3 out of 5 eggsNot a lot of power

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts Platinum Series EA-550 Platinum 550W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Power supply is extremely efficient

Reduced power consumption by 15w (compared to a non platinum rated antec power supply)

Cons: can not power any high end graphics card

Other Thoughts: I originally bought this power supply for my new haswell build. However my GTX 570 was to much for this to handle. I ended up swapping power supplies with my servers antec 750w.

It all worked out in the end. It made more sense to have the efficient power supply in the server anyway, because it is on 24/7.

According to my APC my new build is only pulling 260w at max while playing Battlefield 3 on ultra. Must be the 12v rail on this PSU is just not hefty enough to handle the load.

5 out of 5 eggsI didn't even know there was a Platinum level

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts Platinum Series EA-550 Platinum 550W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Until I went to look for this purchase I didn't realize there was a platinum level, so for the price I was impressed.

Cons: I didn't notice it has a 24 pin motherboard connector and not a 20/24pin connector. It does not break apart to accommodate a 20 pin motherboard. The product specifies that, but it's such a small detail I didn't even think to look. I had to get an adapter to make it work in my case.

Other Thoughts: This is the first power supply unit I've purchased in many years that was not PC Power and Cooling. So far it seems to be a decent power supply. I admit the platinum rating is what swayed my decision to purchase this one over teh others in this price range.

4 out of 5 eggsIt took a while, but I'm finally quite pleased

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts Platinum Series EA-550 Platinum 550W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: I love the sleeved rails; they keep the interior of my case looking tidy and simple. It's quiet, though not silent. Yeah, the fan only whispers a bit. It runs so very cool, which is what you'd expect from a platinum-rated PSU. Finally, anybody considering purchase of this PSU is because it's highly efficient at converting electricity into computer power. This PSU definitely generates very low heat compared to the wattage of your system. If you own this PSU, you're using electricity efficiently.

Cons: It's not modular. If you have a lots of powering needs for lots of connectors, you're stuck with an entire rail of Molex connectors that nobody needs anymore. I mean, a Molex is so turn-of-the-millennium! Of course, I knew that it wasn't modular; I bought it because it is power-efficient.
I deduct one egg because my first power supply was DOA and I had to RMA the brand-new dead PSU. Boo, hiss! My wife started nagging me, complaining about how long it took to get my computer running. She insisted that I should have just gone to a brick-and-mortar computer store in the first place instead of risking an RMA! When an English teacher legitimately whines at a computer professional over his vendor choices, that's annoying.

Other Thoughts: You buy this PSU for the sake of efficient energy use. Consider the price and judge whether you need to spend extra money on enhancements like modular connectors or higher wattage. I'm not a gamer, but I want flexibility... so this PSU is the right size for me and I'm quite happy with it.
I love Antec equipment (in spite of this QA bug listed in "Cons"), but I really hated it when my wife nagged me all week long during the RMA process with NewEgg. I vote that my wife's nagging was the fault of NewEgg's RMA process, not Antec's QA problem.
Antec's QA problem wasn't the vendor's fault, but the RMA process is an ongoing NewEgg problem. Let's face it, a new PSU that arrives DOA is a simple fact-of-life in the computer industry. An RMA process that lasts a week-and-a-half is an annoying, fixable problem. My challenge to NewEgg: "Can you identify creditworthy NewEgg accounts that are eligible for a new, upscale, abbreviated, Platinum RMA process?"

4 out of 5 eggsIt could be better

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts Platinum Series EA-550 Platinum 550W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Well build and appears to be power efficient but see cons…

Cons: It’s not loud but not as quiet as I expected. I could easily make psu’s fan the loudest thing in my PC (no gpu and minimal load) by turning 2 case and 1 cpu 120 fans to their lowest, and these my 3 fans aren’t from hi-end ultra-quiet line of products.

Time between you turn psu switch to 1 and the moment you can actually run your PC is longer than usual and frustrating (of course it’s only matters when you build or upgrade PC, but it’s one of these “little things”).

Other Thoughts: It could be cheaper

5 out of 5 eggsNeat and quiet

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts Platinum Series EA-550 Platinum 550W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Very quiet. Not totally silent, but close enough for me! Seems to have provided good power so far. Cables with braided sheathing are always neat. More connectors than I imagine I'll ever need... but it's good to have the options, and I have space in the system chassis to stash the excess.

Cons: The biggest problem I've had with this power supply (really) is that the adhesive on the Antec label on the side of the PSU is insufficient and it gradually peels off by itself... With only integer egg ratings available, I cannot take away the 0.001 of an egg that this flaw would cost.

Other Thoughts: One of my build goals was low power, so this purchase was intended to achieve reliable, efficient and quiet power (not caring so much about the 550 watt aspect), and it seems to have ticked all the boxes.

I would imagine it might make more noise if in a beefier system where it needed to ramp the fan up, but it is a large fan so it should be relatively quiet then too. Large PSU fan = good.

5 out of 5 eggsGreen Mean Machine

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts Platinum Series EA-550 Platinum 550W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Cut my energy bill by 25%!! Antec is synamous with reliability. Have been using their power supplies for more than I can remember, 10+ years? None of them which ever failed on me yet, knock on wood. Efficiency is a plus! paired with the Antec lable, you can't go wrong. This PSU is also very quiet, one fan only (intake). 550watts is plenty of juice, now that most technologies are getting more efficient overall.

Cons: Price is over one benjamin. Oh well, The cost of a new power supply is worth it though. Pays for itself, As over time, efficiency dwindles, even if it still works.

Other Thoughts: Replaced a working PSU, don't fix what's not broken, REPLACE IT! :)

come on, we live in a wasteful society, that it cost less to buy a new printer than to buy ink for it.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet, Well Built, Efficient

This review is from: Antec EarthWatts Platinum Series EA-550 Platinum 550W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Its quiet, reliable and runs cool! Its very energy efficient so it won't put off a lot of heat, I had issues with this on my old PSU it would heat up my room like a space heater... Cables are nice and long and there are plenty of connectors...

Cons: Not modular but I knew that when i bought it, believe it or not these cables are easy to run and my case looks great so I don't consider this a con but some may. Otherwise i wish it had a 5 year warranty over the 3 year but for the price i can't complain much, i may buy an extended warranty for it.

Other Thoughts: I ended up paying $93 for this and there will be a $15 rebate coming soon so at $78 for a platinum 550w PSU you can't go wrong.
