1 out of 5 eggsExpect to replace it

Pros: Looks good. Power switch is nice. Connectivity options are nice...or they would be if the unit didn't die.

Cons: Three of these died. MacAlly ignored my support request. The power supply is a cheap wall wart.

Other Thoughts: I thought this was such a good unit I bought three of them. They all died. Forget about MacAlly responding to any request that they make good on it. I will never waste my money on another MacAlly product.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good enclosure for both Mac and Windows

Pros: Two very fast interfaces in one device, it looks great, accents a Mac computer nicely, passive cooling seems to be adequate

Cons: LED activity indicator is extremely bright, awkward stand/feet, possible SATA connector seating issue (minor)

Other Thoughts: This is a great drive enclosure and exactly what I was looking for.

I have a late-2009 iMac withe Firewire 800, and a 2011 HP Envy 15 with USB 3.0, so I wanted an enclosure that took advantage of both computers' interfaces. This was the ticket.

The first drive I put it (a 300GB Intel 320 Series SSD) worked flawlessly. Extremely quick, as would be expected, and was immediately recognized by both computers. I used a third-party 2.5" to 3.5" adapter/mounting bracket for SATA drives to accommodate the smaller drive.

The second drive I installed in the enclosure was a 3.5" 1TB Hitachi, and it would not read on the first attempt at installing it. This may or may not have been the fault of the drive, the fault of the enclosure, or my fault as the installer, but it seemed that after some wiggling and adjustments to the mounting screws, all was well. Minor issue, and like I said, it could have been an issue that was not enclosure-related.

Also, if you like your bedroom dark at night, you're either going to have to turn this bad boy off or deal with an insanely bright blue activity LED. A minor gripe, but worth mentioning.

One quirk I found with this enclosure is that the feet are a little weird. It comes with a sort of clamp that acts as a single "foot" on which the enclosure can stand, or two small, flat, plastic feet that screw into the front and back of it. The reason I say they're a bit weird is that the clamp will certainly scratch the enclosure if the utmost care is not taken in attaching it and removing it (or if it happens to move while attached to the drive, a very real possibility) and the two flat plastic feet will spin and become misaligned if the drive is frequently moved, potentially causing it to become unstable and fall over. To circumvent either of these possibilities, I have the drive in a permanent location on its side, with neither of the supplied feet attached.

Overall, a great drive with two great interfaces, and it looks good too - if you have a Mac computer, it will compliment it nicely.

4 out of 5 eggsUnique Triple Threat

Pros: Unusual find for an external HDD case with USB 3.0, 1394b, & eSATA. Just what I needed although I will probably use the USB 3.0 connection most of the time on my newer machines.

Cons: On/Off button is backlit with a blue LED which blinks subtly during drive access - not bright enough to be plainly discerning. Back panel is simulated aluminum on plastic. Stand could fit tighter - it has some wobbly play, not significant. Premium price for all the ports but then premium number of ports.

Other Thoughts: Thunderbolt would have been a welcome and needed addition for me.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Enclosure!

Pros: This enclosure looks really good and feels to be high quality. I had no problems installing a 3.5" drive with 3TB capacity. This appears to be the max capacity drive according to the user's manual. It included a rather short FireWire 800 cable but I'm using that to daisy-chain with another external hard drive and so far, so good. It is connected to my iMac without issue.

Cons: FireWire 800 cable is pretty short

5 out of 5 eggsExternal HDD enclosure with all the connections

Pros: The Macally external enclosure has eSATA, Firewire and USB3.0 connectivity. It is lightweight and easy to install a hard drive or SSD drive. Matches a MacPro tower. The enclosure is quiet has the power button on the front that lights up and is quick and easy to power on. Great price.

Cons: The power cable is lightweight and stiff. It is long enough, but has a wall wart power plug that I didn't have room for on my power strip. I had to use a short extension cord to plug it in. There is no fan.

Other Thoughts: I had a 1TB hard disk drive that I removed from an old computer and wanted to use as a backup drive. I wanted an external enclosure that would have connections for my existing computer as well as be future proof. I was looking for an enclosure that had eSATA, Firewire and USB 3.0. I also wanted the connection speeds to be fast. I searched and had difficulty finding an external enclosure that had all the connections that was of good quality. I like Macally products and discovered that the Macally G-S350SU3B2 external enclosure has all the connectivity I wanted and and a great price. Many other enclosures cost a lot more. The power cord is lightweight and fairly stiff, but works fine. I would like to have a more sturdy cable. This power cable has a wall wart transformer on the power cable end so it was too large to plug into the only outlet I had available on my power strip. I had to use a short 1 foot extension power cable to get it all to work. Installing the hard drive in the enclosure was fairly easy. You only need a #2 phillips screwdriver. The enclosure is made of Aluminum and well built, but light weight. It was easy to get into the enclosure to install the hard drive. There are easy instructions. The only problem I had was when I installed the hard drive the power button cable slid easily under the drive and covered one of the screw holes so I had to remove the drive and move the cable to the side and re-seat the drive and attach the screws. The cable could be taped or mounted to the side better, but this is no big thing. I just didn't want to pinch the cable. The power button is on the front and is easy to turn on and off. The button lights up when on and flashes when the drive is accessing data. The enclosure comes in a good box with a firewire cable and USB 3.0 cable and two types of stands for upright operation. This enclosure works great with my MacPro. This enclosure will work great with both a 3.5" hard drive or a 2.5" SSD drive with an adapter. I couldn't find anything better anywhere with eSATA, Firewire and USB 3.0 ports and these specs at this price. I'm very happy with my purchase and it arrived very quickly from Newegg.
