5 out of 5 eggsAmazing power supply

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts EA-650 GREEN 650W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: -Has worked flawlessly since April 2011, being used almost everyday for about 8 hours a day.
-Very sturdy construction.
-Handles abuse. My chihuahua peed on it once, don't remember if it was running or not. Dog is fine.
-Laughs at whatever you put in the computer. I have continually upgraded my PC and just recently calculated that, if I use 90% of my components, I pull more than this PSU is rated to handle, yet I have not noticed any problems whatsoever. Regardless I will be working on keeping my components from pulling too much power.
-Stable. I have some wonky electricity in my house sometimes and through power surges, a transformer station blowing up nearby, and all sorts of little problems, this thing has stably supplied power to my computer. Of course, I use a surge suppressor, but the first one broke, yet this thing chugs along like it's made of Adamantium.
-Highly efficient. Whisper quiet. Cool air out the back even after a long gaming session.

Cons: You've got to be joking. I mean I guess the cables are not modular, but I have had zero problems with them in a decent sized case.

Other Thoughts: I think it's safe to say this thing has about gone through hell and back without a flinch. No matter how much power I pull from it it gives, and no matter what happens to it it works.

This is the best power-supply I've ever touched and am very proud of it.

1 out of 5 eggsPlease, do not buy this power supply; for your own safety!

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts EA-650 GREEN 650W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: For the two years it lasted I encountered no problems; it powered my machine wonderfully.
-SEE CONS/OTHER THOUGHTS-

Cons: After getting out of the shower and making some lunch I headed to my room to see my rig blowing out smoke as well as emitting a strong electrical smell. I rushed to shut off the power supply and unhook my surge protector. THANK GOODNESS I caught everything in time, as none of my components were damaged, nor did a fire start. I'm so thankful that this happened AFTER I was out of the shower.

Other Thoughts: Also if you're wondering, my rig is well ventilated. I'm narcissistic about keeping it clean and cool, as well as making sure there's nothing around that could potentially damage it.

I've read some of the reviews below and it seems this has happened to quite a few people.

Please please please do not risk buying this product. I wont ask for a replacement, not that I'd get one. This is a fire hazard, I highly recommend you go with another brand.

1 out of 5 eggsFIRE HAZARD

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts EA-650 GREEN 650W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Well, it ran fine for 18 months.

Cons: Catches on fire.

Other Thoughts: I am incredibly annoyed. I bought this PSU along with all the other parts in my tower at the same time from Lu Computers so they could put it together for me. I am livid, and lucky that when massive amounts of smoke came billowing out of my machine I was not only awake and at home by right by the machine to shut it off. I plan on calling Antec soon as this is still well within the 2 year warranty. If you bought this item, SEND IT BACK. Lest your house catch on fire from this fire hazard of a PSU.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good for the price

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts EA-650 GREEN 650W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: The power supply is built like a rock. When I received it and picked the package up was surprised by the weight of this thing. It weighs atleast twice as my much as my last unit.

- The power supply offers a great amount of connectors for many different hardware configurations. For me, I just connected the dual 12v rails to the 8 pin auxiliary power connector behind the CPU cooler. My old Antec Power Trio 650w unit had a single 8 pin cable, rather then dual 4 pin cables. But I decided it was time for an update after about 5-6 years of heavy use.

- The power supply's 120mm fan is also extremely quiet. If it wasn't for my case fans making my PC scream I couldn't tell if the system was running or not.

- Supports older ATX motherboards as well as new ones providing a 20/24 pin primary ATX connector following the dual 12v rails.

- The unit powers my rig out of the box, no voltage problems(Yet..)

AMD Athlon II x4 640 Propus AM3+ 95w processor
Gigabyte 970A-UD3p AM3+ Motherboard
8 Gigabytes of Kingston DDR3-1333 Memory
4 Hard drives(Including one 320 gigabyte laptop drive)
An ATI Radeon HD 6450 1G DDR3 PCI-E(For multitasking) with a primary EVGA 550ti 1G PCI-E 2.0 x16(Running 3 displays total). The 6400 is a media centre low profile and low powered card.
Three 120mm case fans and the CPU stock cooler

- The unit is sort of a very dark green rather then a light green

- Comes with a power cable, case screws, and some very nice cable ties(Already attached to the unit out of box); everything needed. Of course if you're upgrading then you don't really need to use these. I did because the screws matched my case color.

- Cables are very nice and long; They provide properly arranged Sata connectors that don't need to be flipped around that mangle up the case wiring.

Cons: - Not all the cables are sleeved other then the primary ATX cable.
- PSU does not provide connectors to control the PSU fan from the motherboard(Not really a con, but something I find useful)

Other Thoughts: Other then that this unit is built quite well. Goes in, starts up out of box, without any problems so far.

I would recommend this unit to someone who needs a new PSU for their hardware, but I would not suggest it to a heavy gamer.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked great, then started smoking

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts EA-650 GREEN 650W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: It worked for year, and never had issues during that time. I've used Antec Earthwatts series before with no problems and I expected the same here, and mostly got it...

Cons: ...until I noticed a burning smell coming from my computer. I didn't have a backup PSU to test with, but when the system was on the burning smell got strong -- this side of my house could smell it. I would shut it off, and the smell would fade away. Pulled everything else out to eliminate source of the burning smell until I noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the PSU one day.

Didn't use my PC for a week until I bought a new PSU and voila, the burning never came back.

So yea, burning power supplies, that's a nice fire hazard. I noticed multiple reviews about this one having this same thing happen around a year of use, so be warned.

1 out of 5 eggsBlew Out After 35 Days!

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts EA-650 GREEN 650W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: It worked... until it just stopped.

Cons: -The thing stopped working 30 days into having it.
-All cords are pre-attached which makes things messer than they need to be. Also makes cord replacement impossible.

Other Thoughts: I've only had the thing for 30 days, but because its warrenty is on the invoice date that means it's 4 days to late to replace. I might as well have thrown my money down a pit.

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize the EA-650 Green died on you, we'll gladly replace it with a new one. 1 out of 5 eggsFIRE HAZARD!!!!

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts EA-650 GREEN 650W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: The power supply worked great for about two years, but then started smoking.

Cons: Basically this power supply had great reviews and good efficiency. I used to recommend it to a lot of people, but many people have been having issues with it dying and smoking. It is a big fire hazard. Many are having this issue after two years of use or more. STAY AWAY. I used to rate this product highly, but I would much rather pay extra and get something of higher quality, preferably made by seasonic like the older Corsair PSUs or the XFX power supplies.

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for the defective PSU, we'll gladly replace it with a new one. As for the fire issue that you had, we would like to speak to you directly and address this matter. Please contact our customer support at 1-800-222-6832 Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm Pacific Standard Time or online at http://support.antec.com/support/home
