5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Sturdy design. Functional. It has a power switch on the back.

Cons: The indicator light can be a bit bright. Nothing a bit of tape can't fix for you.

Other Thoughts: I actually own 3 of these with various interfaces (all usb2.0 at least) and I've ordered 1 more. They are a great value. I like being able to pick out my own hard drive and then get an enclosure with a power switch. Some external drives don't have a power switch and you have to unplug them. I've got 1TB working in them and I'm equipping another with 2TB when I get it. I get 14-20MB/second transfer through the USB interface. If you're doing backups you're talking roughly 20 hours for 1000GB. Consider using the eSATA if you want something faster.

3 out of 5 eggsGood case / poor cable

Pros: The case is solid and dissipates heat.

Cons: The LED is bright and the included eSATA cable is of lower quality.

Other Thoughts: Expect to get a different eSATA cable for any serious use.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Good value. Works great as either a USB 2.0 device or eSATA. I have tried both 1.5 TB and 2 TB drives in it. They both worked flawlessly. I tried both the USB 2.0 and the eSATA. Easy to assemble. I like the blue indicator light as it is easy to see.

Cons: None

2 out of 5 eggsSturdy External Enclosure, Fatally Flawed Electronics (vers 1.02)

Pros: Seems to function properly with WD or Hitachi drives.

Cons: Doesn't work with Seagate drives.

Other Thoughts: Newegg had this on sale at a ridiculously low price with free shipping so I went ahead and ordered one. After unboxing (I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the enclosure) I installed a Seagate Barracuda ES.2 drive but unfortunately the drive failed to spin up after applying power (blinking LED) - same result using another drive.

So after trying several other drives I discovered that it was only the Seagates that were failing in this manner - Western Digital and Hitachi drives worked as expected. I initially thought that the Seagate drives might have higher peak current requirements than either the WD or Hitachi but then I tried a 2.5" Momentus 7200.4 which also failed. In total I tried four different Seagate models none of which worked properly with the NexStar CX.

Incidentally I was able to get the Seagate drives to spin up after applying power if I also connected to a PC (either via USB or eSATA) but often would get an error message that the device was not working properly and would have to disconnect/reconnect before I could access data (perhaps Vantec circuit board is not properly generating +5v from +12v input).

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good value, works fine on USB

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I recently took a 1.5TB drive out of my HTPC and bought this enclosure so that I could use the drive for backups. It came with both USB and eSATA cables but I was unable to use the eSATA. I am unsure as to whether I actually plugged in my eSATA ports internally so can't comment about if it's an issue on my end or with the product. I was up and running right away on USB though and considering that it's for occasional use, USB is fast enough for me. For the price, I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent support, great product...

Pros: Small size, good design, easy assembly. The case is designed to be slightly larger than a regular 3.5" hard drive, the body is made of aluminum and the ends are plastic. The inside slides out of one end (held in place by two small screws), allowing you to screw the drive onto a frame that also holds the interface board. At this point you have the option of plugging in the LED cable or skipping it for those who are annoyed by the bright light.

I bought three of these for a project and was disappointed when I couldn't get any of them to work with eSATA, although USB worked fine. I pulled out an old cable from my Rosewill external enclosure and found that all three worked fine. I contacted Vantec on a Friday afternoon, expecting to hear back the next week. Within a few minutes I had an email back and almost ignored it thinking it was an automated response! I followed a few more troubleshooting tips they gave and found the same results.

I received three new cables in the mail today and tested them, getting positive results with all three. I can't believe the odds of getting three bad cables, but I am very impressed with the quick response and painless fix to my problem. Thank you Vantec Support for making this right.

Cons: None at all, very impressed with the quality for this price.

Other Thoughts: I have owned many enclosures, and my favorites have usually been Vantec. Although the price has sometimes caused me to try other brands, I will definitely rethink this in the future!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Bargain Enclosure

Pros: The aluminum body of this enclosure is ideal to aid in the dissipation of heat from the hard drive. Either way, I don't like to use anything but WD Greens in non-vented enclosures and that's exactly what I have in this. The unit is only warm to the touch even under sustained read/write operations. As far as the assembly goes, it was amazingly simple, just as it should be.

Cons: I only worry about a two things with external drives, the power supply and the interface card. These ultra-cheap switching power supplies almost always fail within 1-2 years, especially if you leave them plugged in all the time. If you want something that lasts longer (and provides cleaner power to the drive), go ahead and buy a decent 12volt supply. It is worth the peace of mind alone. Otherwise, the interface also has a life expectancy (which can be extended with quality power supplies), but don't expect more than 3-5 years out of it with regular use. Hopefully by that time you'll be wanting a drive with higher than 3GB capacity.

Other Thoughts: This unit is exactly what I stated, a bargain enclosure. It's ideal for backups and the like, but I would look to something with a fan and a higher quality components for every-day use. If you're looking to put anything other than a "backup-drive" class drive in here, just don't. You'll be disappointed in the long run when your expensive drive dies after a year from heat exhaustion.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good design. Comes with base and esata/usb connectivity.

Cons: HD activity light cable attaches at strange angle and is hard to get out of way of closing the case.

Other Thoughts: I've bought 2 of these and so far I've had no issues. For the price, it's spot on. Buying the enclosure and drive separately seems to yield better results than buying a blah external hd which usually have bad reviews and don't have esata/usb connectivity that I like.

2 out of 5 eggseSata doesn't work

Pros: Free eSata cable

Cons: eSata doesn't work. Tried the enclosure with 3 different computers .... neither of them recognized it.

Other Thoughts: USB 2.0 is fine, but that's not what I bought this for.
