5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive case

Pros: Dissipates heat well, powers e-sata with usb or dc current, as fast as far more expensive drives.

Cons: The e-sata cable it comes with is horrible

4 out of 5 eggsNice little external enclosure

Pros: Ran with a SSD (Gskill Phoenix FM-25S2S-120GB) and it had the performance I expected (topping at around 250MB/sec Write and 270MB/sec read).

Comes with all the accessories you need: USB, eSata, and USB Power plug.

Cons: Screws on the interface to slide out and put the drive in are really tiny! Way too small and easy to lose!

Other Thoughts: Sure likes to get fingerprints on it...

1 out of 5 eggsWorked on USB but not eSata

Pros: Looked good
Seemed like it was well put together
Worked fine for USB

Cons: eSata would not work because it didn't come with a correct USB power cable. I tried the one that came with the unit. I also tried working with the manufacturer and they sent me a power cable. It still wouldn't work.

Note: This also did not come with the sata/e-sata bracket that was in the picture.

Other Thoughts: Buy something else until they get the power cable issue worked out.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly

Pros: Simple, cheap eSata/USB solution.
Works with my JMB360-based eSata Expresscard34 and MacBook Pro (3,1) with Leopard and my Hackintosh Dell Optiplex 760 in XP and Snow Leopard.

Cons: USB power cable is nice, but I'd also like to see an option including a small "wall wart" power adapter.

Other Thoughts: I had problems with this and the enclosure shipped with my Kingston SSDNow unit playing nicely with my Western Digital WD3200BEVT. This drive worked fine inside my MacBook Pro and a 3.5" wall-powered USB enclosure. A Hitachi 120GB drive worked perfectly in this and the Kingston enclosure. I researched this on Western Digital's website and found that there is a setting for spinning the drive up under lower power (RPS, Reduced Power Spinup). I set this using a micro-jumper and everything works perfectly. If your drive has this option (and I'm guessing that most do), strongly recommend trying it if you have any issues.

2 out of 5 eggsNot worth it

Pros: Inexpensive. Compact. USB and eSATA. Includes eSATA bracket and double-USB-port cable.

Cons: Doesn't work with all PC/drive combinations. Power jack is weird polarity and won't work with included power cable.

Other Thoughts: I had the same problem as another reviewer where the power jack is the wrong polarity for the included cable. The jack is strange (positive collar, negative pin). I thought I'd rewire it, but the pc-mount jack has a lot of solder points.

Also, it wouldn't spin up attached to some computers even with both USB cords attached, and I think it was my choice of 2.5" drive causing that. I got another enclosure elsewhere with standard polarity, and use a USB hub power supply when the thing needs more power. Bus powered does not live up to the hype.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks ... Eventually

Pros: Its simple to assemble,, works and handles being dropped once or twice.

Cons: Its USB2.0 Interface is extremely slow. I haven't tried the Esata interface, but with 2 different drives the transfer to/from the drive is slower then transferring over the Wifi (802.11G) to another machine.

Other Thoughts: Perhaps this is a function of having both Esata and Usb2.0 but this is by far the slowest USB to sata adapter I have ever used.

1 out of 5 eggsWrong USB Power Cables - BEWARE

Pros: Nice design. Easy to install the drive. Supports 320GB 7200 RPM drive. eSATA fast (60 MB/s copy between two enclosures) on my laptop using a 1.5Mbps SATA card.

Cons: For eSATA connectivity, the enclosure is powered by a power cable from a USB slot on your computer. The problem is that the cable MASSCOOL shipped to me in 8 of the 10 enclosures I ordered had the polarity reversed. It was the wrong cable.

Consequently, the two hard drives and enclosures that I connected using the wrong cables burned out the hard drives and the enclosures. The one pair that was shipped with the right cables works fine.

I am working with MASSCOOL directly to get the replacement cables and replacement hard drives and enclosures sent to me but it's going very slow. The company I deal with is called Fanner Tech corp. They acknowledged the problem and said they will ship me new cables - this was 3 weeks ago! So I'm sitting with a lot of useless stuff.

Beware when ordering these enclosures. Test the polarity BEFORE connecting it. It should be negative inside and positive on the outside (where it plugs into the enclosure) otherwise it WILL destroy your equipment.

2 out of 5 eggseSATA may be useless

Pros: Nice paint job. USB seems pretty fast.

Cons: eSATA connections are useless if your hard drive needs more than 500 mA of current. Since the supplied USB power cable (USB to barrel plug) is only single-headed, the drive only gets 500 mA of current. If you try to use the "power" USB connector (the thinner of the two wires) on the double-headed USB to USB cable, you will find out that plugging in the power connector (a barrel plug) disables the power coming from the USB port.

I haven't tried using the double-headed USB cable AND the eSATA connection at the same time. This sounds a little scary.

The basic problem is NO documentation is included specific to eSATA hookups and their technical support can't explain how to power the drive either.

Other Thoughts: Masscool's technical support was very unsatisfactory. No documentation is included that talks about eSATA or powering the drive. The CD and their website had nothing either.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is the one

Pros: This is the best portable hard drive case I have ever used. It does not get that hot and it looks and feels great. It has features that other do not have like extra screws, power to USB cable, eSata bracket, IEEE 1394 cable, USB y-cable and a mini screwdriver. The ends are plastic but that is not a negative. Not for quick opening and closing. Only use it for storage.

Cons: When screwing in the screws be careful. You will be screwing into plastic.

Other Thoughts: I will be buying another one of these to just keep around because they are so handy and laptop hard drives prices are dropping so fast . They make great storage drives enclosures. Also the carrying case is a nice plus.
