1 out of 5 eggsUPDATE Koutech IO-EEU330 3.5"only Black USB 3.0 External Enclosure w/ One-Touch Backup newegg #N82E16817364027

Pros: none at the present

Cons: After I've rebooted computer with the device attached it exhibited a severe problem--the unit would not be detected by Windows 7 x64 (in this case) after reboot of the computer automatically. You have to manually turn the unit "off" and then turn the unit "on" with the power switch (power cycle it) in order for Windows to detect it again and so it would operate properly. The problem IS repeatable and severe. Sometimes I had to power cycle more than one time for Windows to detect it! I do not think it's only related to my unit--I believe it affects them all. I have dismissed the problems other person experienced with a negative review but now I see that there is more to it than meets the eye. This product was designed without proper testing involved.

Other Thoughts: I have returned my unit--thankfully it was under 30 day guarantee and newegg handled it professionally. I keep my computer on for a long time sometimes--if I haven't rebooted it in time the problem wouldn't have been discovered past the standard return policy period.

1 out of 5 eggsdisconnects

Pros: can't think of any. When the product doesn't work, it's pointless to admire its shiny piano black finish.

Cons: - constantly disconnects, from both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 connections (the drive has been tested on SATA interfaces and is healthy)
- the power and activity lights are on the same panel with USB and power supply connectors. An unusual and inconvenient arrangement.
- flimsy, fragile mounting

Other Thoughts: The enclosure disconnects from the host within minutes after accessing the drive; rebooting the host doesn't help: the enclosure has to be power cycled. To me, it's a non-working product. I got this product back in November - too late to return to Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsKoutech IO-EEU330 3.5"only Black USB 3.0 External Enclosure w/ One-Touch Backup newegg #N82E16817364027

Pros: *Construction and quality and looks are twice the value than what it is currently sold on newegg--I got it for $29 including shipping on the egg site after one egg negative review by somebody. Nobody apparently was buying it so the price dropped $15--my gain..can be yours too if you hurry.
*USB cable is very soft but thick as per USB 3.0 specifications--don't expect thin 3.0 cables for awhile because that's just how it is..the best you can expect is quality and softness.
*Power brick is small and constructed in wise way as far as maximizing space for other power plugs and the power cable is very very long--about 2.5 yards.

***To the guy who left a 1 egg review and decided to keep the enclosure after failures--that is not what you should be doing--newegg stands by what they sell and you are given a guarantee of 30 day of the Standard Return Policy. Ask them to take care of the ship back charge.

Cons: *There are big white letters on the front plastic cover which are not on the picture on the egg site-- CE FC and 'Recycle it' type of symbol of a waste basket crossed over by a white line. This is a surprise because I was expecting perfection like what I saw on the newegg pictures--clean professional looking front end with nothing on it.
*It came in black color instead of gray as per newegg pictures which was another surprise although it is fine with me since my other hard drive enclosures are black too.
*Bottom of the plastic holder does not come with rubber feet but have indentations for them--the whole assembly slides too easily on the glass table surface although it's fine if you place it on tome of something rubberish like what I did when I placed it on the top of Cosmos 1000 computer case (you can lay them flat one over the other too and tie them with rubber bands.)
*Not a con--performance is 110MB/s out 80MB/s in stabilized.

Other Thoughts: *The backup button/software option is useful but not for everyone because it's actually a con whereas it installs a separate Drive Letter (28MB Drive) under Computer in Windows Explorer. The software is also communistic because it forces you to install into one location on your hard drive--you cannot change it at will.
*I am using Seagate Barracuda XT ST32000641AS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" hard drive in this enclosure and it barely gets warm even during intense drive activity. Modern hard drives are cooler and cooler so you save yourself a trouble of noise and eventual breakage of fan when you buy an airtight not meshy enclosure without a fan such as this one and it's very slim too. Soldering inside is excellent made by machine. Power switch is a monster in longevity and USB connector and power connects are super secured to the motherboard.
*Main USB 3.0 chip is by asmedia ASM 1051

1 out of 5 eggsDisconnects (a lot)

Pros: Attractive Aluminum Paperweight :)

Honestly, the case styling/size/weight are nice, it's easy to switch drives, drives are held securely, and it has a hard power switch, which is a big plus. The AC adapter is nice and small compared to some. If the problems below are unique to my unit, then other copies of this model might be pretty good drive cases.

Cons: Disconnects constantly, including during drive use. I tested it with 3 different hard drives, on 2 computers with 3 OSs (Mac 10.6, Ubuntu Maverik. Win 7), using several cables (including the included USB 3 cable). It would always disconnect at least once an hour, and disconnects got more frequent with use. It is now disconnecting every 5 minutes or so and is therefore quite useless. It has damaged a few drive partitions by disconnecting during active writes (the physical drive was OK, but required a reformat).

Other Thoughts: Neither of my machines is USB 3.0 (I bought this case so I could keep using it after a future upgrade). It is possible that the case would work better with a USB 3.0 machine, but it reports USB 2.0 backward compatibility, so I am still annoyed with it. Also, the symptoms sure seem more like overheat, short, or loose connections rather than a problem with the USB protocol (and this case is not USB bus powered). It was cheap, so I'll hang on to it until I can test it on USB 3.0, I guess.
