The NexStarLX from Vantec is a multi-purpose enclosure. You can use it as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device or as a standard USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure depending on network availability and current needs. When used with a network it can serve as an FTP and SMB server allowing remote access. The web based configuration utility makes data management easy.

Drive life is enhanced by the combination of smart cooling and a large passive heat sink. The heat sink continually radiates heat away from the drive. During heavy activity the fan powers on providing additional cooling.

This enclosure is plug and play ready, install the IDE drive (up to 750GB), plug it in and go. Everything you need is included, including a driver disk just in case. For storage and connectivity this combination is a great choice!

5 out of 5 eggsA Good Solutions for old IDE Hard Drive

Pros: So far it has been working good.
It uses an old 300 GB IDE Hard Drive to be useful again as a back up hard drive.

Cons: Not as fast as SATA but that is expected and not really a con.

Pros: lights work, but that''s all. this is however the first time I have ever had a problem with a product from Newegg. hope it's the last.

Cons: Won't connect on network, instructions to set up don't work. connected via USB, but that doesn't work either. won't plug and play, nor can I find it in disk management. would return it for a refund and received an RMA, but the shipping is nearly the cost of the item. why bother! ended up with some expensive cables and that's about it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Cheap, but tons of value for the $11 I paid for this. Bought 2 to bring life into some old pata hard drives I had. Works great as a hard drive enclosure, haven't tried it as a nas.

Cons: Sounds like the nas doesn't work so hot and your limited to using fat32, but I didn;t need it for that purpose so no eggs deducted.

Other Thoughts: looks like this is discontinued, i must have taken advantage of a clearance sale, lucky me.

5 out of 5 eggsForget Ethernet the usb is quiet and cool

Pros: It is very inexpensive for cute case that matches a mac mini.
It is the only 3.5 in case with a fan in its price range
It is switchable and quiet

Cons: It may or may not work your router
If it does you will need to use FAT 32 which is less efficient

Other Thoughts: If it works with your network its a bonus if not recycle those old IDE at a minmum of cost

3 out of 5 eggsgot this on sale for $15.99

Pros: -it is a good price
-easy setup

Cons: -for the drive as NAS it needs to be formatted into FAT32...this means that you cannot copy more than 4 GB files into it
-i bought two of these and one was not working properly

5 out of 5 eggsWorked perfect

Pros: Set up was fast, SIMPLE & easy.

Cons: None at this time.

Other Thoughts: This was a perfect replacement for my Lacey Hub that died on me. Just put the old hard drive in & it worked perfect. I got back all my music & some video of my son. For the price you cain't complain witch too many people have over the nas. Get a tissue.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than Average

Pros: Very low power usage (8 watts?)
Quiet, with thermally controlled active cooling fan.
Versatile, ethernet and USB 2.0 capabilities
.46 Firmware resolves most shortcomings of the device
Power supply is NOT a wall-wart type, allowing it to easily plug into the last spot on your power strip
Software options to automatically spin down the drive from 5 to 60 minutes.
Built in SAMBA, FTP, and DHCP servers.
Acceptable performance
*16GB file support; drives up to 400GB

Cons: Limited space internally, some drives may be very tight
Top cover has to be pried off with a screwdriver or the like.
My unit could not find a happy thermal medium, and would constantly spin the fan up and down. (may need to move internal thermistor)
Built in server can only recognize FAT32
12 bit limit on passwords.
No options to customize performance or security.
The documentation when I bought mine listed 400GB as the largest supported hard drive. (PATA)

Other Thoughts: Attractively styled and small, this entry level NAS got me up and running in minutes. And then sat in a box for several years. The major complaint was the 4GB file limit of the earlier .3x firmware. (i bought this to hold DVD ISOs on the network).
The .46 firmware changes the above. To test this before writing this review, I transferred a 9.5GB file to the NAS and back. it took about 45 minutes each way, and is the disk file of the linux install i am running as i type this.

Other Notes:
I am running an old 320GB seagate drive in the enclosure
FAT32 can store up to 2TB of data.
The NAS is reasonably fast on a decent network, anyone who claims otherwise needs to throw their junk router away.
USB 2.0 performance is as expected.
Don't expect to get your data back if the drive crashes!

3 out of 5 eggsMaybe the Next Version

Pros: Small, Quiet, & It does work as indicated**See "Cons"**

Cons: After working with many different "NAS" devices, this one is near the bottom of the list in features & function. It does not have a SMB user list, just a FTP user list.
Password protected folders are mostly inaccessible at any given time. The network transfer speed is slow.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this to remove the circuit board and mount in a rack mounted case. I have several old 60Gb removable hard drives that the users on the network can access now, It does work for this. But unless you have a stock pile of PATA drives that you want to connect to your network and don't need speed or security. Look for something else ie:Lacie, Linksys, Netgear.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks but a little slow

Pros: Works well. Have 3-4 computers hitting this at any given time and it doesn't freeze. Transfer speeds aren't the fastest for large files, but it will eventually finish. Blue lights look nice.

Cons: Plastic cover a little flimsy. Not the cheapest NAS, but still a decent price. Very slow transfers through the network with files over 500MB.

Other Thoughts: Consumes 5watts in standby, and 8watts while on. Not to shabby. The Vantec admin interface is easy to follow. I made sure to update the firmware before using this.
