5 out of 5 eggsGreat enclosure

Pros: Durable and good quality of parts

Sturdy, you can put stuff on top of it

Cons: A little noisy (depend on hard drive you put in it, but doesn't do much to dampen the noise)

The feet/screws on the bottom can scratch wooden surfaces, so you'll have to use felt or something to protect your desk or computer top

Other Thoughts: Good, sturdy enclosure at a good price

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job!!!

Pros: It allows me to swap in and out hard drives to work on and get viruses off.

Cons: It can't play the guitar?

Other Thoughts: I already own one of these and I decided to buy a second one so I am able to do twice the work at one time. I may end up ordering another one.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked for my IDE drive

Cons: Didnt work for my SATA II drive

Other Thoughts: No good for SATA II. When i put my WD 1TB SATA II drive in, it prompts me to format it. I am disappoint.

4 out of 5 eggsA standard external enclosure

Pros: I purchased this enclosure to install an old Samsung 400 GB IDE hard drive into. Installed without a hitch and had it up and running in a few minutes. The unit is decently constructed. You will need to tighten up the screws from time to time as the vibration from the HDD will slowly loosen them.

Cons: This enclosure's board/controller finally died on me after about a year and 10 months of being used for a backup device. I would have imagined I would have gotten a little more time out of it.

1 out of 5 eggsUsed to be a good product...Junk now, look elsewhere

Pros: Cheap. Revision to original eliminates power brick in favor of a wall-wart

Cons: Does not recognize previously formatted/partitioned drive. There is NO reason why i should have to reformat/re-copy 2tb worth of data simply because i swapped out an external enclosure for one of the exact same model. Also, the wall-wart is rated less then the old power brick (Original was 2 rails @ 2000ma each, new one is 2000ma total) which means that 24/7 operation (like my original) will have reliability issues. Also, the internal connections are FAR more cheaply made and are of a reliability concern

Other Thoughts: I used to be one of the biggest supporters of masscool for this exact enclosure. I purchased a spare on the good faith that it was made to the same excellent high standards of the original. I was sadly mistaken.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap but cheap

Pros: - USB 2.0 external connection
- SATA or PATA internal connection
- Metal / Aluminum enclosure
- Thumb screws (12 of them!)

Cons: - Flimsy construction

Other Thoughts: I read the reviews before buying this so I knew what I was getting myself into. I needed 2 "cheap" enclosures. Boy did I get what I paid for! It is indeed quick and easy to get a drive in or out of the enclosure. I do like the PATA or SATA connection choice. Even though the enclosure top/bottom are metal / aluminum, it feels flimsy. The long sides will bend inward if you grab it from the sides. It is just plain wierd. It works for me and I don't plan on constantly removing drives or moving the enclosure. I think I will put some rubber feet on it tho.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes Exactly What I Bought It For ...

Pros: I bought this mainly because of its SATA + IDE versatility - it makes a great test/setup case for virtually any 3.5" HDD, and thats the main value it brings to the table and delivers on. Getting drives in and out is simply a matter of 4 top thumbscrews, then 2-4 HDD mount thumbscrews.

It has worked flawlessly for the 1.5+ years I have owned it. It has probably seen about 30 different HDDs in it and all have worked just fine unless the HDD already had its own issues.

Cons: I probably would knock down to 4 eggs if rating on its value as a permanent USB case for a single HDD, only because there are better ones out there that purpose.
- Yes, there is virtually no noise insulation, but I dont believe that was so much a design consideration
- Yes, the side panels liked to slide out when disassembled. It took me a few seconds and 4 small dabs of hot glue that small annoyance go away.
