1 out of 5 eggsfew weeks old and failed

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: I dont really know any pros since it's just a power supply and it failed at that.

Cons: So today I came home and I had almost no power in my house. I sat in the dark for hours and was reading threads online in my phone about how to diag electrical issues in the house. I began unplugging everything and narrowed it down to my HTPC PSU. So removed it from my case and plugged it into multiple outlets in my house and it flipped the breakers immediately. What a way to ruin my Saturday night! I always try to buy the best power supply brands and I thought this was it for the form factor, but I guess not!

Other Thoughts: When building a HTPC I did a lot of research and found out that silverstone products had high praise and so I purchased their case. I did't realize that the case had a special form SFX power supply and I was a little worried about power supplies because I only purchase antec because I went cheap on a power supply once and it fried EVERYTHING in my PC. Now I am worried this has happened again and I can't test it because my PSU is dead. I suggest when looking to buy a HTPC you make sure it fits normal ATX power supplies so you can purchase quality components. Out of my complete build this was the only part I was worried about and it failed.

5 out of 5 eggsSmall and quite

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Working fine in my Tiki for a few years. I also went from an Nvidia 670 GTX to a 980 Ti (making full use of the 6+8 pin from the PSU) lately. This leaves modest but decent 50-70w headroom (mostly since the CPU is only 77 TDP) for sanity. I don't hear the fan though I can feel it. The CPU and GPU fans make much more noise than this PSU.

Single rail avoids some power limitation pitfalls with wattage hogs like GPUs.

Cons: Almost, but not enough wattage for top gpu/cpu pairing.

Other Thoughts: If you want a super top GPU *and* CPU (6 or 8 core, especially an AMDs with higher TDPs) this will not cut it. The SX500-LG should gives just enough wattage to do this (e.g. a 140w intel 8 core) and is the same size. It's also pretty cheap now, so that's something to consider.

I'm happy with my Core i5 3570K though.

3 out of 5 eggsPerfect Power Supply with Major Issue

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Surprisingly small, powerful, and sturdy. Well packaged and includes a wealth of modular cables.

Cons: Has a terrible 80mm fan, especially for this price point. I have the V2 model and the fan has a constant grinding noise that completely dominates the sound profile of the system. This one fan is louder than my desktop PC when gaming, and that has 4 fans in it. Extremely disappointing given the quality of the rest of the product and the price.

Additionally, the included modular cables are not very flexible, so spending the additional $30 for the flexible cable kit is almost a must.

Other Thoughts: If you don't mind a very loud PC, especially a very loud small PC, this power supply will be great. For anyone looking for something relatively quiet, I can't in good conscience recommend this product.

2 out of 5 eggsOne Major Flaw

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Every aspect other than the included cables works as expected.

Cons: I purchased this for use with the Silverstone SST-SG05 mini-ITX case, however discovered that attempting to use the internal 3.5" drive bay on that case in combination with the power cables supplied with this PSU causes the cables to bend too far (on the PSU side) and disconnects some of them (inside the cable housing) resulting in no power going to said 3.5" drive.

Running the same 3.5" drive on the same cable outside the case (so the power cables do not need to bend as far when they exit the PSU) "resolved" the issue, but did not get me any closer to a completed build.

After many frustrating hours I discovered that Silverstone also sells the solution to this problem that they created: For "just" $30 more I purchased the Silverstone PP05-E "flat flexible short cable set" which allows me to use my Silverstone mini-ITX PSU with my Silverstone mini-ITX case.

Silverstone has NO excuse for not including these cables with this PSU in the first place. Nobody has ever needed inflexible, long cables for a PSU like this.

Other Thoughts: Lesson learned: mini-ITX only seems cheap on casual examination. You ultimately will get nickle-and-dimed on weird cabling issues like this.

4 out of 5 eggsReview update

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: SFX, modular, gold rated.

Cons: Loud at stock. See below.

Other Thoughts: I have the first gen model and I replaced the fan in this unit with a 80mm Noctua (full 25mm thick) mounted to the same fan hole but on the outside. It is wired up to the internal fan header and this thing has since been rock solid. It runs cooler while being pretty much inaudible. I'm actually surprised it worked so well. If your case has room for it, can deal with a bit of ugliness and are willing to void the warranty, this works very well.

