1 out of 5 eggsDead after 15 months

Pros: Durable Case with USB 3.0 interface. Worked well when it was alive.

Cons: Lasted less then expected, no power to the internal drive. Died just after the 1 year warranty period expired.

Other Thoughts: AMS is off my my buy list permanently.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Value - Satisfied

Pros: Price was great.
Build quality is very good.
USB 3.0 will be nice when I can take advantage of it.
Attractive case.
Easy to assemble with my 2.5" drive from an old Macbook, up and running fast.

Cons: These are minor, but together they're worth 1 egg to me:
- USB data cable is kinda stiff, but mainly I'm a little concerned about how tightly it fits into the connector on the drive. Maybe will wear or get nicked by a careless connection on my part?
- The blue light flashes the whole time the drive is engaged, not just when I'm intentionally reading or writing from/to it. Not sure what that means, but perhaps the drive is constantly checking in with my laptop?

Other Thoughts: The enclosure gets only mildly warm with my old laptop drive in it, making it a viable external drive option after I'm done copying the contents into the new laptop (old logic board died, stranding my data and applications).

Happy ending, partly because of this little enclosure.

Pros: Small enclosure

Cons: Survived a few months of very light use then died. No light, drive doesn't spin, no nothing.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this external hard drive case

Pros: This case is aluminum all the way around, great for keeping the unit cool and for durability. It has a solid, high quality build to it. That's my opinion as a mechanical engineer, but I did spend years manufacturing cheap automotive sensors. The USB 2.0 seems fast, but I have nothing to compare it to. I don't need the additional power cord that came with it to use this with my computer. I successfully used this to transfer over my factory windows install on my Lenovo y580 when I installed a SSD drive. Now I have a bonus hard drive and I got to keep the handy one touch recovery factory software that comes with the y580.

Cons: The hard drive is not locked down inside the case. When I shake the unit the hard drive doesn't move around, but it's not as secured as I would like. I would be comfortable putting this in my backpack and biking somewhere. I would not be comfortable tossing it across the room to a friend unless he was on the baseball team. I gave this 5 eggs because I try to avoid the latter usage and it is perfect for all my non aerial-transfer needs.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive without extra junk

Pros: Device registers as a USB Mass Storage Device and a HID
No drivers required for Windows/Linux/Mac unless you want to use the backup button

Cons: Not the smallest 2.5" enclosure
Cheap screws

Other Thoughts: Having the extra 5V power input is great for laptops and USB 2.0 systems that don't have enough current to spin up a drive. I've had several external drives that were flaky because the couldn't get enough power. It's also nice that the device works without drivers on all modern OSs.

3 out of 5 eggsNice metal work, poor electrical design

Pros: Seems to works OK with SSD drives. Nice metal work with good ventilation.

Cons: Did not work reliability with a standard hard drive. There seems to be an issue with the enclosure design not having any insulation between the mounting braces and the hard drive. This is not a problem with a Samsung SSD I tried, since it's fully enclosed. However, a standard hard drive mounted in this enclosure worked intermittently. The drives circuit board rests directly on the enclosures metal support rails. Several times, when I plugged in the drive it did not spin-up and was unrecognized by Windows. Apparently, this behavior was the result of a short between the enclosure and the drives circuit board.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from this enclosure, unless you're using a fully insulated hard drive or SSD !

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Enclosure:

Pros: Blazing fast transfer speeds utilizing USB 3.0, outstanding build construction (inside and out, including accessories), and works fine w/o additional power cord (which is supplied) even for USB 2.0 and low-power USB 3.0 (as found on most laptops).

Cons: The case is a little on the thick side (a few mm thicker than competitors), but that partially accounts for the excellent build quality. The USB cable is also a little on the bulky side but, again, that is not necessarily a bad thing either as it is likely a tougher cable as a result. The blue LED is extremely bright (would make for a decent flashlight), but this too is nit-picking. None of the above is worth taking off an egg.

Other Thoughts: Prior to this one I purchased a Bytecc enclosure, which was poorly designed, constructed, and was inoperable using USB 3.0 (thus making it a costly USB 2.0 enclosure). Up until now I have been fairly loyal to EagleBit for all my external enclosure needs, but it seems that their QC/QA has fallen off a bit and they are steadily declining and not keeping up with recent technological advances (they do not offer a USB 3.0 interface in a 2.5in. enclosure). This isn't necessarily disappointing as this AMS enclosure exhibits excellent quality and design (thus far), despite a slightly inflated price point. As long as this one withstands the test of time I think I will be turning to AMS for my future enclosure needs.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Solid Enclosure

Pros: A-A USB3 cable
extra 5V power cable
software for backup button (didn't install it though).
Nice solid aluminum
USB3 cable long enough (about 3 feet)
Solid connectors on back.

Cons: Really bright blue LED, but faces backwards.

Other Thoughts: I was looking for an enclosure, wanted something good. Already owned 2 other Venus ones and had good luck. Got this one, comes with everything you need. Opened it up and there are no screws to mount the drive to the connector, but it stays in place well. This is a Asmedia 2105 controller in the enclosure, and works at fast speeds with Renasas USB3.0 controllers.
