SFX Series 450W Power Supply

After successfully revolutionizing both HTPC and SFF market segments with innovative chassis designs, SilverStone engineers continue their push for advancement in these categories by releasing a true upgrade-worthy small form factor power supply, the ST45SF. This SFX unit is compatible not only with chassis that use SFX power supplies but also in a smaller ATX chassis with the included adapter bracket. Despite its small size, the ST45SF has features that one would expect from an elite ATX power supply such as 80 PLUS Bronze level of efficiency, temperature controlled fan, 50° temperature rating, and reliability for 24/7 operation. Enthusiasts oriented features are also present with single +12V rail and 8pin/6pin PCI-E connectors to fully support multi-GPU systems. 4 out of 5 eggsNoisy Fan & Solid Power Lose-Win

Pros: This PSU is small, this is my first experience with an SFX and I couldn't believe how small it was upon unboxing. This compact nature is awesome as it enables builds like the RVZ01. It is providing good power for my gaming rif. The packaging was good and unit was received intact. The contents of the box were adequate for my installation needs.

Cons: The Fan is Noisy. I have a V2 of this unit and it's not any better than all the reviews I see from previous people with the V1. It's not noisy because of working hard and pushing air, but rather from poor quality. It is rattling just slightly but with the RVZ01 the PSU intake is on the side making this noise very apparent outside of the case. I'd love to see a unit like this with a better fan. SILENT is valuable for a PSU and it's not like it has to do a whole lot if good components are used for circuitry.

Other Thoughts: Cables are a little stiff, Silverstone should just upgrade to the flat cable set for the price of this thing rather than subjecting all of us customers to purchasing extras just to get the best product. I found their length adequate for my case but was surprised how short the 24pin mobo lead is.

4 out of 5 eggsNot "perfect" but VERY good.

Pros: * Small, designed to fit in Silverstone's Raven Z/Milo ML07 ITX case.
* Provides adequate power for an ITX based HTPC/single-GPU light gaming build. (i5-2500K, GTX 750 Ti, ML-07 case.)

Cons: * Louder than I expected, but that is something I'm very sensitive to (see Other Thoughts.)

Other Thoughts: Other reviews will speak much more about this PSUs efficiency and capacity, I can really only speak subjectively about my experience using it. Noise was going to be the determining factor for me in my satisfaction with this unit (knowing that the parts it supplies power to are well, well below threshold.) Sadly, it's the loudest part of my system.

That said, to give you some perspective on my setup: in a room with ANY ambient sound (movie, TV, conversation) the PC is inaudible... until you crank up a GPU-intense game, then the 3 fans (CPU, GPU and PSU) spin up to an audible light whoosh of airflow. Quieter than my super-slim PlayStation 3 when it's on, but noticeable.

Otherwise, I can only hear it when the room is empty and completely quiet - if the refrigerator compressor is running in the next room, it's hard to discern the sound. Even then, the noise is not unpleasant enough to be distracting, it is just noticeable. If you're an SPCR junkie like me (you know who you are!) you might want to wait until the 500w, 120mm fan version of this PSU comes out. It's likely to be closer to what you want. For just about everyone else, enjoy the PSU. :-)

2 out of 5 eggsNot So Silent

Pros: Small, the power supply is surprisingly small and delivers on power, and is fully modular to boot. The cables included are shorter than normal as it is meant for SFF PCs.

Cons: Loud - the fan on this power supply is the loudest thing in my PC. It isn't crazy loud but it is far from silent. Given that this is for a SFF PC I expected quieter, I have had same size case fans that were quieter. That is why the 3 Egg knock.

Other Thoughts: Will be replacing the PSU with quitter one in near future.

2 out of 5 eggsvoid your warranty putting in a new fan :D

Pros: It's sfx and 450w

Cons: silverstone did nothing to fix the fan noise issue with the V2.0

Other Thoughts: google "replacing-psu-fan-in-silverstone-sfx-450w"

keep selling them silverstone, it's a good long term business model.

4 out of 5 eggsNear perfect for ITX systems

Pros: This is the ideal PSU for my Fractal Node 304.

The fan is inaudible. I'm not sure if the fan speed is variable on temperature or load, but I certainly never hear it.

