An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.
Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)
That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 500 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution). Could this be your next power supply?
Pros: 34A max on the 12v rails, and 80 PLUS certified. Easily powers my e6600 system with an 8800GTS. Built by Se@sonic, a quality manufacturer.
Cons: Lackluster looks, but that's not what you buy a PSU for anyway.
Other Thoughts: After my experience with this unit, I highly recommend these 80 PLUS certified PSUs. I noticed the wattage reading on my killawatt go down by an average of 15% after upgrading from a standard efficiency PSU. Reduced energy usage, reduced heat... can't beat that.

Good basic 80+ PSU
Reviewed By: Dave on 7/25/2007
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: 80+ certified means it's very efficient, generates less heat. Very quiet, but not totally silent.
Cons: As another user pointed out, perhaps some right-angle plugs would be nice. They would've helped in my P180b build.
Other Thoughts: Wish it had modular cabling, but that's what the NeoHE series is for.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Its great for a Micro ATX with still room for Upgrading comes with all the necessities of a modern day gaming Micro ATX and powers it well and most important, efficiently.
AMD Phenom X3 720 HD 4870 4 GB Ram 1600 500GB HDD Sony CD/DVD Burner
Cons: Not really a con but when building a micro ATX with one of those newegg.com's opevia's i think there called. (too lazy to look up the name) it runs a little 'warm' don't freak out its a PSU doing its job and its not your CPU or MB.
Other Thoughts: I'd been thinking about replacing my old, cheap 300-watt PS and when it started making rude noizes (fan bearing going bad), I did my research. I chose this PS because it's Antec, a brand that I really trust, and because of it's 80+% efficiency rating. Also, I went with a 500-watt PS because I believe in over-engineering things...better to have a 500-watt PS running cool @ 50% load than a 300-watt PS running hot @ 80-plus percent load and screaming for mercy. I was *very* impressed with the PS when I opened the box. This thing just screams quality, with a thick, sturdy casing, and lots of heavy-duty cables with lots of heavy plugs. WOOT! I definitely got what I paid for, and then some. It runs so much quieter than the old PS I was using, and much cooler too. I like the 3-year warranty, it speaks volumes to me when a company stands so solidly behind their products like Antec does. I'm sold on Antec!

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Bought this a year ago to replace a mediocre 430W Rosewill, and it's been running for over a year now with no problems.
Currently powering: Athlon X2 4400 (110W) Tyan Tomcat K8E (939 baby!) 512MB 8800GT 2 x Raptor 74GB RAID0 2 x WD 250GB RAID1 1 x DVDRW
Cons: This could be a pro or a con depending on your case. The intake fan is on the back of the unit (facing the front of the case) instead of the bottom as is the newer style. Because it's not as big as a bottom mounted fan, it is a little louder than other PSUs. However, if your case is mounts the PSU on the bottom of the case or is one of these newer dual chamber designs, then the fan position is perfect.
Other Thoughts: Decidedly not sexy. Plain gray, no light up LEDs or black casing. Function over Form...
