3 out of 5 eggsDecent

Pros: Well built aluminum case. Fan should keep drive cool. Fairly easy to install the drive. USB and eSATA connection makes it easy to connect to any computer while maintaining high transfer rates on a main desktop.

Cons: USB cable was cheap and broke after a month of two of very light use. The little rubber screw covers are difficult to get to stay in place and are lost easily. The glue used to affix the rubber feet is of poor quality, and the feet slide rather easily, leaving big yellow glue-smear marks. The fan also had the strength of a mewling kitten to start with, and I think the fan has stopped working since I purchased the enclosure. One of my biggest gripes about the construction is of the power cable. The design of the power cable is completely backwards. The power supply is roughly a foot away from the cable that plugs into the drive, whereas the cabling that runs to the wall is about 3ft long. If your desk is more than a foot tall, and the cabling runs down the back, the power supply has a tendency to pull the plug on the drive.

Other Thoughts: Recently my computer has been randomly freezing, with the HDD indicator remaining lit. With a little troubleshooting I discovered it was freezing whenever my external drive was being used. Turns out that the enclosure is failing. Apparently Vista freezes when an installed HDD disappears. The drive installed still works fine, however the enclosure stops transmitting data, and the indicator light powers down even when the drive is still clearly running.

I'm not sure if I just got the bad egg, but I'm about to do an RMA and get a new one.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality device

Pros: Bought three of these for business colleagues. Installed 750GB drives. No fancy lights, just a power button with red LED. Easy to setup and install. Came with some very usable software for back up management. Also came with software that helped me format a new drive with another (cheaper) enclosue that would not recognize the new drive.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Cooling fan built into the case. Drive was cool, after an initial 30GB back up of data.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks like it should, but.......

Pros: 500 GB hard drive installed very easily. All screws lined up just fine. I shut down my computer every night but when it is running, the Apricorn is running. I've been using it for about 3-1/2 months without issues. Fan is still operating and the enclosure remains cool to the touch. All in all, I'd say that the product performs as designed. Just what I expected.

Cons: The included Apricorn EZ GIG II backup software does not run from a boot. I get the message "Acronis configuration files found". It seemed to operate in the Windows environment but not from a boot which is the way I back up and restore. I spent many sessions with their tech support rep who was really no help. I also had correspondence with an apricorn test engineer who seemed interested in diagnosing the issue but I haven't heard from him in a couple of months. I know these reviews are monitored by the manufacturers so I guess I'm hoping this will jog their memory.

Other Thoughts: I would loved to have given this a "5" but the issue with the backup software is important to me since I wanted to buy a complete backup solution. My IT guy and I found that the disk booted from some computers but not others. We found that the disk would not boot from Inel bios' of a specific ID. I offered that information to the test engineer. As far as the enclosure goes, it performs as expected. I'm disappointed, however, that the software won't work and in the inability of the tech support dept. to resolve my issue. But for forty bucks, I ain't cryin'.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate: Read Errors using USB Interface

Pros: EZ GIG II software is easy and simple. Too bad it doesn't work inside Vista64 (you have to boot from CD and run it separately).

Cons: When I really needed it, it failed..... I stored a full image of my primary raid partition (using EZ Gig), and numerous incremental backups (using Microsoft Backup Utility). My raid died so I needed to restore using the image. About 20% into the restore, I got read error from the backup saying I had bad sectors on the drive. I figured the problem was with the drive. I tried several more times, failed in all cases, at a different point in the process. As a last ditch, I disassembled the kit, removed the drive and installed internally directly to the sata controller. BINGO, worked like a charm. So the problem was with either the USB connection (I tried 3 different ones) or the electronics in the enclosure.

Bottom Line: If you plan to use this solely via USB, my experience was not good and hence caution to you.

Other Thoughts: EZ GIG II is great. This is the cheapest appliance you can buy from Apricorn and get a copy of EZ GIG. Since you can't buy EZ GIG, its almost worth it to buy this empty enclosure, and just use EZ GIG.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product, wonderful Support

Pros: I used the enclosure as a media extender for my TWC DVR. The harddrive fits nicely in the case, and everything was plug-n-play.

