4 out of 5 eggsNo HD screws included

Pros: About what I expected. The one egg ding was for the hassle of assembly. See the cons for the skinny.

Cons: Be prepared to spend about a half an hour grinding off the heads of the HD screws and polishing them in order to get the tray to slide into the slot without binding. If you are lucky the screws you have are long enough to grip securely in the holes in the back of the HD. Fortunately I had 20 years of assorted computer related screws to sort through in order to find four that were long enough.

Other Thoughts: Overall a nice external HD enclosure.

5 out of 5 eggsRecommend: Buy

Pros: This is at least my fifth Macally 2.5" enclosure over the last ten years or so and I keep coming back.

The enclosure is very robust thanks to its sturdy all-metal case*. A very sturdy product that does exactly what it says in the marketing.

A great product line for keeping your high-capacity portable drive safe.

*The end caps are plastic, but the main drive+controller length chassis is a solid piece of aluminum.

Cons: Don't use Macally cases for drives that pull a lot of power (and thus need to dissipate a lot of heat). The case is not vented and, while it is slightly ribbed, cooling is entirely passive. You will burn up the disk and/or controller if you use a top-end 7200rpm disk in these cases. Been there, done that, learned from it.

Other Thoughts: Comes with a USB3 A to micro-B cable. IF you need to use this with a USB2 interface at some point, you will need a USB2 "Y" A to micro-B cable.
To be more clear, a USB2 "Y" cable is a USB2 cable with an extra "A" connector to draw additional power from a second USB port for drives that need to pull more than 500mA, which will be pretty much anything other than an SSD.
Singleprice Product ID 5620 + a miniB->microB adapter off of Jungle is what you want.

These are perfect for older 9.5mm WD Greens or current WD Reds, but I've generally had 9.5mm 5400rpm HGST/Hitachi drives in these cases over the years.

Also, I've not tested the firewire functionality on any macally enclosures since the PATA days, so my applicable experience is entirely with the SATA3/SATA2 interfaces.

1 out of 5 eggsArrived non-functional.

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Plugged it into a Mac, then into a PC. Used all external interfaces. No computer recognized the drive I had put into this enclosure. I'm sure I just got a defective unit, but the fact that that can happen at all is disappointing.

Other Thoughts: This thing was terrible for me. Buy this and you're playing a lottery.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid and Speedy

Pros: Fast: Firewire 800 beats out USB 2
Solid construction: gel padding near screws, solid board, metal housing

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this to house my Macbook's internal drive after I swapped out for a 128 GB SSD. I get at least 60 MB/s copying over Firewire 800 to my SATA II 500 gb drive with this enclosure. I was using another enclosure, a cheap one, and didn't get this speed. Doesn't feel like the drive ever left my laptop.

Didn't try the USB 3.0 connection as I don't have any of those ports.

Included cables are about 2 ft.

5 out of 5 eggsNicely made

Pros: Solid construction.
Good chipset - it's reliable -no errors on large transfers.
Fairly fast transfer speeds.
Aluminum body makes a good heatsink for the enclosed drive.

Cons: Very bright led light - I have to cover it up with a sticker.

Other Thoughts: I have bought a lot of these over the years - I use them as TimeMachine backup drives, and I velcro them to the back of the iMac so they're completely out of sight (except for that blue led light!). No power supply necessary - the iMac seems to be able power them no problem (the iMac can provide 7W per firewire port, which seems to be enough).

5 out of 5 eggsSolid enclosure

Pros: Solid construction. Body mostly aluminum. FW 800 and USB 3. Comes with both cables. Rubber strips top & bottom for cushioning outside.

Cons: Finicky HD mounting. Front LED brighter than you'd expect.

Other Thoughts: The unit fits together solidly. That loose bit flopping around inside the case on arrival is the silica gel pack, it wasn't broken in the mail. :)

When you screw down the hard drive, don't tighten the screws AT ALL! Turn them just far enough to be in all the way, stop when you feel any additional pressure. When sliding the unit back together, the inside case "rails" should slide between the circuit board & bottom plate smoothly with only a bit of pressure. If it's fighting you or feels grating, stop and back the HD mounting screws out until the rubber washers between them are not compressed at all. Also watch to not pinch/tear the padded spacers at the end when sliding it together.

The front LED is surprisingly bright. It approaches the intensity of those tiny, cheap keyring LED flashlights. Maybe put a small piece from a sticky note over it - it still shines through clearly but without the harshness.

The overbright LED and self-defeating cushioned HD mounting are minor gripes, worth 1/2 egg deduction but not quite a full one. Giving it 5 since it included both cables.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

Pros: The unit is very sturdy overall. It's very well made. The unit offers a 5V DC plug in case your drive requires additional power, such as in the case of 10,000RPM or higher drives. The Firewire 800 and USB 3.0 are both bootable on Mac.

Cons: 1) The covers are plastic, whereas the rest of the unit is made of a nice thick bit of aluminum.
2) The blue LED on the front is INSANELY bright. Maybe it's just my being nitpicky, but it can light up a wall in a well-light room...

Other Thoughts: While not a negative, it should be known that when you mount your HDD/SSD onto the mounting plate, don't make it tight. Make it tight enough to sit the drive properly, but the gap between the main piece of aluminum and the circuit board for the SATA reader is what holds the entire thing together. It's a great design, but if you tighten it too much, the unit no longer slides back together.
