5 out of 5 eggseasy and elegant

Pros: quick and easy to swap out drives. detects under Vista and W7 with USB without a single driver. built in fan keeps drives cool, nice airflow in enclosure.

Cons: a tad spendy. Don't have eSATA working yet...

Other Thoughts: i had recently purchased an IDE model of the DS3, and this SATA model is a perfect match. They're stacked up neatly with 1.4 TB of storage between them.

3 out of 5 eggsDied in just over 2 years

Pros: Easy to swap drives. Work with nearly everything, Linux, Windows and Mac. Quiet when fan is perfectly flat; see below.

Cons: Plastic tray flex's to easily, which warps the fan and makes it go out faster. Has bad cap's, I've had 3 of these, 2 IDE and this SATA one, all 3 have had caps go bad in them.

Other Thoughts: Overall, not bad. If the caps didn't go bad, i would suggest and probably buy again, but in good consciousness I can't suggest them.

2 out of 5 eggsDied in 2 years

Pros: Very quick & easy set up. Quiet internal fan

Cons: Died in just over 2 years. Worrisome internal construction

Other Thoughts: This is the quickest to assemble drive enclosure I've seen, though they're all pretty easy. However, the tray that carries the drive seems pretty cheesy, and has a worrisome rattly after it's all put together. It worked fine for 2 years then died. Testing with a know-good drive showed that it poered the drive up, but couldn't read a thing, supporting another reveier's contention that these guys use a perticularly cheap and unreliable chipset. I replaced it with the Antec MX-1: roughly the same price here at NewEgg and the same internal fan design, but a much more solid feeling drive carrier, with shock padding for the drive and more secure hold-downs for both the drive itself and the carrier. Time will tell on the electronic reliability, but right now, it seems the better choice.

2 out of 5 eggsslooow writes

Pros: easy to setup; ext power; fan keeps drive cool; decent read speeds (30MB/s with 500GB SATA 3Gbps)

Cons: painfully slooow writes (1MB/s with 500GB SATA 3Gbps) through USB (don't know about eSATA); tried 4 different PCs

Other Thoughts: i purchased this to share music/video with friends; the large file writes take way too long; pretty sure i'm going to exchange it

5 out of 5 eggs4th one and Super Fast!!

Pros: This AMS company is awesome and always puts out a great product. I had purchased 3 of the PATA connector ones in the past, but this is my first SATA connector sytle...again just a Great design and NO concerns from me about the performance of the product.

Cons: None really, they have been the same price for the last 4 yrs, so you know they have been around for a while here on Newegg.

3 out of 5 eggsWrong Specs!

Pros: This is my second AMS 3.5inch enclosure (third overall) and they've always run cool and have been reliable - metal frame, good fan. However, the new esata models do NOT come with the Oxford chipset, but with JMicron ones. Newegg's page for this enclosure was grandfathered in from the previous USB2.0 only enclosure, so half the reviews (earlier than late 2008) are for an entirely different enclosure!

I've been very happy with previous enclosures, but the shoddy esata performance (system crashes from poor drivers) are why this review's 3 stars.

Cons: 1) Jmicron chipset. As far as I can find only JMicron makes esata chipsets. Unfortunately, JMicron is a horrible company making unreliable chips and even worse drivers (based on my experiences with previous JMicron enclosures and motherboard components - the cheapest of the cheap chinese components!). Esata as a whole is not perfected yet and I've had troubles with this enclosure when using esata cables (Intel ICH9 chipset on the PC side). Even Intel's drivers are still buggy for esata - previous drivers (before latest/march 2009) would redetect esata drives, not let go of them, have variable speeds, etc. The latest ones freeze my system after heavy use of my esata external - on multiple PCs with different hardware. In short: eSATA is not ready for primetime and will likely go the way of firewire at this rate.

2) The Fans on these enclosures need oiling, and if they make a noise, oil them (wd-40)! They will die if you don't take care of them, which is constant with AMS enclosures

4 out of 5 eggsSolid if a bit large

Pros: Runs cool. Very stable. Great drive support.

Cons: Something inside dealing with the slide-in mechanism makes a sound as if it's not secure, but it may be okay.

Other Thoughts: Supports a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat enclosure

Pros: I've had one of these running constantly for over two years. No problems.
I'm buying another.

Cons: Fan looks non-standard, so if it went bad you'd have to replace the whole product.

5 out of 5 eggsMine works great!!

Pros: Simple to install, works great with eSATA mobo, quiet.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Have owned the Venus since September of 2007 and have nothing but good things to say about it. First time I installed an HDD into it I thought it was broke, but it turned out that the drive was broken. Have been running a WD2500KS in it for more than a year flawlessly. I can swap drives out with no sweat, and the speed on WinXP is great, no difference between it and my internal 7200RPM SATA drives. Going to buy another one soon. RECOMMENDED!!
