Magic Smoke
- Pros: I finally got around to trying this device out after purchasing it a while ago. It is a great idea in theory and the price was right. I wish I had waited for more reviews before purchasing.
- Cons: During a CD boot of F9 with a perfectly good (took it out of another machine to test with) Western Digital 80GB ST380013AS drive the machine would appear to hang. After about a minute of waiting for things to unstick on their own I looked over to see smoke coming out of the slot. One of the components on the back of the drive got so hot it cracked and melted the inside of the drive dock.
- Other Thoughts: I hooked it up using an eSATA plate also purchased from Newegg (the KingWin 15" cable model I believe). I'm not sure where the problem lies, but I suspect it is somewhere between these two items. The SATA ports on the MB work fine and the drive worked fine before all this. I suppose the drive might have gone bad during the switch, but this doesn't seem likely.
I have since read several more reviews online for different Vantec NexStar products that went bad also producing smoke and/or ruining hard drives. I think I will be steering clear of them from now on and recommend you all do the same.
Design and build could be better
- Pros: Product works as advertised. VANTEC seems to have taken all the negative comments made on ThermalTake U0028USU and addressed them here. For example, a major complain for the ThermalTake unit is the on/off switch is on the back of the unit. VANTEC's unit has a big white on/off button in the front. A second complain for ThermalTake's unit is the lack of SATA interface. VANTEC has provided just that. This was a big part of my decision in purchasing this unit.
- Cons: Both design and build quality needs work. First issue - The unit noticeably weighs less than ThermalTake. In fact, the box feels like a cheap plastic box where ThermalTake actually feels like a paper weight. Just to be fair, once you insert the hard Drive, it's unlikely the unit will ever tip over. Second issue - The height of the unit is about an inch higher than ThermalTake which causes potential heating issue. These docking stations rely on regular airflow to cool the hard drives. An inch cover a large portion of the hard drive surface needed for cooling. I've notice the hard drive docked in VANTEC's docking station get's hot faster than in ThermalTake. Third issue - The docking bay door is a looser fit than the one on ThermalTake's unit. If the hard drive is only connected by a small area at the docking station base, it's no good that I can wiggle the hard drive from the top which may essentially damage the connecting interface.
- Other Thoughts: VANTEC's unit works as advertised; they took complaints and addressed accordingly. However, their own design exhibit flaws that will need to be addressed as a competitive product. If ThermalTake addresses the complaints in the next version of the product (on/off button, SATA interface), my choice will be ThermalTake.

usb great esat good
- Pros: Plug it in it works. Usb works on all my systems. It is fast and very useful. No driver installs no anything it just works.
- Cons: Esat works but needs a restart when you change anything
A must-have
- Pros: I've owned one of these for almost two years, and I don't know how I lived without it. I use this thing daily, both with desktop and notebook hard drives. It is one of the best little inventions I have come across. I use it for backing up data, for swapping drives around, for recovering data, for occasional booting....all kinds of stuff. I leave a hard drive in it for my nightly backup. I swap other hard drives in it for accessing archived data, backing up my system, etc. I use Acronis to make bootable clones of my system, so if my main RAID ever dies, I can swap in a clone and be up and running in minutes. I like this so much that I have taken all of the external SATA hard drives out of their cases and instead use this dock exclusively. It is just so much easier to leave everything hooked up and then just plug hard drives in and out.
- Cons: The only real con that I have with mine is that the activity light does not work. It never has. The other thing I wish was different about it is that I wish that the door would completely seal off the SATA port when a hard drive is not installed. Currently, a hole remains for laptop-sized drives. But, with no drive, then all kinds of dust can accumulate in there. They should have made the door completely seal when not in use.
- Other Thoughts: Your success using this with esata will depend a lot on your motherboard. I have used this with several computers with varying success. On my current motherboard, esata only works with AHCI mode. Sometimes esata will work in a "non-raid" mode, but other times not. On my previous motherboard, I installed a dedicated esata card, with this dock connected to it. Fortunately, if you can't get esata to work, there is always USB as an option, since this dock also has USB built in.
A solid dock
- Pros: Had this thing for almost two years now, replaced and old enclosure and i've had success with at least 5 different harddrives working with it. My friends have needed to use it several times to recover data from a dieing computer. Works nice over several platforms i.e. windows, linux and mac, and is recognized within seconds of being plugged into a new system. Great dock for the price.
- Cons: The blue led light is a little bright for over night use, ends up acting as a nightlight if i dont cover it up or turn it off.
- Other Thoughts: Might get one as a gift for my friend so he stops using mine.
