An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.

Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)

That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 500 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution). Could this be your next power supply?

5 out of 5 eggsLasted Close to 6 Years

Pros: My power supply finally died last night. But for close to 6 years, it has been running 24/7 on my main gaming rig. It has seen 3 motherboards, 5 video cards, and 4 processors.

I keep my machine at near 100% processing power trying to find cures for diseases through World Community Grid. The GPUs were all power hungry upper mid range cards. About the only time it wasn't on was durring power failures or bad storms.

Cons: Had to get a SATA cheater. I knew that when I bought it.

Other Thoughts: What I am saying is this power supply has been an absolute work horse. Very reliable, and you can't go wrong getting it.

5 out of 5 eggs5 year review

Pros: This PSU was my first PSU I bought when I built my first PC in 2007, around the time LGA775's were common: C2D E4500, evga 7600GT. It is still going VERY strong after 5 years. The title "basiq" I think reflects it's non-high powered nature. But if you need rock solid reliability, my machine can be proof of that. Ive 'upgraded' to an evga GTS 450 and a q6600 and it still chugs along just fine. Our neighborhood has frequent brown outs (short ones, like lights dim and tv power's off) but this PSU hasn't let my PC restart at all.

Also I have 7 case fans, 2 cpu fans, and I extra fan (all 120mm Cooler Master item #N82E16835103052) in a old CM690 case. Idk if fans drink alot of power juice, but i thought i'd mention that if they do.

Cons: The 80mm fan has gotten noisier over the years. Noisier in terms of hearing the blades spinning. Accumulation of dust probably is the problem though. Also the cords aren't sleeved but it's really no big deal.

Other Thoughts: I should say though that I keep my PC on 24/7. The only occasion where I turn it off is for vacation or when the power goes out. But other then that its on all the time. So again, this thing is rock solid and has not failed me once.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Price
500W

Cons: Cables too short

Other Thoughts: This power supply is okay, but the cables are a little short. They really need 3-4 more inches to allow routing them a little better, especially if you put an optical drive in the top bay.

4 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: I have used several of these power supplies in the past for repair or upgrades. They have been reliable and the modular cords keep the computer case tidy. The large fan does a good job cooling the unit without too much noise.

Cons: This latest unit smoked on power up. Unfortunately, it took out the hard drive in the system too. I am going through a RMA. I see a few other posts on DOA and hopefully this is not a trend with these power supplies.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Psu for older systems

Pros: This psu provides good power for older systems that don't have components that require a lot of power. It's also 80 Plus so it's reliable. Always buy from a trusted psu company and don't go cheap and buy a generic psu that you'll regret later on. It also runs pretty quiet and cool.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: -Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00ghz oc'ed to 3.44ghz @ 1527mhz FSB
-HIS ATI Radeon HD 6670 1gb DDR5 800/1000mhz oc'ed to 900/1150mhz (gpu temp @ 66c on max load)
-Asus P5G41T-M LX Plus mobo 1333mhz FSB oc'ed to 1527mhz FSB
-Kingston HyperX Blu 4gb (2x2gb) DDR3 1600mhz @ 1527mhz (9-9-9-24)
-Crucial 64gb M4 SSD Sata3
-Coolmaster Hyper TX3 (cpu temp @ 56c on max load)
-Antec BP500U ATX 12V 500W PSU
-Rosewill Redbone ATX Mid Tower with 2 120mm fans

4 out of 5 eggsReplacement for Original

Pros: Originally part of a system built in 2003, been working fine until December 8, 2011 or 8 years. Today it began to release the aroma of an over heating capacitor or transformer so shut down and replace.

Cons: For the Antec BP500U it's still 2003, without modular cables, and other current goodies, but that's what needed.

Other Thoughts: Sometimes its good to be able to find parts for an obsolete system that is an exact fit. Still have four newer systems in critical applications so no big deal.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks but died on me

Pros: Looks might be decieving but its a solid psu and does it job as it should until it died.

Cons: After close to two years it died on me. I am disappointed that it did die on me since the system it was in could never truely stress it and less than two years doesn't seem optimal for a psu life.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't be opposed to buying another, but I would definitely give it more thought about spending a bit more on another psu
