2 out of 5 eggsPretty Awful

Pros: It can work, and when it does it is fairly fast

Cons: Must have a loose connection or something, because one drive almost always ends up being dropped by the Venus resulting in a sudden end to data transfer, whether it's trying to grab a homework before class, streaming a movie, or playing a game. Always freezes up in the worst time.

A horrible hassle to get Windows to recognize it, often forcing me to restart. If I don't get a prompt telling me Windows needs to run check disk on it, I know something is wrong, which is in itself wrong. I haven't been able to have it actually work just by plugging it in to a PC that's already on.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to accommodate my latest mITX build, which only has space for one full SSD and one mSATA SSD. I now am looking to buy a different case so I don't need to rely on poor hardware.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat product but!!!

Pros: The hard drive enclosure works with 3 and 4TB drives works wiht USB 3 and 2 just fine. By the way i'm using it on a older I7 system that dose not support 3 and 4TB drives and it work with USB 2.

Cons: Only problem with this drive enclosure is the latches on the drive sleds they have a very cheap feel and dont lock right.

Other Thoughts: If your not going to be hot-swappable drives or moving this unit it will be fine, if they fix the latches this will be a great product hands down and I'd give it 5 eggs.

4 out of 5 eggsAMS DS-DS3RPRO2

Pros: Looks nice. :)
it just arrived yesterday, and I haven't actually used it yet, so its hard to say. I will post more later if anything notable comes up.

Cons: As other reviewers have noted, the latches don't hold well. more below.

it would be nice if the fan switch (on the rear) had a low/high option, since other reviewers have noted it is kinda noisy.

Other Thoughts: The latches are odd: when there is no drive in the sled, they slide in and latch fine. when there IS a drive in the sled, they still latch fine AS LONG AS IT ISN'T SHOVED ALL THE WAY INTO ITS SLOT. This makes me think that the drive (at least the ones I got) are just a tad longer than the housing designers expected, preventing the sled from going in the last little fraction of a millimeter.

however, I expect to be able to deal with it.

though I didn't buy from NewEgg, I'm posting the comment here, as the place I did buy it doesn't have any comments at all, and I wanted to add my thoughts on the latch issue here.

5 out of 5 eggsNice replacement for the Venus 2

Pros: I bought this as a replacement to AMS's Venus es2 box. I was a little hesitant with the other reviews stating quality issues, but I've found nothing as extreme as what's being described there. Even the drive ejector button wasn't near as easy to force an accidental pull out of the drives like what other people are stating. The construction is overall solid. Accepted my 1tb WD green drives without an issue. I am using this in a mirror RAID setup for file backups.

Cons: Fan is loud.
Lack of RAID management software included.

Other Thoughts: You can find RAID management software designed for the Jmicron chipset they use. It may not be recommended, but it allows me to check on the status of the drives when needed.

3 out of 5 eggsOk quality - Noisy fan

Pros: The unit does what it advertises.

Cons: Build quality isn't the best and the fan is noisy. Okay for an office environment but not where you want quiet.

Other Thoughts: There is a switch in the back to turn the fan off but most drives will get hot enough that the fans should be on.

1 out of 5 eggsWould not recommend

Pros: None for me

Cons: As other reviews stated, the latches that hold the drives in are worthless. The enclosure I received was faulty. I decided to go a different direction.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far good

Pros: Very heavy construction. I give me a choice RAID0 and RAID1 or one large drive or two drives. Fan is keep hard drives cool. I'm using 2-2TB Seagate drives in a RAID1. There are LEDs to show hard drive is connected and W/R Also LEDs to show connection type and access for USB and eSATA.. Had no problems installing hard drives.

Cons: The hard drive eject buttons are very sensitive. But no problems so far.

4 out of 5 eggsGood enclosure

Pros: Works great in a raid 0 configuration. I'm using two Seagate STBD4000400 4TB drives. This is my first eSATA setup and I'm satisfied to say the least. It took almost 24 hours to copy 2TB of data to a 3TB USB drive. It only took 3 hours to copy the same data to the external raid.

Cons: Like the other reviewers have stated, the drive latches need improvement because they open to easily.

3 out of 5 eggsGood, but could have been great...

Pros: The case itself is solid. Drives are easy to install and the RAID is easy to configure. USB 3.0 speed is nice.

Cons: It's the latches on the sleds that are the problem - they are made out of flimsy plastic and while I could get them to close and stay closed, any bump on the case and they'd both pop open - meaning the drives could potentially slide out of the enclosure.

I didn't really feel like sending the enclosure back as everything else about it is fine, and I only plan on swapping drives in the event of a failure - so, I used a couple small zip ties and and zipped the levers in to a closed position.

Other Thoughts: I had a DS3R-Pro as well, and the sled doors were much better designed with that model in my view - not sure why they changed them with this new model.

That earlier model was also slimmer than the DS3R-Pro2 (power button was above the drives rather than on the side) and I miss that smaller form factor.

But, the DS3R-Pro could only support drives up to 1TB. With the DS3R-Pro2, I'm running two 3TB drives as 6TB stripe and there are no issues at all with that big of a volume.

5 out of 5 eggsAMS VENUS DS-DS3RPRO2

Pros: Very simple to set up, well constructed "see cons" nice and quiet.

Cons: The release clips on the drives don't hold very well.

Other Thoughts: I have owned 4 other Venus External Enclosures both SATA & PATA. The only problem I ever had was a power supply gone bad & a broken release arm "My Bad".
