SIIG's SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to SATA 3Gb/s Dual Docking is an excellent product designed to add high capacity mobile storage devices to your USB 3.0-equipped desktop or notebook computer. It allows you to quickly connect and access your SATA hard disk drives without having to open your computer case or storage enclosure. This SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to SATA 3Gb/s Docking features two hard disk drive docking bays to support 2.5" or 3.5" SATA hard disk drives with capacity up to 3TB, an ideal design for disk to disk backup. It comes with a built-in cooling fan for lowering operating temperature to extend hard disk drive life and delivers SuperSpeed USB 3.0 data transfer rates of up to 5Gb/s, 10x faster than USB 2.0. It is the high performance storage solution for super-fast accessing, transferring and backing up large data files between your external storage device and your USB 3.0 equipped desktop or notebook computer.

Note: Windows 2000, XP (32-bit), Server 2003 (32-bit) can't support more than 2TB capacity. This is an OS limitation.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate from SIIG

Pros: SIIG has offered to RMA the drive to replace the firmware

Cons: Device is unreliable with current firmware

Other Thoughts: Update: I wrote to SIIG and they offered to RMA my unit to replace the firmware with a newer version. I don't know that this will solve the problem but it's worth a shot. Stay tuned...

1 out of 5 eggsNot recommended

Pros: Easy to install, when it works it's fast

Cons: Unreliable when used on USB3.0 with two disks installed. More reliable on USB2.0 with two disks or on USB3.0 or USB2.0 with one disk.

When configured with 2 drives, the disks drop offline and the device must be powered down to get them back to normal operation.

Other Thoughts: I have a single dock station by the same company and a 4 port dock from StarTech, both work fine on USB3.0. They probably have a problem with the dual port operation.

3 out of 5 eggsDissappointing

Pros: Sometimes works in usb 3 mode, Dependable when used with usb 2.0

Cons: Can only copy a certain amount of data, then drives dissappear. Obviously some defect in design. Works fine in usb 2 mode and other docks work fine with my usb 3 card, so the problem is with the dock.

3 out of 5 eggsMislabled Package Contents

Pros: USB 3?

Cons: Mislabled description

Other Thoughts: Only one of the docks in this "Dual Dock" has the SATA connectors; the other is a dummy.
It is NOT eSATA as the Package Contents indicate.
It does not include an eSATA cable.

4 out of 5 eggsWORKS IN PART.....

Pros: 1. Handles two (2) drives at once.

2. Cooling fan is a real plus over other docks.

3. Individual HDD activity LED's.

4. Faster than USB 2.0 -- USB 3.0 runs at 1.6 to 3.5 times the USB 2.0 speed.

5. Clones of each HDD apear to be accurate, though I have not swapped out the C-drive with its clone to give it an "operational" test.

Cons: 1. Two "power on" LED's are lit whether or not there are HDD's in each bay.

2. USB 3.0 speed does not reach its full potential. Possibly due to immature firmware in the unit.

3. It does not play nice with WINDOWS 7 Pro 64-bit HDD ERROR-CHECKING. It continually fails to give the REPORT after a scan & fix are completed. Apparently a scan & fix are not completed on drives in this dock.

4. My Thermaltake BlacX Duet dock with eSATA is much faster than the SIIG SC-SA0J12-S1 dock, but the BlacX doesn't have a cooling fan. And eSATA only recognizes one HDD at a time (in the absence of a port multiplier).

Other Thoughts: I'm using this dock on a dual HDD Lenovo W510 with every firmware and software update installed. I use CASPER 6.0 for cloning hard drives in my desktop units and laptops.

This dock has potential to be really nice. But it needs upgraded firmware that will work with WINDOWS 7 Pro 64-bit ERROR-CHECKING and provide full USB 3.0 speed.

5 out of 5 eggsNice!

Pros: Simple design. Built in fan to help keep the drives cooler. Easy push button power switch on the front of the case. Four blue led's around the switch let you know when the drives are powered up and working.

Cons: None really. Cost could be better. I guess the one minor complaint I have so far is that it has the type of power cord where the transformer is in the middle of the cord. Nice for crowded power strips but the section of powercord from the transformer to the unit is only about 15 inches, making you have to set the transformer next to the unit. The cord length from the transformer to the outlet is fine.

Other Thoughts: Getting a transfer rate of about 60-65MB/second to a Samsung 1TB 7200rpm Sata 3Gb drive on a Windows 7 (64bit) machine. Wish there were drives capable of using all of the USB3 potiential. Still way better than USB2.
