Vantec's EZ-SWAP EX enclosure eliminates the hassle of extra cables for your external hard drive cluttering up your desk when not attached. It has an internal mounting rack that you install in your case in either a 3.5" or 5.25" drive bay. That way all you have to do is slide in an SATA drive and it’s ready to go. When not at home there is a USB 2.0 connection for near universal connectivity.

The aluminum casing is designed to radiate heat from the drive keeping it cool and extending its life. It is also designed to keep dust out of the drive, further increasing its life. Power and activity LEDs keep you apprised of the drive’s status.

This is also a great solution for situations where data security is important or people switch desks frequently. The drive can be setup as the boot drive and the user can take it out of the rack and lock it up when they leave for lunch or the end of the day.

5 out of 5 eggsHandy little device

Pros: Mobile, somewhat fast, no wires on my tower, great for backing up documents, audio, video, and images. Small and lightweight, both usb and sata connection make for a handy little external

Cons: No ventilation, however it has not be a problem as of yet. SATA connection will not work on computers that are in IDE emulation mode. Not a fan of the large plastic release button that sticks out when the drive is in my tower.

Other Thoughts: I have two if these little things, one installed on my computer at the office and one at home. The concept is great Its small and portable. However I do wish that it would fit all the way into the drive. The protruding front with the logo and green led is not the most aesthetically pleasing aspect of this enclosure.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Well

Pros: Does what it says it will,. I have had two of these over the last year and both have worked almost flawlessly for the task they where purchased for. Construction quality is solid. easy install if you don't care about hot swappable.

Cons: Still SATA1 really wish they would do a SATA3 or eSATA update to this product. also as others have stated this thing is NOT hot swappable in its SATA bay without hair pulling effort. (USB connect hot swap works fine)

Other Thoughts: Occasionally if you don't push the drive in all the way or just right, the drive will not register and you'll have to shut down (assuming you have not gotten the hot swap to work) pull the drive out and put it back in, then reboot,.. but this does not happen often.

With that said,. i own two and am about to purchase my third.

5 out of 5 eggsgood for hot-swap drives

Pros: I installed this the last time I upgraded my Tech computer, and have been very pleased with it. I got both the SATA and IDE models, and use the same dock. I swap drives out of the cases, and it is fairly quick with just two screws required as I don't secure drive inside.

These look good for travel, but I don't use that.

Cons: AHCI mode is required, but duh! Would prefer a tooless case(that is still secure), and eSATA instead of standard SATA data and power connections. And SATA 2.0, if not 3.0 in the next version.

Other Thoughts: A few times I actually needed to use the USB port since the SATA was not working, but this was likely a drive problem. Having the flexibility made the switch simple.

Since I bought both versions, I have an extra dock. I'd like to buy more cases, but not if they only come with the dock.

5 out of 5 eggsBest 2.5 enclosure I've owned.

Pros: The Pros have to be versatility.
Being able to have a hot-swap bay mounted in my desktop's case via SATA is great. Just slide the drive in and it pop's up in Explorer within seconds.
The USB transfer rate seems a tad better than the few other enclosures I've had.
I am really liking this unit so far and hope Vantec keep's the design around for a long while.
Comes with pretty much everything you would need to go with the enclosure.
The over-sized carrying case seems a bit bulky at first, but offers a one-stop-shop for having the enclosure and the necessary USB cables on hand for external operation.

Cons: A small, but important matter.
The hot-swappable nature of the device, like other's have pointed out, will not work if the BIOS has the SATA controller set to "IDE" mode.
I had to switch my mobo's SATA controller to "AHCI" mode. Then in-turn, perform a repair install of WinXP x64 with a manual load of the controller's drivers.
Personally, this was a tad frustrating, but worth it for the added functionality.
The hot-swap bay will work when in IDE mode, but only when the drive is connected from a cold boot.

Other Thoughts: My previous enclosure's have held up quite well. Unfortunately, only time will answer the question of this enclosure's reliability, but initial impression is of a very good build quality.
The casing is mostly metal with the understandable plastic end pieces.
I wish I had an excuse to buy more of them. :-)
It is doing well with my Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 320GB H.D.D.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Enclosure

Pros: Bought this enclosure with the IDE internal interface and have been very happy with it and I plan to get the serial ATA internal interface as well. I've bought several products from Vantec and will continue to do so. Highly recommended!

Cons: None so far! But electronics don't last forever.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat/Cheap server backup solution

Pros: I've got 6 sets of these running. Never had a problem or failure. Good quality for the price. The cart has been changed out daily (at one location for over three years) - never had a problem of any kind with the tray mechanism or connections.

Cons: None to speak of

Other Thoughts: Get two and alternate baremetal backup daily (one cartridge always offsite). Spend a few extra bucks and get a 7200 rpm Sata 3 laptop HD for use in these cartridges. Cheapest protection for your business or personal data available. Make sure your mobo supports HotSwap or get an add-on sata card that does.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this box

Pros: I have two of these already and buying a third. What is great about them is that it works beautifully as a hotswappable SATA drive and then pull it out and it becomes a USB drive. The last time I got one of these, it came with a great zippered carrying case, too. A complete package for less then some 2.5" cases alone

Cons: None that I have found.

Other Thoughts: I wish they would sell the box alone without the tray, but for $31 I guess it is still a deal.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Everything functioned just as intended, no problems with any of the components. I have an 80gb 5400rpm drive in this sucker, with no over-heating, or problems what-so-ever.

The case feels sturdy, and I'm not afraid to throw it in my bag with the rest of my stuff. I've carried it with me now for almost a year and there still isn't even any cosmetic damage!

Cons: None!

3 out of 5 eggsCould be better

Pros: recognized with WDC 250GB SATA instantly. Transfer rates under USB decent. Priced Reasonable

Cons: Frame does not work with ESATA port on DG33TL board. Crashs system. Will work connected to regular SATA port on-board but is not hot swappable.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to be a transfer drive between work and home. Unable to use in Frame unless system is in power off state. I use it not as a usb enclosure fully