The SHORT cables are great for ITX systems. I don't have to worry about excess clutter or length I'll have to bunch up somewhere with zipties. This is what you want for an ITX system to maximize airflow and reduce clutter.

The included SFX to ATX bracket is convenient and allows me more room to tuck and hide non-PSU cables and wires than if I had gone with a traditional and utterly pointless ATX power supply. Seriously--this things is dramatically smaller than ATX supplies, in nearly every dimension.

450W is more than enough for my system, and probably more than enough for most single GPU systems.

The matte black paint finish is handsome too.

Cons: As others have mentioned, these cables are exceptionally stiff and too snug to completely plug into the PSU itself. They're in enough to function, but there is a pronounced gap between the socket on the PSU and the cable. Taking off a star not for the stiffness, but for the dysfunctionally-tight connections.

Other Thoughts: Lots of people here are complaining about the cables being too short, which I believe is unfair to blame Silverstone for. This is an SFX PSU, designed for compact systems where short cables are ideal, if not wholly necessary. If you have an ITX system (or something like it) but need longer cables, well, I'd probably be quicker to blame the engineers who designed the case for their oversight.

I don't own Silverstone's set of flat cables PP05-E but I would recommend them for almost any application, considering how stiff and tight the standard cables and sockets are. I am unsure if the PP05-E are any shorter or longer than the standard included set. I'd hope they're not any longer.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: - fits
- no power issues
- modular

Cons: - only GOLD certified
- only 450W

Other Thoughts: SFX PSUs seem to top out at 450W...which is okay but I prefer breathing room especially considering I upgrade every 4-5 years instead of every 2. Capacitor aging is thus a bigger issue for me

5 out of 5 eggsTiny, seems sturdy

Pros: Feels study and has a good weight. Curious as to the quality of the capacitors inside from the other post. First modular power supply. Connectors are strong.

Cons: wish it came with more cables. Extra cables are expensive.

Other Thoughts: It's going inside a Silverstone DS380 case.

2 out of 5 eggsDied after 16 months

Pros: It worked well when it worked.

Cons: It completely died after 16 months of use so I purchased a different brand.

Other Thoughts: This was in a very low-powered HTPC with on-board graphics and died after 16 months of light use. I have a second HTPC built very similar and with an upgraded video card used for gaming as well. It gets heavy use and the Corsair PSU in that rig has been going strong for over 2 years now. Do yourself a favor and get a better quality PSU.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far too good!

Pros: Lots of drive...even, for power hungry AMD products.
The unit is quiet, I can't notice the sound everyone is complaining about, but then again my CPU fan is a little loud in itself ****

Cons: Non, so far

Other Thoughts: It is a bit early to review, as I haven't had a chance to oversee the longevity of things, but let it be known to all the naysers and those who throw "Watts" around loosely. I have a mini-itx build with an AMD A10 7850k OC'd from 3.7ghz @ 1.24 volts, to 4.4ghz from @ 1.375...and to top it off(...wait for it...) a big R9 MSI 280x 6GB, OC'd to 1160mhz and 1610mhz (stock voltage). I'm even thinking of running my old voltage boosted setting of 1200mhz and 1700mhz(memory) that I used on my 750 Watt PSU...but I want to give things a little more time. So far, I have ran the heck out of Unigine Haven and Unigine Valley GPU benchmarks and have played hours of Titanfall (VERY CPU intensive), and will be throwing in some Elder Scrolls Online once it finishes downloading. This PSU has not broke a sweat. Now, I wouldn't go so far as to run an OC'd FX series CPU at those killer 220+watts, but this PSU will handle ANY FM2+ build you throw at it, including big cards. Even Silverstone themselves doubted me and said "no it won't work, you need 650W(obviously, trying to pre-sale me on their up and coming 600w SFX solution). There are people running this PSU with Nvidia Titans and R9 290's, in fact. ITX's a different world. You don't have 15-20% of your power being eaten up by the hardware, as you do with ATX builds, making this the ITX solution for big hardware.

5 out of 5 eggsGood to go

Pros: Modular, i will never buy another PSU thats not modular. Quiet can take a load ( 7 4tb drives in RAID 5 video card BlueRay drive and a high end board and CPU.

Cons: Slightly bigger than other SFX PSU's.

Other Thoughts: Does what it said, expensive.
