3 out of 5 eggsGreat enclosure, mediocre docking bay

Pros: The concept is great - an external enclosure, with a docking bay for the front of the computer that lets you shove in the drive without fussing with cables. I paired this enclosure with an Intel SSD, and the drive fit perfectly inside. The simplicity and execution of the enclosure are superb.

Cons: Contrasted with the build quality of the enclosure, the dock was somewhat lacking. In particular, the plugs at the back of the bay did not align with the ports on the back of the enclosure. I initially tried to bend the back of the enclosure, and while handling the dock I broke the plastic at the front (and subsequently glued it back together). I ended up removing the plugs and shaving away about 1mm of plastic with a knife, which was sufficient to align the plugs with the ports.

Other Thoughts: The plastic at the front of the dock makes an unpleasant squeal as one inserts the enclosure. I painted the plastic black to match my case, which has mitigated the noise.

As others have said, it would be nice if SilverStone incorporated a dust cover to the dock in a subsequent revision of this product.

The back of the packaging promotes the enclosures' "bocking bay," which I found more amusing that an average person would.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

Pros: Sturdy Case. Comes with a docking bay. Setup was a breeze and I was reading/writing to the disk in no time.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Not really a con - the bay plate is only silver. A few minutes with some black spray paint took care of that. It does leave a hole in the front of the case, but my case has a door, so no biggie.

Used with a WD Black 320GB Low Power drive. No issues and stays relatively cool.

I'm using this as a drive for a VMWare image. Speed is excellent through E-Sata. The flexibility of using e-sata or USB is a big selling point for me.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: If you are not interested in this model's docking bay feature, then take a look at SilverStone's RAVEN RVS01

Put an image of a flip-top cigarette box in your mind. The SATA connector and electronics are located in the flip-top. A person gently squeezes the butter-fly mount to insert or remove the HD. There are small tabs on each side the butter-fly mount which fits firmly in the screw holes where the HD Caddy screws would normally belong. No screws. No tools. Close the flip-top, connect the USB and DC power cable and its ready to go.

Also, before use, the case opens up like a men's billfold wallet. No need to worry about heat that is trapped inside of a plastic or aluminum case of a traditional HD enclosure, because the HD is exposed to the open air. Both ends and the bottom of the HD are still securely protected by the case.

It is the same width, slightly thicker, and 1 1/2 inches longer than the HD. I don't see how any manufacturer could make one any smaller.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Compare and read specs in Product/Raven section at SilverStone's website.

5 out of 5 eggsExtremely Happy

Pros: After testing the MS05S with a WD-120 gig drive. I found that it work flawlessly. Installing the drive into the case was easy, just a few turns of a screwdriver. No brain surgery here. I have 7 units that are cycled through for nightly backups. They are hot swapped out ever day from the docking bay and taken off site. Extremely cost effective! Performance is limited pretty much by the drive you install in the case and your system limitation. I have not found had any issues with performance.
The ability to connect to any system via USB is a huge bonus in recovering in the event of a catastrophic failure of our servers. These puppies will get the company up and running in minutes as apposed to days!

Cons: Wish the drive bay had a door that would close when the drive is removed.

Other Thoughts: You need to have a drive controller that allows you to hot swap drives if you are using it that way. I got one from Newegg for a reasonable price.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great and can accept drives up to 1 Tb (I discovered that this was uncommon) -- makes an excellent combo with my new WD 500 Gb drive.

Cons: The 3.5" drive bay dock came with the front upside down in relation to the back (where the cables plug into the drive), preventing proper installation of the drive! I couldn't remove the flimsy front without breaking it so I ended up unscrewing the piece holding the cables and mounting it upside down (skipping the middles screw, which is off center).

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent mobile storage

Pros: I currently have 2 other enclosures for laptop drives, but this is by far the best one that I have seen so far. The build quality is excellent as the hard drive mount has 4 rubber pads to protect the laptop drive from any bumps and shocks. Data transfer is fast as usual and the convenient SATA connection makes transferring data from my main rig very fast. This enclosure paired with a Toshiba 320GB drive makes for an awesome mobile solution.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The silver style matches my current case exactly, so it looks like it meant to be a part of it.
