4 out of 5 eggsGood 500w PSU

This review is from: Antec HCG M Series HCG-520M 520W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: I purchased this PSU because there's not a lot kf 500w PSUs that are semi-modular. It's powering my i7-4770, an Asus Gtx 970 strix, 2x Samsung 850 Evo, 2x Wd Black and 1x wd green without any problems! It's not fully modular but this is perfect because who doesn't need the 24 pins...

Cons: Having 2x(6+2) pci connector isn't a problem because this PSU isn't for Sli or Crossfire but I would replace 1 molex cable by a Sata power cable because Having only 5 sata connectors isn't enough today for me. (I need to use a splitter...) The Pci power connector that plugs in the psu isn't a regular connector like Corsair so having CableMod cables won't fit here it will be a extension.

1 out of 5 eggsQuestionable QC

This review is from: Antec HCG M Series HCG-520M 520W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Runs very quiet, modular cables are the best I've seen, i.e. plugs into the power supply easily, but securely, spacing of connectors worked well for me in mid-atx case, sleeved cables are pliable enough to make routing easy, power connecters also snap in easily but securely. The first one I got was defective, but the one that I exchanged it for (exact same model) seems to be okay. It has been running well for three days now. Admittedly, that is a very short time, but it's quite an improvement over the first one! I have had good luck with Antec in the past, this being the first problem I've had with them.

Cons: The first unit I bought was defective. It passed testing with a budget tester made specifically for PSU's that I always use before installing these things. However, after installation (Asus M4A78 Plus with Phenom II 970 CPU, EVGA 750TI, two optical drives, one Samsung Evo 250GB SSD - so no real serious loading to speak of), it would only run for about five or so minutes and shut down. Immediate restart would only flash the lights and shut down again right away. I tried it in another machine (ASRock H97M Pro4 with i3-4170, no graphics card, one Samsung Evo 250GB SSD, one WD 1TB Black HDD, one LG CD/DVD RW - even less load) and the same thing happened. It ran perfect for less than ten minutes before shutting down, and immediate restart caused immediate shut down. After leaving it for a few hours, it started up and ran good for the usual few minutes, then shut down.

Other Thoughts: I bought this at a local store, as I am paranoid about purchasing power supplies online. It doesn't seem to matter whose name is on a power supply anymore, the failure rate on these things is unacceptably high. The only 'budget' brand PSU I ever purchased turned out to have a very long life - still running after eight years! Contrarily, I've had a few less than satisfactory experiences with several 'top' brands that charge premium prices. That is particularly frustrating, because one expects to have smooth sailing after paying an exorbitant price for supposed quality and dependability! Return shipping, and the inconvenience of downtime, figure heavily in my decision on where to purchase a particular item.

5 out of 5 eggsConsistent solid power supply

This review is from: Antec HCG M Series HCG-520M 520W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Great power supply for everyday use. No interruptions or glitches as I have installed PS for past month. Enough power to handle most tasks. If you are a gamer then you might need the higher wattage.

Cons: Could use more power cables for more connections

Other Thoughts: I got this PS to upgrade a lower 400W PS I that had for past 5yrs. I'm very satisfied with the power handling of this PS.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems Since Purchase

This review is from: Antec HCG M Series HCG-520M 520W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Works just as I expected.

Cons: None, really.

Other Thoughts: I'll just give a preface before I say anything. I'm not a techie by any means but I'm trying to get into it a little. Over the Summer I wanted to build my first PC to run a few games and I ended up choosing this one from a few recommendations.

My current build is this, if it matters to any of you.
CPU: Intel i5-4460 Quad-Core Processor
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H Micro ATX LGA1150
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
GPU: AMD Sapphire Radeon R9 270 2GB
Case: Rosewill Galaxy-02 ATX Mid Tower
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 520W
Monitor: ViewSonic VX2263SMHL-W 76Hz 21.5"
OS: Windows 10 (Upgraded from Windows 8.1)

So far, I haven't had any problems. It's been 3 months since I bought it and installed it and it has worked like a charm since. Not much to say about it from a newbie's perspective other than it works with the build I have. I'm not overclocking my PC nor am I doing any other extra mods. It's easy to install if you have a standard placement for parts in your PC.

1 out of 5 eggsPower Supply not reliable

This review is from: Antec HCG M Series HCG-520M 520W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Worked like a charm when I did have it working.

Cons: Only lasted 3 days after I got it in the mail.

Other Thoughts: I don't know if I can get a refund now but I'd like a better power supply if possible, I was really happy to have made my own gaming pc but apparently picking the power supply or brand rather was a mistake, I should of put more money towards a power supply since at the time this costed 50$ which seemed really low, something told me to buy a stronger one but I feel stupid for not listening.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Jonathan,

If you do still have this defective power supply and not able to get a refund from Newegg.

We can definitely RMA this for you and send you a new one.

We apologize for the defective unit, this happens every now and then.

5 out of 5 eggsLooks like a well-made, high quality power supply

This review is from: Antec HCG M Series HCG-520M 520W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Nice, heavy and very quiet power supply. Bought it to replace my current power supply because it was no longer powerful enough to power my system after an upgrade. Due to its heavy weight, it looks like Antec uses very high quality components for this HCG series of power supplies. Just installed it a few hours ago, and it's humming along pretty well.

The specs indicate that this power supply is supposed to run up to 100,000 hours, which I have obviously yet to see, but it's very promising because my computer is on around the clock. The 87% efficiency rate will also be very helpful and will hopefully let me save money considering my use scenario.

The modular cable system is a very good idea because you don't have too many useless cables cluttering up the space inside the case and the air flow is much better. This is also usually a sign of a higher-end quality power supplies.

Being an IT professional, I've built hundreds of computers with different power supplies over the years. I can definitely say to this power supply looks like one of the most impressive I had experience with. Overall, very satisfied with the purchase.

Cons: None noticed so far.

5 out of 5 eggsA 500Watt that can do it all

This review is from: Antec HCG M Series HCG-520M 520W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Surprised to find a 520watt that did SLI and well, to top it off it is Bronze certified, very nice. Dont get fooled though, it only have 2 PCIE connections, 2 x 8PIN or really 2 x 6+2PIN. runs my 980 like a dream

Cons: Its not 100% modular

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I need

This review is from: Antec HCG M Series HCG-520M 520W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Got this PSU on sale and couldnt pass up the great deal with the modular design and 520 watts of power. Was only for around 400w but when i saw this and having an antec case I couldnt say no. the fan on this is truly silent I cant hear it at all especially over my case fans. the wires are all in netted plastic making these cables very resiliant to tears snags and cuts. This is just what I needed and if you can get it on sale dont pass it up

Cons: Only have one but not enough of a con to drop an egg, All the wires that come to add all have at least two connections on it like pcie power has two (6+2) power connectors on it would be nice to have just one on two cables or an attachment that could go on the end to add another connector, also with the sata power I only need one more connector to power my dvd burner but now need to pull out the cable that has three sata connections on it just to power on drive. this just kills my OCD but other than that it is just a mild annoyance more than anything.

4 out of 5 eggsAntec 520M!

This review is from: Antec HCG M Series HCG-520M 520W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Quite, Great quality!

Cons: SLI cable impossible for smart cable management.

Other Thoughts: This is a great power supply. It looks good in my case and you can't hear it even under gaming use. My only issue is for people not using SLI configs, you have 2-ends 6+2 to the GPU power cables that get in the way if you are trying to do any kind of cable management. So for that I gave this PSU 4 eggs only...
