Athena Power AP-RRP4ATX6508 80 PLUS Certified 20+4Pin 2 x 500W Mini Redundant Server Power Supply

  • Creating a new definition for more power, Athena Computer Power Corp. proudly introduces the new 500 Watt PSU, the ATLAS 500, model number (AP-RRP4ATX6508). This Mini-Redundant power supply provides power reliability to server builders and computer users with the power they want and need. The Mini-Redundant power supply unit not only services an extra unit that standbys 24/7, but also minimizes power lost and creates efficiency by eliminating issues of overheating power adapters. The ATLAS 500 Watt Mini-Redundant features an Active PFC (Power Factor Correction), remote ON/OFF function, and 80PLUS certification.
Overview

Hot Swap and Power Redundancy

  • This feature is an important asset to today’s server builders. Having an uninterrupted power source that improves reliability in servers this is a key essential in today’s need to be constantly online. When two power supplies are installed, they are redundant, sharing the electrical load equally if both supplies are operational. If one power supply stops functioning for any reason, the remaining power supply instantly begins providing all the power the router needs for normal functioning, and can provide full power indefinitely.

Active PFC, Full Range, and You

  • The Active PFC and Full Range function provides a smarter PSU. Able to detect the differences of wattage that is needed to power up your system, you can be rest assured as it will provide and maintain the most suitable power needed.

Multiple Support Function

  • Supporting ATX V2.3, EPS-12V Xeon, and i7 motherboards it also includes 4x PCI-E 6-pin connectors for advanced graphics cards running in quad SLI or Crossfire configuration. This PSU can be used for mini-servers, server assemblies, and rackmount servers.

Dual Front Fan

  • With its dual fan features located at the front of the power supply, the rear fan intakes the heat that is produced inside the server or system and pushes it through the front fan. This design allows the power supply to be able to take 100% of the heat that is generated by the interior system and pushes it out of the server/system. While some other PSU fans work differently, this dual fan design is targeted to maintain a reliable source of power and keeping the system cool. Some may second guess this dual fan feature because it will increase noise volumes, but with its thermal fan speed control it will detect the amount of heat generated by the computer and spin accordingly.

Smart Auto Fan Speed Controller

  • Thermal fan speed control will detect the amount of heat generated by the computer. Using this controller to detect the heat levels, it will automatically adjust the fan speed accordingly and the need to worry about the heat levels, of a PSU, becomes almost non-existent.

80PLUS Certification

  • Saving energy has become an important factor when choosing the correct power supply. The ATLAS 500 Watt is one of the latest Mini Redundant PSU’s that brandishes 80PLUS certification. Providing efficiency during max and low loads this PSU lives up to the standards of today’s world.

Pros: running 24/7 for 3 1/2 years

Cons: yes it's a tight fit, but it's cheap for a dual 500

1 out of 5 eggsBe ware!

Pros: Form factor, it fits into a standard ATX case...

Cons: Terrible quality, our unit went bad on us only after 3 days... no spare modules are available, have to order another unit - hope to make one working out of two... no time to integrate another case.

Other Thoughts: Unexpectedly bad quality. Think if you want to gamble with your time and money...

4 out of 5 eggsGreat power unit, doesn't fit though

Pros: Great price, decent power. Good build quality

Cons: As some have noted, it doesn't fit some server cases. I put this into a 4U rack mount case. I had to go crazy on the cutout on the case with a dremmel. About 30 min of precision grinding, and it is now in the case, and securely mounted. The power supply is just 1/8" too big, and then it has screws that sick out to the sides, that will need to be cleared as well.

Other Thoughts: Good unit, but may not fit your case. Not a deal breaker if you have a dremmel with a cutoff wheel.

4 out of 5 eggsWorking 6 months so far...

Pros: Quieter than the one in the previous server. Loud audio indicator of failed unit. Fit the ATX 4u server case fairly easily, did have to remove one flange bracket, however it seems it was made for easy removal.

Cons: Have a small business client I built a server for, using this redundant module. The problem is now that replacement modules are very hard to find, Newegg has it listed as "Out of Stock, may not be restocked".

Other Thoughts: I can't convince my client to pick up an extra, saying that he'd like to wait until it's an issue to spend the cash. And now I look like a jerk because I recommended this hardware that looks like it's inevitable to let me down.

Please tell me what is the point of building redundant REPLACEABLE power supplies if you aren't gonna provide replacements for the foreseeable future?

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate on 5/15/2012 review

Pros: Just wanted to update-

Original unit is still going strong after ~2 years running 24x7, never missed a beat. Also purchased 2 others since then and no problems at all.

Cons: Still haven't found any...

3 out of 5 eggsTricky Fitting

Pros: It is a 500W redundant, 80 PLUS certified power supply.

Cons: When I measured it myself, I found that the actual dimensions were closer to 6" x 3.25" than the Mini Redundant standard 5.91" x 3.31" which made it difficult to get this thing to fit properly in my 4U case. I wound up having to jury rig it by cutting out foam from the packaging to serve as spacers.

Other Thoughts: Newegg needs to include the Power Supply Form Factor as a parameter for both Power Supplies and cases. As it is now, you have to go to the case manufacturer website to find what power supply form factors are compatible with a case. Ideally, they'd also run a shopping cart check to make sure your power supply and case are actually compatible, but that would be mostly for first-time server builders like myself.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking Well

Pros: This has been running now for nearly 1 year straight (it was off for a day or two during the year is all) It appears both modules are working great as we haven't had a single power issue during this time.

Cons: The fans are a bit loud, but can deal with it.

5 out of 5 eggsSeems solid

Pros: -Very heavy unit, seems well built.

-All internal components visible from the outside look to be hi-quality(no off-brand caps, etc).

-Perfectly stable under load, barely even a flinch when tested spinning up (5) 15k600 sas drives non-staggered(normally I enable staggered spin-up regardless)

-Runs cool, the 80plus rating shows here, my older SM redundant psu's run much hotter even with very little load.

Cons: None so far, as long as it keeps the server running it's perfect as far as I am concerned.

Other Thoughts: It sounds like it belongs in a server room(hi-speed fans). Something to keep in mind depending on where you are going to place this.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks As Advertized

Pros: -80+ unit for this price
-Active PFC
-Solid construction (it's very heavy, no bulging caps)
-Output tested within specifications
-Tolerates single module failure with no voltage drop
-Great service (see other thoughts)

Cons: -Difficult to mount in some chassis (put this in first)
-Does not come with documentation
-Runs a bit too loud for anything but the server room

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm very impressed with this unit. Output tested almost dead on with the supplied specs. The packaging didn't come with a manual, but I contacted Athena support and they were happy to provide me with relevant (if a little sparse) documentation. I did have a module fail on me, but the server continued to run fine on just one module. I sent an email to Athena and they called me within 15 minutes, agreed to cross ship the module (shipped out the same day!), and updated my account to allow for one more module RMA within the 3 year warranty period. I've had units from Supermicro and others fail as well, but never received anything like decent support. This is just something that happens with power supplies (otherwise why would anyone purchase a redundant supply in the first place). The features for the price and outstanding customer service are what set this unit apart. I was so impressed that I'm now planning to deploy several more of these for a new virtualization project.
