5 out of 5 eggsPerfect For Upgrades and New Builds

This review is from: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 Intel 4th Gen CPU Haswell and AMD Phenom

Pros: The ModXStream Pro is a godsend for upgrading rigs that have varying amounts of internal space. I have an ancient Dell Studio XPS that was in desperate need of an upgrade and I vastly overestimated how much space I had for the power supply and cables. However, thanks to the semi-modular cable design, I was able to barely squeeze the power supply block and the required cables in without too much difficulty. Aside from that, the product possesses great build quality. The power supply itself is very solid and compact. The cables are insulated with good material and are wrapped with a mesh that makes them easy to work with in small spaces. I do not move my computer around at all, but so far the cables have remained in position. The fan is relatively quiet, but can speed up to a soft hum when the power supply is under a load.

- semi-modular cable design
- great PSU and cable build quality
- cables remain in position
- relatively quiet fan

Cons: None observed.

2 out of 5 eggsMine also died

This review is from: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 Intel 4th Gen CPU Haswell and AMD Phenom

Pros: Worked fine while it worked

Cons: As with dozens of others reported recently, mine died after about 3.5 years (just past the warranty, of course). It tripped a breaker in my house, but no damage to the computer.

Other Thoughts: Seems like maybe these were all part of a bad batch? Or maybe just a bad design? Just wish it happened 6 months ago under the warranty...

2 out of 5 eggsshort life report

This review is from: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 Intel 4th Gen CPU Haswell and AMD Phenom

Pros: Fulfilled my needs. No problems. Deducted two eggs due to high failure rate reported.

Cons: Purchased 10/5/2010, stopped working 3/22/14 (3 year warranty stamped on the box). I see that there are very many recent reports of this. The product box says "High Reliability (100,000 Hr. MTBF)" Perhaps it should have been supplemented with estimated Power-On Hours.

Other Thoughts: seemed to pump out quite a bit of heat if you ask me

1 out of 5 eggsDied at 14 Months

This review is from: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 Intel 4th Gen CPU Haswell and AMD Phenom

Pros: Quiet.

Cons: Threw a breaker in my house, and it was done. Only after 14 months. Fortunately all i needed to replace was the power supply. I would have expected a longer life than this.

1 out of 5 eggsFailure

This review is from: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 Intel 4th Gen CPU Haswell and AMD Phenom

Pros: Ran quietly and smoothly. Did what it was supposed to.

Cons: Lasted 5 months and now it is non-functioning. Powerless PSU!
Web site says this unit no long support under warranty while trying to fill out an RMA request?

Other Thoughts: Trying to get RMA. Will update!

2 out of 5 eggsFailed at 3.5 Years

This review is from: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 Intel 4th Gen CPU Haswell and AMD Phenom

Pros: It was cheap and worked well for 3.5 years.

Cons: It failed at 3.5 years... someone else posted that theirs failed after 3.5 years as well. So if you still have one of these and have been running it 24/7 for over 3 years you may be in for trouble in the future.

Other Thoughts: Worth the extra cash to get a Seasonic.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted

This review is from: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 Intel 4th Gen CPU Haswell and AMD Phenom

Pros: No problems running during 3.5 yrs.

When it did fail, it was contained within the power supply and did not fry my motherboard nor my video card.

Cons: Wish it had a longer warranty. Failed shortly after 3 yrs.

5 out of 5 eggsOwned for 2 1/2 years so far

This review is from: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 Intel 4th Gen CPU Haswell and AMD Phenom

Pros: Although the fan is much larger than the fan on the OEM PSU this replaced, it isn't noticeably louder.

I had no trouble at all mounting it in my system (tower with top mount), and I had less extraneous cable length than previously (see cons).

The modular design is, of course, very handy. No problems with the power connectors. The nylon netting around the cable bundles is a nice touch.

I have a fairly old processor (Core 2 Duo Conroe), so I can't attest to how well it powers a newer system. I do have three HDDs (two SATA, one IDE), two SATA DVD drives, a PCI slot fan, and a newer NVidia graphics card (Fermi) running, and I've never had any power issues with this PSU.

I was somewhat concerned about heat since the intake fan is in a different place than the OEM PSU. However, after installation, my temps were actually a little lower. This probably had more to do with the replacement of the graphics card than the PSU, but I haven't had any detrimental heat issues since I installed it, so I know it isn't running too hot, at least.

Cons: As I'm sure other reviewers have mentioned and as can also be seen in the picture, the motherboard power cable is not modular, making this PSU more semi-modular. I personally didn't care (I have to power my motherboard, after all), although admittedly it would have been less awkward to maneuver into place if the motherboard power cable had be removable.

Although the modular design allows for better airflow and better placement of cables, I did find that the cables were markedly stiffer than the OEM cables, making them more difficult to adjust properly. They're visibly larger in diameter, which is probably more important than pliability anyway.

As aforementioned, I had no trouble fitting it into my top mount tower. However, depending on the positioning of the motherboard in relation to the PSU, I can see that the length of the cables (the motherboard power cable especially) might not be adequate. Since I didn't want the cables taking up extra room, the fact that it was only a little longer than I needed wasn't a problem, but it is something to consider.

Other Thoughts: The zippered case for the unused cables is a nice touch.

When I bought this, there was a rebate offered, and I personally had no issues with the rebate process. It went quite smoothly. However, I'm not sure if they tell you ahead of time that they pay with a prepaid card rather than a check.
