4 out of 5 eggsNot too shabby

Pros: It works well, it's attractive looking, it came with everything necessary except of course for the disk. It's got an aluminum chassis/hood to help cool things more quickly.

Cons: I was a bit turned off by the way it required me to drive metal screws through a piece of plastic that didn't have a hole yet for the screw. Probably there's a limited number of times a guy could change disks in there before the plastic and/or screws become dysfunctional.

I believe that it does require more power than some of the other comparable items of this time.

Other Thoughts: I can't say for sure, because I've only tried using one HD in it and haven't experimented with other disks, but I think this thing needs both USB plugs to be delivering power more often than other items of this type that I have experience with. I think the others are fine with only the 5 watts (1A) from using just one USB port.

This one often needs more power or it will perform some noisy actions if it's only getting power from one port or plug. Even when it has enough juice, it seems like it might be radiating a little more heat than I'd expect.

Like I said I can't be 100% sure about this judgement, and if I could be then my rating would be less approving.

Anyway, I'm still glad I have it, and I'm happy that I can use the 500 GB disk that I have in it, in it. I have to be conscious about plugs and ports, but it sure does get put to use!

2 out of 5 eggsUSB 3 Only

Pros: Once you figure out how to open the case, it installs very fast.

Cons: I bought this to backup docs on both my Linux and Windows machines. It read fine in Windows, but wasn't recognized by the Linux box. After much weeping and gnashing of teeth, I tried it in my laptop. It works fine in the USB3 port (the blue one), but isn't recognized by the USB2 port. Then the light came on. This product only works with USB 3. If I had known that, I would have bought a different one.

Other Thoughts: To open the case, push down with your thumbs and slide it away from the input port side. Be careful not to jar the enclosure, because it is easily disconnected. I am constantly having to open it and reseat the drive.

3 out of 5 eggsIt Works, But I Won't Recommend

Pros: Like I said, it works and performance is typical. I'm of the belief that if it works it is a minimum 3 stars

Cons: -Screws are really small and easily stripped.
-USB port makes for a very loose connection.
-Included Y cable is odd with power usb being significantly shorter than data usb.
-This one is personal opinion, but I don't like the feel of the unit itself. Plus, my entertainment center has glass shelves and the sound of metal and glass is disturbing.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little enclosure

Pros: Metal construction helps to dissipate heat and feels more solid and durable.

Mounts fine in both Linux and Windows, you can even boot to it easily.

Pretty fast for USB 2.0 (though I didn't run any benchmarks)

Very small form factor

Cons: The little sleeve it came with is quite cheap feeling and I doubt it protects it very well, though it does help out a bit I'm sure.

Special USB cable required (though it wouldn't be hard to create something similar, and any alternatives would have probably been worse, so not deducting an egg)

Other Thoughts: The USB cable it comes with uses either one or two usb ports on your computer/laptop, as it may require more than 500mA of power (the max in the USB spec.). This isn't a problem with the enclosure, but more with the power consumption of mechanical hard drives. If your computer can't power it enough you can always use a wall adapter like the kind used to charge phones.

1 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: ...

Cons: Once hooked up, the light on the device turned on, but my computer recognized the drive for about 10 seconds before not being able to detect it at all. Reconnecting the device, after letting it stay unconnected, resulted in nothing happening.

3 out of 5 eggsRMA replacement works!

Pros: Received replacement enclosure thru the RMA process - the new one worked as the 1st one should have.

Cons: Sabrent needs better quality control.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: compact size, easy to install drives

Cons: Did not work. The light was on & drives spun up, but it was not recognized on any of the 3 PCs - 1 Windows 7 & 2 Windows XP - I tried (with 2 different drives). The error messages was always "USB Device Not Recognized" further stating that the USB device has malfunctioned. With two other (non-Sabrent) enclosures, both drives were accessible with all 3 PCs.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy and Linux friendly

Pros: Works with Linux, which was pretty hard to find for a 2.5 SATA enclosure. Easy to use and does not seem to have a maximum capacity (works on a 500G HDD). Furthermore, price is reasonable. Good stuff!

Cons: Case is a little tricky to close, the guide would benefit from having more indications on that front.

4 out of 5 eggsworks as expected

Pros: works with linux, doesn't need second usb for power, and is an overall decent product

Cons: missing a screw, Which is why its not 5 eggs. Screws have a tight fit, so you have to be careful not to strip them.

1 out of 5 eggsI am sure this is a smart bet for the price

Pros: The price?

Cons: The Unit powered up and down intermittently for 30 seconds and then powered off for good. The enclosure does not work on any of my drives. I would exchange it for a new one if I have that option. Right now I have a piece of broken garbage.
