cons: I have owned two of these now. The first I purchased never worked right. The computers would simply not recognize the dock. I could hear a "whistle" from the actual docking device. I decided to give them another shot. This second one I purchased is now being returned for loosing USB connection over and over. Find another brand!

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Build Quality

Pros: It works well, as long as it has not yet failed. Reads and writes, at USB 3 speeds, to every SATA and PATA drive I have tried in it. It is precisely the fact that it works so well that leads to a negative review. I expected a product in this price range to be well built, and it does not seem to be in one respect. Most of the circuit board is clean, except for a problem with the USB port.

Cons: I've worked with computers professionally since 1981, so I've worked with a lot of circuit boards, good and bad. The dock began to fail to recognize drives. It had been sitting on a shelf with cables properly supported. It was rarely moved from my shop. Still, the internal USB connector had gotten loose and failed. I knew I most likely would not be able to reconnect it since all the solder points had failed. And then I notice there had been no attempt to reinforce the connector, no bridge or clamp soldered to the board to keep it in place. The entire connector was only connected by the slivers of solder on the micro connections. It had been designed, intentionally or unintentionally (cheap), to fail.

Other Thoughts: I'll see if the company responds to this and if they make good on a clearly poorly designed, or cheaply assembled, part, then I'll revise this review. After all, perhaps this one had not had a component installed (there are two pin holes where a clamp could be soldered over the connector). Maybe it wasn't designed to fail, it was just an honest mistake. We'll see if they respond. I intend to email them as well.

3 out of 5 eggsClunky and cheap doors

Pros: It fills a need that I had to allow me to access drives easily by just docking externally for ESATA.

Cons: On my first use the small 2.5" door fall off when removing a 3.5" drive for the first time. I returned for a replacement. The new one did the same thing after only a handful of uses. I will not return this and just leave the small 2.5" door broken. It is a bad design.

Also, as mentioned I use this specifically for ESATA. I have have found myself needing to reboot with the drive installed a few times to get this to work. Pretty annoying

Other Thoughts: I think this item is overpriced. I did get use a coupon code to get this for $13 off so it was a bit better. This is not worth the $55 normal price. When it does work it fills the need I have to access whatever drive I need quickly. I use backup software to backup to HDD's I have laying around and it is much quicker than any USB HDD I've used.

5 out of 5 eggsGood so far.

Pros: Just tested the USB3 interface with a SATA2 Corsair SSD loaded in the IcyDock. HD Tune and Sandra Lite benchmark scores were between 170 and 190 MB/s.

I copied an 80GB directory tree from a SATA3 SSD to the SATA2 Corsair SSD in the IcyDock via the USB3 interface. Write speeds consistently stayed between 160 and 170 MB/s for the entire 80GB copy.

So far, this is faster than my other hard drive docs.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: Haven't tested SATA3 SSD to SATA3 SSD speeds yet.

Bought 2 of these for faster field cloning purposes.

Long term performance and stability is TBD.
