4 out of 5 eggsGood product but eSATA cable is junk

Pros: Low price
Decent build quality, especially for the price
Power button is a nice feature
eSATA connection
Customer Service

Cons: The eSATA cable did not work on two PCs. I also have an Oyen eSATA enclosure - it and its cable work fine with my new PC. The Oyen cable also works with the Vantec. I called Vantec and they promptly sent a new cable (kudos for good customer service) but it didn't work either. I realized that the shield too big on the Vantec cable. I cut about 2 mm off both ends so that it could penetrate deeper into the PC and Vantec enclosure . . . all good now.

Other Thoughts: Either buy a different eSATA cable or be prepared to modify the stock cable.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going

Pros: Metal construction is solid and dissipates heat well. Versatile design, can lay flat or vertically with a stand, on/off switch. Still working great after 4+ years of constant use.

Cons: USB 2.0

Other Thoughts: Probably not fair to list USB 2.0 as a con, since I got this 4+ years ago, but that is the only thing I can think of that I would prefer to be different.

2 out of 5 eggsNot so good

Pros: Does the job I bought if for - which is to connect a disk via eSATA.

Cons: Seems to be a little light and flimsy compared to the Vantec NexStar 6G (NST-366S3-BK) I bought a couple of days ago for a similar price.

Arrangement for hooking up the LED indicator is hokey. It probably won't take many disk insertions and removals to break the wire.

The stand that holds the case upright does not grip it at all, again in contrast to the other Vantec model.

The supplied eSATA cable did not work and hung my PC when I tried to use it.

Case screws are needlessly fiddly.

Other Thoughts: The only reason to buy this is if you have to have eSATA and you don't care it's only USB 2.0. If you can use USB 3.0, buy the newer model (mentioned above) instead. The price is more or less the same.

I don't much care for the curved look of this case, but your tastes make differ.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Sleek design. Works great. Awesome price for the included features. No problems with installation or with the firmware. Item as described.

Cons: Heating is an issue, stopped using product after concerns with overheating and burning out the hard drive. If there was a better ventilation setup, this would be a great product. I'm very satisfied with Vantec products, just not convinced this product distributes heat properly.

Other Thoughts: Sad that I chose not to use the item, but I am keeping it to drill mini holes through the case to try improving the overheating issue.

1 out of 5 eggsDead on 17th month!

Pros: None at his point as device does not power on (spin up) HDDs, tried 3 different known good HDDs.

Cons: I barely used this HDD enclosure and it died on 17th month. Of course warranty is 1 year, but it sad that Vantec making products that fail quick after warranty expires. It is very convenient for them.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Sturdy design. Functional. It has a power switch on the back.

Cons: The indicator light can be a bit bright. Nothing a bit of tape can't fix for you.

Other Thoughts: I actually own 3 of these with various interfaces (all usb2.0 at least) and I've ordered 1 more. They are a great value. I like being able to pick out my own hard drive and then get an enclosure with a power switch. Some external drives don't have a power switch and you have to unplug them. I've got 1TB working in them and I'm equipping another with 2TB when I get it. I get 14-20MB/second transfer through the USB interface. If you're doing backups you're talking roughly 20 hours for 1000GB. Consider using the eSATA if you want something faster.

3 out of 5 eggsGood case / poor cable

Pros: The case is solid and dissipates heat.

Cons: The LED is bright and the included eSATA cable is of lower quality.

Other Thoughts: Expect to get a different eSATA cable for any serious use.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Good value. Works great as either a USB 2.0 device or eSATA. I have tried both 1.5 TB and 2 TB drives in it. They both worked flawlessly. I tried both the USB 2.0 and the eSATA. Easy to assemble. I like the blue indicator light as it is easy to see.

Cons: None

2 out of 5 eggsSturdy External Enclosure, Fatally Flawed Electronics (vers 1.02)

Pros: Seems to function properly with WD or Hitachi drives.

Cons: Doesn't work with Seagate drives.

Other Thoughts: Newegg had this on sale at a ridiculously low price with free shipping so I went ahead and ordered one. After unboxing (I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the enclosure) I installed a Seagate Barracuda ES.2 drive but unfortunately the drive failed to spin up after applying power (blinking LED) - same result using another drive.

So after trying several other drives I discovered that it was only the Seagates that were failing in this manner - Western Digital and Hitachi drives worked as expected. I initially thought that the Seagate drives might have higher peak current requirements than either the WD or Hitachi but then I tried a 2.5" Momentus 7200.4 which also failed. In total I tried four different Seagate models none of which worked properly with the NexStar CX.

Incidentally I was able to get the Seagate drives to spin up after applying power if I also connected to a PC (either via USB or eSATA) but often would get an error message that the device was not working properly and would have to disconnect/reconnect before I could access data (perhaps Vantec circuit board is not properly generating +5v from +12v input).

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good value, works fine on USB

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I recently took a 1.5TB drive out of my HTPC and bought this enclosure so that I could use the drive for backups. It came with both USB and eSATA cables but I was unable to use the eSATA. I am unsure as to whether I actually plugged in my eSATA ports internally so can't comment about if it's an issue on my end or with the product. I was up and running right away on USB though and considering that it's for occasional use, USB is fast enough for me. For the price, I am very pleased.
