New ways to take care of your batteries and maximize runtime:
Battery Matching
In most devices, usually two or more batteries are used together. When batteries are used in a series, the performance is limited by the worst one. In other words, one poorly performing battery can significantly reduce the device runtime.
Battery matching refers to grouping batteries with similar “actual” capacity. To perform this, use the Refresh & Analyze mode to determine the battery capacity. Group batteries with capacity within about +/- 5% of the rated capacity.
Battery Forming
New batteries and those stored for extended period become chemically deactivated. Battery forming is a charge-discharge-charge cycle which forces a full charge into the battery at a very slow rate. This process activates the battery. In certain cases, it needs to be repeated two or three times.
Battery forming can be performed using the Break-In mode.

5 out of 5 eggsOh my {deity} it's gigantic

Pros: I have never owned such a nice, feature-packed, battery charger in all my life.

Cons: None that I can see...so far.

Other Thoughts: This thing is BIG. I mean it is BIG. I didn't think to check the dimensions when I bought it, and just assumed it was similar in size to my old Maha/Powerex charger that I bought about 7 or 8 years ago. Well let me tell you---I was wrong. I went from something the size of a calculator, to something the size of a cantaloupe.

I think it's literally too big to travel with easily.

So just be aware of that. It's a feature-rich, awesome, charger, though.

5 out of 5 eggsupdate

Pros: Update to my previous review. I had said the charger broke, but it WAS in fact the ac adapter as I suspected. When I contacted MAHA via their website to ask the specs of the adapter (i.e. the precise size of the plug) so that I could replace it to see if that fixed the charger, they volunteered to replace the adapter for free even though it was out of warrantee, and it arrived quite quickly.

Cons: As I said before, really bright screen.

2 out of 5 eggsbroke after 100 days

Pros: Charges batteries individually so you can charge batteries of different capacities at same time.

Cons: Unnecessarily bright screen. Stopped working after about 100 days. I suspect the dc adapter.

Other Thoughts: It has a program that is supposed to bring rechargeables that lost their capacity to hold a charge back to life. I tried this on a pair I had but it didn't work. That doesn't mean it doesn't work, just not in my case. Mine were probably beyond help. I only mention it so that you don't get your hopes up for the old rechargeable batteries you thought this might be able to fix.

5 out of 5 eggsFlawless

Pros: Works as intended and without a hitch. Requires a bit of education first on proper usage if you've never charged/discharged batteries.

Cons: NONE

5 out of 5 eggsUpdage

Pros: This charger does indeed charge automatically once you put the battery in but it takes a few seconds for it to kick in (it is waiting for your input in case you want to set manually rate of charge and other parameters)

Cons: no con not even the price but if you are new to chargers--this is the absolute best with individual battery charge and conditioning and breaking in and old battery restoration

Other Thoughts: If you like to use rechargeable batteries then get this charger--preferable with 8 pack AA batteries included as a combo deal and definitely when it's on sale. I highly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth the price

Pros: Gives you options and control over charging, reconditioning and maintaining of your batteries. It made some very old batteries usable again and it made noticeable difference in battery life after reconditioning for other batteries. It also lets you verify that a battery is bad which would be a guessing game otherwise.

Cons: The screen stays on all the time. I'm afraid this will result in premature failure of the screen. The screen is also very bright, so bright that with two oft these I need to close to door to my "computer room" or I'll see the light glow from my bedroom.

They're large, too large to carry on hikes or bike rides, etc. I use compact chargers on trips and only use those at home to recondition my batteries.

Other Thoughts: I've been MAHA fan for a long time.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent charger

Pros: * charges batteries individually
* measures actual battery capacity through discharge
* delta-V charging, selectable (dis)charge currents
* battery cycling to allow you to revive old, semi-broken batteries

Cons: * fails to charge batteries broken by bad chargers - it simply resets without error if batteries initial resistance is too high
* display brightness is not adjustable

Other Thoughts: Not all batteries are created equal. I've recently came across a major brand AAA batteries that just did not want to charge properly. The manufacturer were kind enough to issue a refund. Without this charger, I would have never known these batteries were broken. The same brand batteries were 99.5+% within spec for the AA flavor.

Charger was able to revive 10 year old batteries to acceptable capacity.

This is a charger of chargers. Best money ever spent.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding service

Pros: I second all the positive things said in other reviews. Great charger!

Here's the story of outstanding service. I had on hand several Energizer NiMH batteries-- the kind another reviewer said negative things about. Some of them showed up as "HIGH" resistance on this charger, meaning that they were defective. Before disposing of them, I gave 4 of them another run-through; and after that, the charger behaved erratically and then quit entirely.

I spoke to Eric Cheng at Maha; after a couple of questions, he asked me to email him a copy of my invoice. I did, and shortly he replied that a new charger would be sent me, prepaid, along with a prepaid return label to return the defective unit. That's exactly what happened; no fuss, no rigmarole, no hassle.

This is outstanding product support. I'll be a Maha customer for a long time.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat charger

Pros: This charger has a lot of functionality. It has a multitude of modes, simple charging, refresh and analyze, break in, discharge, and cycle. Each battery slot is independent, meaning you could charge four different batteries of four different capacities in four different modes and still acheive optimal charging of each battery. It also lets you set the charge and/or discharge rate(depending on mode) for each slot. The intructions are about 2 typing pages worth of front and back text. The information contained inside is descriptive and ample enough that I wasn't left wanting. The LCD screen is large and easy to see. The setting is pretty intuitive, it just takes a minute to do. The charging process and progress can be viewed as you're charging. The slot button permits you to move between the slots and check progress on each slot so you can see if there are any problems.

Cons: The setting can be a little cumbersome due to the fact that you have to set the mode and charge and/or discharge values for every slot. So, with four batteries that's a lot of setting. I don't so much consider this a con really, but it does take several seconds for each active slot to set the values.

Other Thoughts: Just make sure you pay attention when you're setting it, as you have to set the mode and charge/discharge values for every slot individually. This is not a bad thing, as it allows you to optimize the charging of every battery. So, if you have one weak battery of the bunch, the other(s) still take a full charge. The first model I got wouldn't charge in the last slot. The rma works fine. I'm going to chalk it up to bad shipping. Just make sure you test out every single slot before your rma period has expired. I'm very satisfied with this charger, the rich functionality makes charging any combination of new, used, old, and forgotten batteries at the same time no problem, as well as varying capacities. The only real downside to this charger is if you need to charge something other than AA or AAA batteries.
