4 out of 5 eggsGreatest Enclosure I've had yet

Pros: The Virtual Optical Disk feature is the most useful tool. Loaded up all of my ISO's and booted them with no problem. Has a backup feature, that I will never use, but is there. Had a different USB cable than in the pictures however I also did not have the random disconnections that the other reviews spoke of.

Cons: Documentation is limited. Doesn't inform you of a lot of the fine details to get it to work properly. Your HDD must be formatted in NTFS or FAT32 (In Windows) and you have to create the "_ISO" folder and dump all of your ISO's into this folder. After this it worked no problem.

Other Thoughts: I feel the top LCD screen portion of the enclosure is a little cheaply made, however, once installed with an HDD inside, it feels just fine.

4 out of 5 eggsNeat

Pros: The virtualization feature that will mount an ISO as a second ODD is awesome.

Cons: You most likely *will* need access to a Windows machine to get the virtualization working. Though I had reformatted my drive to NTFS and added _ISO to the clean filesystem under Linux, mounting ISOs via the jog menu continually produced "DEFRAG" on the display until I moved the drive to a Windows machine and defragged it. I tried ntfsfix under Linux first, but it did not change the symptoms.

Other Thoughts: If you get a "1st Partition: EE" error on your display, either your 1st partition isn't NTFS, doesn't start at the beginning of the drive, or you are not using a plain msdos partition table. I got this error because my drive was originally set up with a GPT partition table.

If this drive had firmware that supported EXT filesystems, it would be just about perfect.

3 out of 5 eggsNo need for 4 USB drives anymore.

Pros: Does what it advertises. Comes with nice things (pouch, screws)
Works best with SSD so that USB 3 comes in useful. USB 2 adapters can work as well.

Cons: Really cheap design around the top where all the work happening (plug and switch). It is very fragile and feels cheap. Solder joints were solid but if you leave the USB 3 cable in the device while transporting you will break the cable or the plug joints.
Doesn't work with all hard drives.

Other Thoughts: I attached a Samsung HM160HI 160gig drive to it and it worked for about 5 minutes then would loop between failing and connecting to different PCs I tested.

I thought it was just a defective unit and stopped using it for 4 months. Later my friend tried to use it with his SSD drive... BOOM! no more problems. May be a power issue or maybe the enclosure doesn't plug and play with all drives. Either way, it works fine now.

5 out of 5 eggsResolved the 1st Partition: EE error and works great

Pros: Removes necessity to burn CDs/DVDs ISO images

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you have a "1st Partition: EE" onscreen and cannot access your ISO folder, to resolve the issue:

Go to Administration --> Computer Management --> Disk Management and delete the volume, then right click on the Disk and select the Convert to MBR option. Then create a new volume and format it (I also updated the firmware so format the drive according to which firmware (either NTFS or FAT) you used.

The issue then disappeared and drive functioned beautifully.

4 out of 5 eggsNever found a better alternative

Pros: #1 reason to get this is the Virtual CD emulation. Add an *.iso file to the _ISO folder on the hard driver and it can be selected and mounted as a USB CD drive. Depending on the device you are connecting to, you may have to switch it to CD emulation only mode to be recognized--or alternatively Disk only. Most devices will work in the default Dual mode where this device appears to be both an external hard drive and CD drive.
USB 3 transfer rates are excellent, and the device will show whether it is connected USB 3 or USB 2. It's amazing how many USB 3 laptop ports almost never connect as USB 3.... This device at least let's you know why the transfers are slower than expected--or to disconnect and reconnect on a different USB 3 port.

Cons: As mentioned in other reviews, the USB connection is extremely sensitive and prone to failure.

Other Thoughts: I've bought two of these. The first one failed after a year because of the buggy USB connector. The second I am being extremely careful with--I use the USB CD emulation almost daily for my work and found myself extremely frustrated after the first one failed. It is very nice to be able to test the ISO files I create before wasting the time burning media.
If you're just looking for an external USB 3-Laptop SATA hard drive enclosure, keep on looking. If you think that you might make use of the virtual CD-ROM, get this device.
If they fixed the USB connection, this would be a definite 5 egg device.

2 out of 5 eggsBuggy

Pros: Great concept
Fast

Cons: USB cable very sensitive and prone to disconnecting
Firmware is buggy, despite many upgrades.
"Dead spot" on hard disk where programs go crazy, constantly trying to write with no result.
Problems getting BIOS to boot from ISOs (partly fixed by upgrades

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome enclosure

Pros: Works great, does exactly what I want. Installs windows

Cons: The UI is a bit clunky, especially on reboot...

Also, the app for it isn't exactly intuitive

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: I have this one and the newer USB3 model. They're reliable, useful, awesome, durable.

On screen temperature display is useful. This drive keeps the disks cool.

Cons: virtual mounting feature is (I've read) NTFS only.

Only SATA II

eSATA doesn't take advantage of the powered eSATA port, so when you use eSATA, USB must also be plugged in for power.

Other Thoughts: Somehow eSATA doesn't seem to be reliable... every once and a while I'll get a corrupted ISO and it only happens when I've used eSATA, but when I go to test copying and verify with MD5, it comes out fine... but I've spend hours wondering why the windows installer gives some vague error, when it turns out the ISO itself was quietly corrupted. Maybe my device is intermittently buggy, maybe my computer's eSATA port isn't that great (I have no other eSATA devices). Get in the habit of making MD5 files, and think of this before you spend hours of your life trouble shooting in the wrong direction.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat concept

Pros: Great idea and really needed, but

Cons: The darn usb cable doesn't connect very well and if you jiggle it the least bit, it drops the connection. This is the second one I have had. The first one I replaced for the same reason after a month. Very poorly made connection.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 2nd day.

Pros: ISO Emulator

Cons: Stuck on ZM-VE300 screen.

I bought two of these, and one stopped working after two days. I tested with another cable, works fine. The cable for my second drive is starting to act up too. I have to hold it so that it faces north, but not too close to true north. If that doesn't work, I have to add pressure to it as if I am trying to stop a goat from bleeding out from a COD sniper wound.

Other Thoughts: We all hate the RMA process. Shipping costs, shipping hassles, the time spent waiting to utilize something you already paid for, and countless inconveniences.
