4 out of 5 eggsLoose handles, otherwise great

Pros: Price, nice and quiet, USB 3 performance, RAID capable.

Cons: Button release on hot-swap drive sleeves don't hold handles shut very well

Other Thoughts: All in all I really like this unit so far. My only complaint is the hot-swappable drive holders don't seem to lock very well when closed. The handle folds up and should be held in place (locked) by a small button...but the button doesn't seem to come down far enough to properly grab the handle. The only way I can get it to stay locked is to forcefully press that button down towards the handle. I'm not too optimistic that these would stand up to repeated hot-swapping. Not a big deal for me because I don't expect to be swapping a huge number of drives out all the time. Also not what I'd consider to be "broken", so not a warranty issue per se. But I expected it to lock in place a bit better right out of the box. If those worked better this would be a 5-egg review.

5 out of 5 eggsAMS VENUS DS3RPRO2

Pros: I didn't see an option to update my previous review so I'm adding another. Just purchased another box to replace my second failed icydock raid1 enclosure in two years. I removed the two drives from the icydock and placed them in this enclosure. Connected it to my Tivo and it booted up perfectly. I'm thrilled with this enclosure. So glad I did not lose all the data on the Tivo. Don't know why my two icydocks failed but I'll never buy another icydock.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsAMS VENUS DS3RPRO2

Pros: Great raid1 box for the price. I have 7 of these boxes connected via esata. Bought my first over a year ago and have never had a problem with any of them. Using WD Red 3TB drives. But recently purchased 2 HTHC 4TB NAS drives on sale and they are working great as well. I even bought 2 SSD drives and installed them in one box using adapters and they are working great as well.

Cons: It would have been convenient if they had designed it with screwless drive installation but its not a deal breaker. The drive latches are a bit touchy as others have noted but all 14 latches have stayed closed. A minor design flaw but it's still a good box.

Other Thoughts: Got tired of my raid5 arrays failing and losing data using onboard raid on the motherbord. So I have switched to external raid1 esata boxes. It's been reliable for the last couple years. With hard drive prices dropping, raid1 is the better option.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Works as advertised.
Very easy setup.

Cons: Agree with others about the bay latches being very sensitive.

Other Thoughts: I got around the sensitive bay latches by buying one of those long white eraser refills. I cut it to fit between the latch and the top of the tray. If you cut it just a little long, it's rubbery enough stay in place, hold the latch tightly closed, and allow for you to get into the bay.

2 out of 5 eggsPretty Awful

Pros: It can work, and when it does it is fairly fast

Cons: Must have a loose connection or something, because one drive almost always ends up being dropped by the Venus resulting in a sudden end to data transfer, whether it's trying to grab a homework before class, streaming a movie, or playing a game. Always freezes up in the worst time.

A horrible hassle to get Windows to recognize it, often forcing me to restart. If I don't get a prompt telling me Windows needs to run check disk on it, I know something is wrong, which is in itself wrong. I haven't been able to have it actually work just by plugging it in to a PC that's already on.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to accommodate my latest mITX build, which only has space for one full SSD and one mSATA SSD. I now am looking to buy a different case so I don't need to rely on poor hardware.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat product but!!!

Pros: The hard drive enclosure works with 3 and 4TB drives works wiht USB 3 and 2 just fine. By the way i'm using it on a older I7 system that dose not support 3 and 4TB drives and it work with USB 2.

Cons: Only problem with this drive enclosure is the latches on the drive sleds they have a very cheap feel and dont lock right.

Other Thoughts: If your not going to be hot-swappable drives or moving this unit it will be fine, if they fix the latches this will be a great product hands down and I'd give it 5 eggs.

4 out of 5 eggsAMS DS-DS3RPRO2

Pros: Looks nice. :)
it just arrived yesterday, and I haven't actually used it yet, so its hard to say. I will post more later if anything notable comes up.

Cons: As other reviewers have noted, the latches don't hold well. more below.

it would be nice if the fan switch (on the rear) had a low/high option, since other reviewers have noted it is kinda noisy.

Other Thoughts: The latches are odd: when there is no drive in the sled, they slide in and latch fine. when there IS a drive in the sled, they still latch fine AS LONG AS IT ISN'T SHOVED ALL THE WAY INTO ITS SLOT. This makes me think that the drive (at least the ones I got) are just a tad longer than the housing designers expected, preventing the sled from going in the last little fraction of a millimeter.

however, I expect to be able to deal with it.

though I didn't buy from NewEgg, I'm posting the comment here, as the place I did buy it doesn't have any comments at all, and I wanted to add my thoughts on the latch issue here.

5 out of 5 eggsNice replacement for the Venus 2

Pros: I bought this as a replacement to AMS's Venus es2 box. I was a little hesitant with the other reviews stating quality issues, but I've found nothing as extreme as what's being described there. Even the drive ejector button wasn't near as easy to force an accidental pull out of the drives like what other people are stating. The construction is overall solid. Accepted my 1tb WD green drives without an issue. I am using this in a mirror RAID setup for file backups.

Cons: Fan is loud.
Lack of RAID management software included.

Other Thoughts: You can find RAID management software designed for the Jmicron chipset they use. It may not be recommended, but it allows me to check on the status of the drives when needed.

3 out of 5 eggsOk quality - Noisy fan

Pros: The unit does what it advertises.

Cons: Build quality isn't the best and the fan is noisy. Okay for an office environment but not where you want quiet.

Other Thoughts: There is a switch in the back to turn the fan off but most drives will get hot enough that the fans should be on.

1 out of 5 eggsWould not recommend

Pros: None for me

Cons: As other reviews stated, the latches that hold the drives in are worthless. The enclosure I received was faulty. I decided to go a different direction.