Cons: About 1yr+ into owning this enclosure, the power supply failed & stopped working. I contacted Apicorn's support not expecting much... but I was pleasantly surprised. Brandon@Apicorn contacted me the next business day & replaced my defected power supply. Now everything is working perfectly again. Thank You Brandon!

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend this product for anyone who is looking for a media extender for their DVR. The product is well build and the company backs it up with their awesome support. I would buy again in a second.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I've had this enclosure for close to a year, around 10 months.

I was looking for an external hard drive enclosure that had two basic features: an all aluminum enclosure (for passive cooling) and a fan (for active cooling). A lot of enclosures out there boast "passive cooling" through aluminum, which is great, but it's best to keep the drive as cool as possible.

This enclosure does exactly what I wanted it to do. My drive stays cool to touch, even after transferring relatively large amounts of data, say 60 gig or so at a time. The fan barely makes any noise, really it's almost silent, which is another plus.

The enclosure is thick, as another reviewer said. It feels solid. The screws are easy open/easy close so setup is simple. The ports on the back are well-placed. The on/off switch is on the front and has a reddish-orange light. I like that the switch is on the front for easy access.

The enclosure can be placed horizontally or mounted vertically, so you get to choose.

Cons: The only thing I don't like is that the power cord feels stiff. It maintains a bent shape, so I have to move the enclosure around a little to find an angle where the cable won't push/pull against the port where it connects to the back. Other than one end of the power adapter being stiff, I have no complaints.

Other Thoughts: I spent a lot of time looking for the right enclosure. It was actually fairly difficult to find one that was aluminum and had a fan. It seems there's a big either/or: either you get aluminum and have passive cooling or get a plastic/non-aluminum case with a fan.

There seems to be a lot of market hype about "silent cooling" with aluminum, but I read a lot of reviews of external hard drives that were warm/hot to the touch. I think this stems from either poor design or the simple lack of a fan.

Another thing to note is that I didn't use the included software. I already use truecrypt for encryption, so I didn't really have a use for it. Because of this, my review doesn't cover the software cd.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not work in Vista 64 bit

Pros: Physical components (enclosure, cables, etc) are good and straightforward.

Cons: EZ GIG II software does not work on Vista64. This is not clearly stated anywhere. I installed in on my machine and it caused by machine not to boot. I had to do a "repair" install from my original Vista CD. After emailing Apricorn Tech support, I found out the lack of support for Vista64. Tech support sent me an ISO image to burn and boot from to run a version of EZ GIG outside of Vista, which seems to work fine.

5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid

Pros: Yes yes yes.. everything is right with this external enclosure. ALL of it is aluminum and thick aluminum at that. Easy to open, easy to close, high quality through and through. Never had failure, and I am not all that nice to my stuff.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Buying my second one right now. Sorry for anyone who got a bad one.

Every electronic production process is subject to spitting out a bad one every 10,000th unit of whatever it is. We all know that.

Reading Apricorn's response to one of the reviewers, I feel like if I get a bad one, they'll do right by me.

5 out of 5 eggsApricorn is the GREATEST!!

Pros: I bought my 1st Apricorn product over 4 years ago - a EZ-Bus-DT-EKIT with an old WD IDE drive installed, connected through USB. I have since bought 4 other Apricorn products including 2 of these EZ-BUS-DTS-EKIT. They have 640 GB WD drives installed and are set up in a RAID 0 array via a PCI SATA RAID Card.

All of my Apricorn products are still in use and I've never had a single hardware issue with any of them.

The software that comes with their products is very useful. It is a very good product that is easy to use and understand. It has never caused any conflicts with my operating system or other installed software.

When I've had questions or minor issues, the response from Apricorn support has always been prompt, helpful, friendly and professional. In my experiences with various tech supports, Apricorn easily stands out as the best there is.

Cons: Nothing worth mentioning. There's always things I would have done differently - like the rubber covers for the screws that hold the hard drive. Yet the covers are functional.

Of course, the fans have gotten a little louder over time, yet still quieter than the fan inside my new Dell desktop. while the fans after all of these years are still working, I wish the enclosures were designed so the fans could be easily replaced.

Other Thoughts: I strongly recommend Apricorn products. I'm not associated with Apricorn in any way, nor am I getting any form of compensation for this review. I'm just very impressed with their products and especially their support.
