1 out of 5 eggsHigh failure rate

This review is from: Antec HCP-850 Platinum 850W ATX12V / EPS12V Yes Yes 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: 850 watts power

Cons: We make high end computers for high end customers and bought about 30 of these for use with our best computers that were being made for our most important customers. About 6 of them have failed in less than a year and it has hurt our relationship with these customers who expected better from us. One customer had two in a row fail in 8 months.

2 out of 5 eggsQA Problems?

This review is from: Antec HCP-850 Platinum 850W ATX12V / EPS12V Yes Yes 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Antec support department is reliable and honors the warranty.
Works fine if you get a non defective unit.

Cons: I've had 3 of these now. I originally had a hcp-750 (gold) that was shutting off during gaming, then replaced by a hcp-850 (platinum) that randomly died on me. These power supplies seem to have long term reliability problems under normal usage.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't recommend buying one of these after wasting countless hours trying to troubleshoot my computer. Maybe they have improved the qa since my problems, but you are gambling with hours of your time if you get a bad unit.

This review is from: Antec HCP-850 Platinum 850W ATX12V / EPS12V Yes Yes 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Stable voltages

Cons: the fan sound is unbearable.

Other Thoughts: the fan has problems.. Delta doesn't seem to make fans Quite as on par with Corsair or Seasonic which also manufactures them OEM, Seasonic actually importing their own fans.

This review is from: Antec HCP-850 Platinum 850W ATX12V / EPS12V Yes Yes 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Stable voltages, good system performance

Cons: fan could be quieter

Other Thoughts: I've updated my review from the previous. the power supply makes the flaws in your music much more noticeable, and makes good music clearer, but doesn't introduce increased distortion. the background noise is an inherent issue with All PC-based setups, unless you have like the new X-Fi that has a daughter board.

It's about not how quiet the fan is. - not the dB it can be as loud as you want and you wouldn't care, but there's a certain rubbing sound that no matter how quiet the fan is, is present.

I've owned several HCP Series and they have the fan sound - sounds like plastic rubbing, it can get really noticeable when there is no ambient noise in the room. If you want a really quiet setup you may want to go with Sanyo-Denki-supplied fans instead.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Antec HCP-850 Platinum 850W ATX12V / EPS12V Yes Yes 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Stable voltages that don't move, good system performance, excellent Cable organization.

Cons: doesn't work well with high-end audio, may work well for gaming applications if one is interested in a more dynamic sound, more range flexibility, and more bass.

Other Thoughts: using On a Sb X-Fi Elite Pro.. wonderful power supply, stable voltages (At least when the temperatures are low, haven't hot tested), and more than likely gives better frames and better performance when running most games.

it actually sounds better, the sound is perceived as better - more dynamic, louder as well as on normal listening volumes, but if there's no sound coming from the speakers, and you turn up the volume knob on your AV receiver to the Max, you can actually hear that the new power supply introduces an extreme amount of distortion and noise - it's not even like a small noticeable difference.

it's not the grounding, cables, or the power conditioner, because those haven't changed, and it's not setup-specific - it's likely the specific way the power supply was designed, the voltage it provides to a 4-pin floppy cable, but if you like louder, dynamic sound with good detail compared to a reference power supply (e.g. the previous one), by all means.

the problem with high-current power supplies is that they supply higher voltages to your components and may cause unintended consequences to sensitive components such as sound cards. I really liked the power supply and it was a shame to see it go. I haven't tested the Corsair AX Series, but I'll switch back to an Antec TruePower and see how it goes.

the other problem is that Delta doesn't manfacture the same type of fans as Sanyo Denki, and if you have any experience with the HCP Series, which I own a few .. the fans aren't as good in my thoughts even though they are made to Top spec.

Go for Antec's TruePower Gold or Classic series if you're running components like Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro or Asus Essence STX, if all you care about it sound quality, there's going to be a tradeoff in performance vs. the sound one wants to achieve. Good luck with choosing your components.

Pros: The oc Link is terrific. The braided cables are great looking. Mounts easy. The connection with the Antec HCP-1300 Platinum 1300W was easy and performance great

Cons: OC cable should be longer I put it in a Black Hawk Ultra and I just got it to fit

Other Thoughts: Red and Black are my Rigs colouring the yellow on the supply mixes in nice

2 out of 5 eggsAll my Antec PSUs have died.

This review is from: Antec HCP-850 Platinum 850W ATX12V / EPS12V Yes Yes 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Intel Haswell Fully Compatible

Pros: Worked fine for a while, but was a replacement.

Cons: Died after a year of normal use, with a build that required maybe half the wattage.

Other Thoughts: I put together a few years ago that required about 400w total, maybe a bit less. Originally I had the Antec TPQ-850 because it came with a good combo deal on the case I wanted. It blew out on me after about a year and a half of moderate use, no discernible reason. Antec replaced it with the same part because it was under warranty, but I had to wait a while for the RMA.

Last year, the same thing happened. Again, no reason. No power surges or new parts or shorts, just didn't turn on one morning. It was still under warranty, so I replaced it a second time, which also took them a while to ship to me. This time they sent me the HCP-850 because they no longer had the old model.

My 6-year old mobo then finally decided it had enough and quit on me, so I replaced it. Just built a new system, which I've been doing for years and never had an issue. Went to power it on, and...nothing at all. No fans spinning, no LEDs, not even the paper clip test worked. This one's just over a year old, but since the warranty only extends to my original one, Antec won't replace it this time.

This is my THIRD Antec PSU to blow out in 4 years. I will not be buying a fourth! Antec makes good cases, but as for PSUs I'll never buy another from them.
