3 out of 5 eggsOk , but NO RAID

Pros: Looks cool
Well built.
Holds 4 drives.
Almost silent fan.
Hot swappable.

Cons: No RAID support.
WAY to expensive for no RAID.
Don't trust important DATA to single drives.

Other Thoughts: A work around for the non-RAID , is to use backup software , and dedicate 2 drives for DATA , 2 for back up (I.E. 2x500GB DATA , 2x500GB Backups [for the data drives]).
If you trust your DATA to single drives , you're asking for trouble.
Make sure you have a way to back this thing up.

3 out of 5 eggsNot support Synology NAS

Pros: Working good on PC

Cons: Not working on Synology NAS, which is my original purpose. It can only identify one drive, and always mark other 3 disks are broken. But actually, all disks are totally new.

1 out of 5 eggsdisappointed

Pros: It looks really cool. Easy setup. The fan is quiet. LEDs can be turned off

Cons: Amazingly disappointed. The first night, the thing worked like a charm over USB 3 . The next day, it will not mount drives. Had to redo the partitions in the disk utility app (after a fair amount of troubleshooting and forum searches)... Needless to say, I've lost a fair amount of data. Looked like I was finally out of the woods and while performing a Time Machine backup the disk is no longer readable. Go to the next disk, I get 4 to 5 gigs into the backup and the same error saying the disk cannot be read. The two drives in question are brand new WD 4TB Blues. Disk utility scans show no errors with the drives. I'm not sure if its a OS X thing or not. Would caution you on this purchase.

Other Thoughts: It might be possible that I got a bad enclosure out of the bunch.

1 out of 5 eggs+ 2.2 TB disk problem

Pros: Nicely done, quiet.

Cons: I put 3 disks in it, 2x 2TB and 1x3TB, It seems not be able to read the 3TB disc, I am looking to fix that problem. It is suppose to be able to read disks over 2.2TB !!!!

Other Thoughts: Haven't done any speed test on it yet.

5 out of 5 eggsdecent value for the price

Pros: - The drives stay fairly cool
- It's quiet.
- Drives are pretty easy to install.
- Works great with my Mac Mini.
- The blue lights aren't too bright (imho)
- Dust filter in front does its job well.
- WD 1 TB Black series drives work great with this unit.

Cons: - Dust filter in the front got clogged fairly fast but I guess that says more about my home (and cleaning abilities) than the filter LOL
- 3 TB Seagate drive isn't stable (this could be a flakey drive though)

1 out of 5 eggsUseless

Pros: Nice lights. Sturdy metallic enclosure

Cons: No quality control, faulty board

Other Thoughts: It turned out to be the most useless enclosure I ever bought. After 5 months of working with occasional hiccups to the computer, now it refuses to connect. All my other enclosures work fine. I took the 4 drives out and put in drives from the other enclosures with same results. Idiot lights are blinking and there's no connection. Restarted computer several times and one bay connected only to disconnect after 5 min of work. Apparently the manufacturer has no quality control.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome !!

Pros: I have been using the MB174U3S-4SB for about four months now and the external enclosure does not disappoint. The initial motive for buying a four-bay cage is to easily access all my music and video files and have them "physically" ready to use at anytime. Since I constantly listen to music back and forth between my laptop and desktop paired up with different digital to audio converters, I prefer to have my audio source to be uncompressed and my files do fill up my drives quite fast. The upgrade route of adding 2TB drives every time I run out of space in a 4 bay enclosure seemed quite cost-effective to my needs.
The media files are accessed using foobar2000 or VLC in Windows 7 and I never run into delays playing concertos with each movement taking up 800 mb or more. Video files are transferred with an average speed of 170~180 MB/s which is more than enough consider that I use consumer level 3.5" hard drives. The Black Vortex's aesthetic appeal is also very

Cons: I Have Zero cons found

1 out of 5 eggsSSSSSLLLLLLLOOOOWWWW!!!!!

Pros: Big quite fan, looks nice, includes a filter, it does what it says it does.

Cons: This thing is so slow. I bought it to replace an older (and cheaper) HDD enclosure. My older one (using older controllers) is 2 to 3 times faster than this one is. I noticed file transfers taking longer than they should, so I used CrystalDiskMark to benchmark it. Sure enough, the HDDs in this enclosure are slower than when they are in my older enclosure, by a significant amount. The slow down is even worse when transferring data from one HDD to another within the enclosure. I had an HDD backing up another HDD within the enclosure. While that was going on, I tried to access a 3rd HDD within the enclosure and had a very hard time accessing it. My older enclosure could handle this without any issues.

Other Thoughts: IMO, there are better HDD enclosures out there for the same price or cheaper. I suggest looking elsewhere. While the speed issue may not be a deal breaker for others, it is for me. I'm switching back to my older enclosure.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat External Dock

Pros: Excellent external dock I use for local storage. Currently I have 3 x 6TB Western Digital RED drives and they work perfectly with all three drives separately mounted and SMART data for each drive.

Cons: Not really a con; more of a personal preference. I like my drives to be as cool as possible even with mild use, so I changed the fan to a bit stronger one as noise isn't an issue for me. My temperatures stay cool; anywhere from 32C at idle to 40C max during use. The stock fan is sufficient for general cooling and low noise.

Other Thoughts: If you have any need for such and Item I would definitely recommend it.
