5 out of 5 eggsGreat little PSU

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: - SFX form factor with ATX bracket
- Full modular
- Shorter cables to reduce unnecessary clutter in small builds
- Fan is silent
- Very efficient

This was likely one of the best purchases for my mini-ITX gaming PC. It helped enormously with space inside of my Rosewill Legacy V3 case and easily powers my system (see specifications below).

Cons: - Three warranty

In all fairness, a three year warranty is great, however, other brands such as Corsair and EVGA back their PSUs with a seven and ten warranty respectively.

Other Thoughts: My system:
Intel Core i5-4460
ZALMAN CNPS8900 CPU Cooler
ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac
Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB DDR3 1600 Kit (LP)
EVGA GTX 960 Superclocked 2GB (ITX Version)
Transcend 256GB M.2 SSD
Samsung 2TB 2.5" Hard Drive
SilverStone 450W SFX Modular PSU
Fractal Design Silent 40mm Fans (4x)

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I ordered

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Small. High quality braided cables. I must be lucky because the fan is silent contrary to many reviews. Runs very cool. True SFX form factor not the larger L.

Cons: Can't think of any, it is what it says it is.

Other Thoughts: Powering a GTX 970 and i7 5820k w/Corsair H55 AIO water cooler with no problems.

3 out of 5 eggsBeware of Fan

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Great little power supply, 450w in a package that small seems crazy to me. Comes with an ATX bracket which was a main selling point since I wanted to save as much space as possible in my HTPC. Silverstone ML03B by the way.

Cons: Biggest con was the fan. It was grindy on the very first power up and never got better, it would actually get worse and sometimes randomly go quiet. Though when it was quiet it was really quiet.
Second issue is the atx 24 pin cable is just barely, and I mean barely long enough to use in my case. Luckily my case has elongated holes for the power supply mount that I was able to shift the power supply just enough to buy me a tiny bit of slack.

Other Thoughts: I ended up pulling the fan out and buying an 80mm x 15mm two pin fan. Problem there was the two pin stock fan has a very small connector and the fan I bought had a much larger one. I ended up cutting the wires and soldered the small connector to the new fan. After installing the fan and verifying it was spinning I now have a super quiet power supply that has even more airflow. Be aware though this does void your warranty!

5 out of 5 eggsRuns cool, runs quiet

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: When I was deciding to build an HTPC, I determined that the ultimate goal should be a balance of a) Power and b) Efficiency. If you make a computer powerful enough, it will idle while generating the video. If you make it efficient, you won't need much fan power to keep it cool. For the power it outputs, this is rather expensive... but the efficiency is amazing.

Even during medium activity, it runs very cool. No noticeable warming of the air on the exhaust. The modular cables is awesome, especially when dealing with small cases.

Cons: The first one I got was DOA. Unlike most people on Newegg, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and simply got it replaced. It prevented me from finishing the machine for another week, but really, out of 20+ power supplies purchased, this is my first DOA. Who knows, maybe I just got one of very few duds? Had I gotten another DOA, I probably would have knocked an egg off.

The main 20/24 pin cable could be maybe an inch or two longer. In my case, the power supply feeds right up to the motherboard, but if it were anywhere less opportune, it probably wouldn't reach.

Other Thoughts: Great choice for a quiet computer. Definitely recommend this to others.

5 out of 5 eggsNAS Problem!!

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: I have'nt actually used the device, had to return it immediately; although i have heard its a wonderful little PSU!

Cons: unfortunately if your planning on building a NAS or having a large amount of things plugged into the 5v rail (HDDs) it maxes out at 14 amps, meaning if you are like me wanting to build a 8 drive RAID array using WD Reds (1.75 amps each) your looking at pulling 14 amps at all time. [1.75 * 8 = 14] maxing out a psu continuously is only asking for an early death in your system. So i upgraded to another PSU (see other thoughts if interested)
TLDR: low amp output for RAID drives needed stronger PSU

Other Thoughts: better alternative: SILVERSTONE SX500-LG (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256116)

4 out of 5 eggsSweet PSU

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Wonderful in small cases like LIAN li PC-Q33 or Q30. Just the ticket for good cable management, and the fan runs always but makes no noise, period. Good for powerful CPUs, memory overclocked.

Cons: The just right length main 24Pin cable pins very tight into both the modular supply socket and motherboard socket.... bad, bad!

1 out of 5 eggsfew weeks old and failed

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: I dont really know any pros since it's just a power supply and it failed at that.

Cons: So today I came home and I had almost no power in my house. I sat in the dark for hours and was reading threads online in my phone about how to diag electrical issues in the house. I began unplugging everything and narrowed it down to my HTPC PSU. So removed it from my case and plugged it into multiple outlets in my house and it flipped the breakers immediately. What a way to ruin my Saturday night! I always try to buy the best power supply brands and I thought this was it for the form factor, but I guess not!

Other Thoughts: When building a HTPC I did a lot of research and found out that silverstone products had high praise and so I purchased their case. I did't realize that the case had a special form SFX power supply and I was a little worried about power supplies because I only purchase antec because I went cheap on a power supply once and it fried EVERYTHING in my PC. Now I am worried this has happened again and I can't test it because my PSU is dead. I suggest when looking to buy a HTPC you make sure it fits normal ATX power supplies so you can purchase quality components. Out of my complete build this was the only part I was worried about and it failed.

5 out of 5 eggsSmall and quite

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Working fine in my Tiki for a few years. I also went from an Nvidia 670 GTX to a 980 Ti (making full use of the 6+8 pin from the PSU) lately. This leaves modest but decent 50-70w headroom (mostly since the CPU is only 77 TDP) for sanity. I don't hear the fan though I can feel it. The CPU and GPU fans make much more noise than this PSU.

Single rail avoids some power limitation pitfalls with wattage hogs like GPUs.

Cons: Almost, but not enough wattage for top gpu/cpu pairing.

Other Thoughts: If you want a super top GPU *and* CPU (6 or 8 core, especially an AMDs with higher TDPs) this will not cut it. The SX500-LG should gives just enough wattage to do this (e.g. a 140w intel 8 core) and is the same size. It's also pretty cheap now, so that's something to consider.

I'm happy with my Core i5 3570K though.

3 out of 5 eggsPerfect Power Supply with Major Issue

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Surprisingly small, powerful, and sturdy. Well packaged and includes a wealth of modular cables.

Cons: Has a terrible 80mm fan, especially for this price point. I have the V2 model and the fan has a constant grinding noise that completely dominates the sound profile of the system. This one fan is louder than my desktop PC when gaming, and that has 4 fans in it. Extremely disappointing given the quality of the rest of the product and the price.

Additionally, the included modular cables are not very flexible, so spending the additional $30 for the flexible cable kit is almost a must.

Other Thoughts: If you don't mind a very loud PC, especially a very loud small PC, this power supply will be great. For anyone looking for something relatively quiet, I can't in good conscience recommend this product.
