3 out of 5 eggsWorked until it didn't

Pros: Worked well for about nine months. Fast transfers over esata, slow over USB 2.0 as expected.

Beautiful finish and really sturdy. I felt like the drives were well protected even though once it was on my desk it never moved.

Cons: Died after about 9 months of rather minimal usage.

First problems required multiple off and on to get either windows (7&8) or linux (Fedora) to read the device. Problems persisted for both usb and esata. Eventually, no longer recognized on any system or connection.

Pulled the drives and ran smart scans no issue there. Tried other drives, no go. Faulty enclosure.

Other Thoughts: I got this primarily as a USB device and it worked great. I also used for large transfers with the esata and port multiplier which also worked great.

I put in for an RMA through Vantec, and it was approved, but I don't know if the hassle and $25 shipping are worth getting it replaced. I have other vantec enclosures and this isn't the first problem. I won't be buying them again, but there isn't much out that is comparable that have similar quality reviews.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good

Pros: Good build quality. Solid. Easy installation.

Cons: Case screws didn't line up perfectly and one was hard to reinsert. Doesn't seem to be able to create a RAID array from a single drive. Rather, forces you to re-format all inserted drives during initial setup.

Other Thoughts: Contrary to what others are saying here, I was able to change RAID modes without powering the unit off. Not sure how to explain the different experience. With the drives inserted into the unit, I plugged the unit in. I saw two separate drives in my Disk Manager. I changed the DIP switch settings to JBOD (by accident--I wanted RAID 1) and held down the reset button. I saw a double-sized drive. I changed the DIP switch settings and held down the reset button again, and saw a single volume of the expected size for RAID 1.

One thing, though: the reset button did nothing while the enclosure was connected to the PC, so I had to disconnect it each time I wanted to press the reset button.

I hoped that by inserting a single drive (with data on it) and then enabling RAID 1, I could get the enclosure to "rebuild" the volume by inserting a second (empty) drive later. This didn't work. As long as only one drive was inserted, the enclosure would not enter RAID 1 mode. As soon as I inserted a second drive, the enclosure happily entered RAID 1 mode, but it erased all partitions on the drives and made me start from scratch. Contrary to what others on here have said, I did not have to format the drives separately.

4 out of 5 eggsWorking but RAID 1 setup is not clear

Pros: Working so far.

Cons: RAID 1 is not clear on how to set up. You can't just flip the switches to on, on, off, off like the book says. You must hold the reset button in and turn the unit on and continue holding for 15 seconds and then your good to go.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Box, RAID setup needs help

Pros: Solid Construction
USB and eSATA
Great Speed (RAID1 tested)

Cons: Poor Documentation

Other Thoughts: I was really excited to have a simple RAID1 enclosure; I can setup raid1 in linux in an heartbeat, but I wanted to use this without having to worry about md setup if I moved it from server to server.

Here's how I ended up getting RAID1 to work:

1. Open up the container
2. change dip switches to RAID1 mode, 1-OFF, 2-OFF, 3-ON, 4-ON
3. connect usb to computer
4. connect power to box
5. power on enclosure (no drives installed yet) while holding reset switch; hold for 10 seconds.
On your host, you may see the 8M block device, and once it resets it will come and go. The only indication that something has happened is seeing the block device disconnect and reconnect.
6. Shut it off and install one of your two drives
7. Power on... this should show your single drive
8. Format
9. power off
10. Add second drive
11 power on

At this point, you should see just one drive, and after a bit of time, you'll see both BLUE lights come on as the device is syncing the first drive dat

2 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to setup

Cons: Data transfer was intermittent. I tried to use it in RAID 1 with eSATA so I can't comment about anything else. The device would freeze in the middle of transferring data. Most of the time I couldn't complete a file transfer without the system locking up and having to force a reboot.

Other Thoughts: I followed the instructions in the manual as well as the tech tips left by other commentators. I gave it two eggs because maybe the system would work with USB 2.0 but I am returning it b/c I'm not paying for something that doesn't work correctly.

4 out of 5 eggs1st Impression: Almost Wonderful

Pros: SOLID build. HDDs slide right into SATA connectors just as easily and nicely as my HP ProLiant servers. Housing seems like solid construction.

Cons: Manual is a little flaky. "Press Reset Button" after changing jumper mode really means "Press Reset Button while power is on". Could save some people who take things literally a lot of frustration and time.

As nice as the chassis build quality is the 4 screws to open it up do not auto-align to the cover very nicely at all, and feel pretty cheap compared to the casing material.

Other Thoughts: Take my Cons with a grain of salt, folks. I am simply providing immediate first-impressions. Do I think it has value at its price? Absolutely! Am I happy? So far, absolutely.

5 out of 5 eggsNexStar MX

Pros: These really are excellent units - I currently have 5 of them under my computer desk. They are quiet, and I've never had a problem with any of them. Open it up (4 screws on the back), remove cover, insert SATA drive(s), ensure drive is secure, (yes, Vantec supply the hard drive screws, 4 per drive and one spare for folks like me who nearly always drop one and can't find it again!), replace cover and rear screws, connect power cable, connect USB cable, connect USB to PC, power cable to power, and hey presto, Windows should find your drives straight away - oh, provided you've remembered to turn it on that is.

Cons: The fans can get clogged up, so give them a squirt of air every now and then. I'm yet to have a fan failure on them. The earliest one dates from June 2010, and that fan has worked every day, they are never turned off, unless I'm cleaning them or changing out hard drives. And no hard drive has died whilst in their care.

Other Thoughts: These are just about the best external enclosures on the market today.

4 out of 5 eggsWorking Great

Pros: Great unit for the price. Raid 1 was simple after reading all the reviews, before I purchased. Since this unit is placed near a 1U rack unit I can't hear the fan as the 1U fans are much louder. Very easy to install drives. Must select operation and press the reset button before copying any data. I have two 1.5YB drive for my movies and is work great! Buying another for two 1TB drives for even more movies.

Cons: No supplied monitor software. If you need to know how your drives are doing, download Silicon Image software 57xx SteelVine.

Other Thoughts: Good buy, but do your homework and know what and how you will use this device. Don't use "green drives" when doing any raid! Good luck.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent box, bad instructions

Pros: As small as it could be and still fit 2 drives and controller. Fan IS a bit loud, but not unreasonable. Solid aluminum construction built like a tank.

Cons: Must be plugged into a host (either usb or esata) for raid array to rebuild?!?!?!?!? Documentation is junk, incomplete, inaccurate.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive to use my 2 Seagate 2TB drives in raid 1 attached to my router. From the factory, the dip switch settings didn't match anything in the instruction manual. Initial format of individual drives (with the undocumentd dip switch setting) worked fine. But, after changing to RAID-1 per instruction manual, could only see 8GB partition! After trying the settings in the manual, I found that the DIP settings silkscreened on the PCB of the controller were right. Make sure enclosure is plugged into a PC, change dip settings while powered off. Hold tiny reset switch while turning power on, then for another 10 seconds after that. Use the SteelVine 57xx Manager (Version 5.1.24b) to monitor raid construction and verify what mode the enclosure is in.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not waste your time.

Pros: Good case design

Cons: Never got it to work in Raid 1. One drive was DOA, props to Newegg for a quick RMA turnaround, got the replacement put in, worked for about a day or two then transfer speeds dropped to approximately 150 kbs and went back to check the replacement drive and it wasn't mirroring to it regardless of using the instructions. At this point my systems only recognize it rarely and the rest of the time it will crash explorer when trying to open it up through disk management or my computer.
