3 out of 5 eggsnot so satisfied

Pros: nice and sturdy, stays fairly warm, but not hot. nice LED functionality. blue, red, pink...

Cons: while hooked up to ethernet, it does drop connectivity. does not work as simple as you'd think. must activate using software using the keys in the manual. OH! big CON!! CANNOT have hooked up to usb while wanting to send data to it via ethernet. have it hooked up to a WD HD Media player and i have to unhook the usb in order to get it to recognize. pain in the rear. makes the whole thing pointless and the USB is much faster than the ethernet anyway....

Other Thoughts: works good as a basic enclosure.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked well as a USB drive for a year and a half.

Cons: Died after a year and a half. Cumbersome to use if you are going to keep switching hard drives which I do.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: working with a 1tb WD harddrive using it as a lan server. Excellent Tech support, as long as you don't mind them answering the phone Hello? Shipped with a bad sata cable, they mailed another one to me for free.

Cons: heat! plugged it in and about 30min later my drive was at 160deg. Nothing a Dremel tool can't fix, now there is a hole with an 80mm fan on the side. Drive never exceeds 84deg under full load. With at 10/100 router expect about 9.6Mb a sec. I can stream 3 DVD's to three different computers at the same time.

Other Thoughts: Wonder if a Gigabit router will increase the speed of this drive?

4 out of 5 eggsuseful network storage

Pros: Networkable and USB 2.0 compatibility as advertised. Looks great sitting anywhere with silver and chrome. Supports file formats I need which are at this point NTFS only. Stable on my network, which makes me happy. I have success with a 500 and 640 GB drive. I have also heard success with 1TB drives, but have not tested.

Cons: Uneasy about the idea of NDAS. Unhappy with the documentation and support available through OKGear company. SATA model gets rather warm possibly due to the paint or coating on the aluminum shell. I have a PATA model of the same product with the PATA similar HDD which never gets close to the same heat output as this SATA model. Not adequate cooling in my opinion. The documentation on the HDD LED for the enclosure is not correct. The HDD LED cable can easily be cut or grafted by the sharp internal aluminum edges when sliding the HDD into the enclosure. The website doesn't have links to the proper website for the NDAS management utility.

Other Thoughts: What the documentation won't tell you:
1.) The utility to connect to this device has regular updates from the company Ximeta. Google that for the website. 2.) The key for the device is located on CD jacket that came with the enclosure. 3.) The HDD LED cable light should have the pin that has the triangle ^ symbol on the pin closest to the HDD. If the HDD LED is always red then just reverse the cable.

2 out of 5 eggsInscrutable

Pros: Easy to set up/ relatively inexpensive for the features.

Cons: It doesn't work. Well, it did for a month or so. I plugged it into my Linksys BEFSR81 wired router, and installed the software on two Vista machines. I copied tons of files over, it was working very well.
Then we took a couple of weeks vacation, so I powered the network hardware and all the computers down while we were gone. When I came back and powered everything up, suddenly the drive only shows up as offline - the computers can't find it.
I followed the recommendations to uninstall the software, remove antivirus software, turn off the firewall and reinstall. It still didn't work.

Other Thoughts: It still works as a USB drive without any problems, but that isn't what I bought it for. Don't buy it to use as a network drive.

The proprietary NDAS protcol doesn't use TCP/IP so any well-known network troubleshooting is of no use when things go wrong.

Ximeta and OKGear's web sites are terrible and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get support beyond the FAQs.

2 out of 5 eggsBe Careful

Pros: Great as an USB external drive.

Cons: Be careful what you put on it using it as a network drive. I run 3 xp machines with the network software that came with the drive. If there is a glitch in their software while you are writing to the hard drive you will have major problems. The file structure will be corrupted. After 14 hours of figuring out what happened, researching recovery software, & running the recovery, I have most of my info in folders that are renamed in the recovery format. I will have to go through about 80 gigs of files, sort & rename the folders. Use the network function with great care. There was some data that was not recoverable.

Other Thoughts: Back to the drawing board for network storage. NAS devices have their issues also. Looks like I will build a file server (Linux). Oh Well

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome Buy!

Pros: I put a 1TB Seagate SATA2 H.D.D. in this enclosure. It had no problem using it on either USB 2.0 or 10/100 Ethernet. The included software enables it to be used over your network as a "local" drive. This device is a NDAS not a NAS. Don't be confused. You must use the software that is included on all computers that will be connecting to it via your network. (unless you are going to share it out from a pc, but then why would you buy anything more then a USB 2.0 enclosure?)

As long as you know what your buying, its a great cheap box! Please read my other thoughts as I include other options that are not explained about this box.

Cons: Slower R/W speed then I would expect from a SATA2/USB 2.0 External drive. This is most likely due to the enclosure actually being an IDE enclosure that they put a SATA converter into. But still worth it for the added functionality, I won't take stars away.

Also, make sure to get a good H.D.D. that can take the heat of a fully boxed enclosure with no fan. If Your H.D.D. can handle the heat, it is a VERY quiet enclosure that you have to feel the vibrations of the H.D.D. to know if its running!

Other Thoughts: When I received this enclosure I read the manual. (Funny cause I never read the manual.) I found out that these enclosures (When using the included software via your network.) can be set up in RAIDs. That's right, if you have 2 of these enclosures you can set up RAID 1 and 0. If you have 3 or more you can set up a RAID 5!!! What a great concept! Buy 3 enclosures and 3 1TB H.D.D.s and set em up in a RAID 5. You'll get better speed and redundancy! Mind you, this would lock you into using them ONLY as network drives, but if that's what you need this seems to be a very cheap and yet impressive idea. (Note: I have not tried this yet, it is just an option that I am explaining.)

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

Pros: I was referred to buy this NetDisk by a coworker. This is a great way to share media files without having to constantly transfer the USB cable between computers. I pulled my 500GB HDD and put it in the case with no trouble at all. Set up was a breeze, and even if you google "NDAS" you can find ximeta's site which has OS X 10.5 (leopard) drivers. I've spent a good few hours testing it out on Windows, Linux, and Mac and The NetDisk works like a charm. This is a great way for my family to have a central hub for storing pictures and music.

Cons: Transfer speeds, especially over wireless, are lengthy. In testing today, I transferred about 25GB of music and pictures over wifi using my notebook to the NetDisk which took greater than 2 hours to complete. Using our family computer that is wired to the router, the transfer rates over Ethernet is vastly greater than that of wifi's, but still can't hold a candle to USB. Another downside is that only one computer can hold "Read/Write" status when more than one computer is connected, while the others are restricted to "Read Only". This case does get hot, as it is without a fan.

Other Thoughts: Overall an excellent product, especially now that my family has a central and accessible hard drive for our pictures and media.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Easy to install. I did go to the ximeta.com website and download the latest software. I added a temperature sensor to monitor the hard drive temp and it runs at a constant 103.7. When I copy large amounts over to the drive the temp says the same so temperature is not a concern even though it does not have a fan. The case is aluminum and helps as a heat sink.
I have 5 computers connected to this drive and did a speed test from one of the computers and it was a steady 8MB second.

Cons: Just use the latest software from Ximeta and make sure you Convert the drive to Basic as in the instructions.