Running for over a year without noticeable issues.

4 out of 5 eggsSmall and powerful

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Steadily delivers power and has a very compact size that fits very well in my mini ITX build. The power supply is actually very quiet.

Cons: It says it is SLI ready, but it only has one dedicated PCI-E connector slot (the blue connector). The power supply is meant to be used in their very small cases, but it comes with very ridged cables that make cable management very difficult. They offer slim power cables as a separate purchase, but the cables should really be included.

5 out of 5 eggsnice compact power supply

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Small, quiet, modular. I used this power supply in a Cooler Master Elite 110 case.

Cons: The cables were a bit bulky for a small case, but still manageable. Too bad the smaller cables aren't included with this power supply.

Other Thoughts: Some people choose to buy the smaller cables. I didn't do that. I had to mash down the main motherboard connector to get it to fit under my Corsair H80i liquid cooler.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed with this v2.0 model

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Small form factor, completely modular, flat cables. I've purchased several of the 450W model and several of the 600W model for beefier builds, so of course I like them overall... until now.

Cons: Loud. The earlier models that I own are whisper quiet, but my v2.0 unit has a loud whine, so much so that I can hum the precise pitch. <sigh>

Other Thoughts: Great PSU other than the fan noise. Silverstone really needs to put a better fan in these things. Most people who want to build an HTPC or a small ITX machine for their desktop are not going to want to endure hours of listening to a loud fan that whines.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you very much for purchasing a SilverStone. There is a chance that your ST45SF-G may be defective if it has loud whine constantly during low load or high load conditions, if possible, please check with Newegg or our US office to see if you can return it and exchange for another one.

2 out of 5 eggsPower Cable WAY to short!

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Have not been able to power it on. Unknown at this time.

Cons: I got this power supply to go with my SILVERSTONE Black MILO ML03vHTPC Case. The case claimed to be ATX yet could not fit both a normal size power supply and a dvd or blue ray drive. So after putting aside my Seasonic PSU, I purchased this one as it claimed to be ATX compatible and was small enough to fit in the case and have room for the dvd drive. I figured since it had one of the highest ratings of this size and was by the same manufacturer as the case, it should be a good fit. I was wrong!

The ATX 24 pin connector was the shortest cable included with the PSU. Typically this is the longest cable included. Minus the connectors, it was only around 9 inches long. I have a mini itx motherboard and it could not even fit being mounted on the opposite side! Only way this power supply will fit is if it is mounted on the same side as the connector or directly above the board.

Since I am stuck with needing a smaller psu to go with this motherboard to fit in the case, I am going to have to purchase an additional 24 pin ATX extension cable. I may update this review once I have gotten the extension cable in and have had a chance to actually test the PSU out.

Other Thoughts: PSU has a short ATX 24 pin connector. Make sure you measure the distance between where the PSU will be mounted and the connector on the motherboard. May need to choose a different PSU or purchase this extender: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200121

5 out of 5 eggsBelle surprise / Nice surprise

This review is from: SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Delivers power as advertised. I checked with a multimeter before hand and all voltages are slightly above specifications. Very good! .......... Délivre une puissance telle qu'annoncée. J'ai utilisé un multimètre avant l'installation, et toutes les tensions/voltages des lignes sont légèrement au-dessus des spécifications. Très bien, très bon!

The fan is in pull mode, unlike usual PSU fans which are in push mode. Which is perfect for my case (Lian Li PC-Q30) since doesn't have any vent holes for a PSU fan (the PSU is mounted with the fan facing the mobo) .........

No power button, which is ok for an HTPC. I was baffled at first when nothing happened after pluging the PSU on the electrical outlet (since during the multimeter test while shorting the green pin, plugging to the outlet would power it up automatically), but then I plugged the case's power button, used it and voilà, it works.

La surprise : silencieux ! J'ai pris le risque de l'acheter malgré les évaluations disant qu'il est très bruyant, mais ce n'est pas le cas, c'est relativement silencieux, aucun problème de ce côté .............. The surprise: quiet! I took the risk in buying this although many evaluations state that it's noisy, but actually it's relatively quiet. Before receiving / installing this PSU, I began looking up the Web for a fan replacement solution, and this surprise has put an end to such loss of time.

Cons: None / Aucun
