4 out of 5 eggsWorked with modification

Pros: Slim design, nice adapter for laptop CD/DVD drives sitting around.

Got XP - Win7 64bit to recognized the drive

Fast shipping

Cons: Took one egg because I had to mod the faceplate (a little super glue and an extra little piece of plastic to extend the eject buttons reach to the drive)

Other Thoughts: Acceptable adapter for the price

**Yes this is ONLY an adapter case, CD/DVD drive NOT included

4 out of 5 eggsWorks but finicky

Pros: This is an excellent and inexpensive way to recycle or salvage an optical drive from an old unused laptop.

Cons: - Included cables are shorter than I would have liked.
- It requires a bit of tinkering to install the drive.

Other Thoughts: I don't think I'd recommend this to the general consumer. You need to be a hobbyist and willing to tinker with it to install the drive properly. Having said that, I love that I can reuse old laptop drives that would have been useless otherwise.

One hint: Initially I thought the unit was defective. Windows would recognize the USB device but it wouldn't read disks. But when I connected the data cable first and the power cable second, instead of vice versa, everything worked perfectly. Maybe that was just my drive but if you have similar trouble try it.

2 out of 5 eggsFlimsy, Poor fitting

Pros: If you're handy and gentle, it works

Cons: If you can't be creative with an Xacto knife, it may jam.

Other Thoughts: I had to bevel the edges of the enclosure and the DVD drive face plate to get the drive to not jam when ejecting. I ran the Xacto knife ~90 degrees to the plastic to gradually trim it to fit, shaving curly bits off patiently. For anybody who gets annoyed with having to mess with things to get it to work, this product isn't for you!

The enclosure itself is very soft plastic. That means flimsy. The electronics board inside the enclosure was not aligned properly either.

This enclosure's fragile state makes it so I have zero confidence in being able to toss it in my road warrior bag and have it survive a week's travel and abuse. You need a padded enclosure for the enclosure to make it durable enough for that.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Worked right out of the box. It allowed me use a drive from a dead Compaq laptop. Very easy to assemble. Plugged it in, Windows 7 installed the correct drivers and it works great. Best of all, the faceplate actually worked with this drive with no modifications done to the drive.

Cons: None so far.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Delivery was fast. This was my first purchase with Newegg.

Cons: I bought this for my nephew not realizing it was only the outer shell. I should have investigated it more so if you are looking for an external DVD make sure it is the full unit. This is useless for me and now I need to buy something else. It was to go on a netbook that he travels with. Buyer beware and make sure of what you are buying. My rating might be unfair only because of my disappointment, I didn't see where it said only a case and you need to supply your own internal drive. Does it?

1 out of 5 eggsDid not work

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Cheap

Other Thoughts: Did not work out of the box.

Cheap construction, couldn't get the drive to open because it was getting stuck inside the enclosure.

Pay the extra $10 and get something from a company with quality control.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Simple design, matte rubberized texture.

Cons: Construction quality is *almost* bad, but not quite (so far as I can tell in the couple hours I've tested it). I would say its solidly in the realm of "decent". I will be happy to use it but I will be careful to not treat it so casually that it gets knocked around.

Other Thoughts: Comes with 2 USB cables, one for power one for the data and I guess power if your laptop provides power through USB.

The two laptops I tested were HP 2730p and HP TM2T and both of them worked fine with the single usb (no extra usb required for power). So I am happy.

The drive is secured via two long screws (provided) that go into the rear of the enclosure and through to the internal drive. Seems solid.

I am using an older Pioneer DVD-R unit that has the flush face where the CD enters and gets spat out without any ejecting tray. The front of the drive fits nice and flush with the edge of the enclosure. Very clean look overall.

I tossed out the included faceplate as I won't be needing it... suckers!

2 out of 5 eggsNeeds to bulk up.

Pros: Cheap, simple (plug and play), slim (which leads to...)

Cons: It seems that the engineers err'd on the side of slimness rather than caution in designing these. I tried 3 laptop IDE drives (manufacture dates ranging from 2003 - 2007) and with all of them the fit was so snug that the drive would not eject properly, even if I removed the faceplate.

Other Thoughts: If I remove the top half of the case the product works as expected, hence the two stars. But doing that several times during troubleshooting snapped off one of the clips.

Final thought: I bought this with the intention of saving some money instead of buying an enclosure that comes with a drive. Had I known the enclosure would be this troublesome, I would have spent the extra dough.
