5 out of 5 eggsVery Complete!

Pros: -Price--this thing is dirt cheap.

-Included accessories--as titled, this enclosure comes very complete. For the price it's actually surprising, and I've had more pricey/flash enclosures come with less.

-Does exactly what it's supposed to do.

Cons: -Build quality is not super, PCB/connectors don't look the greatest. But hey this thing is under $10, you can't expect the world!

-Limited connectivity (i.e. USB 2.0 only)

-No Eggs removed for these cons because the enclosure is not priced in a way that you'd expect those things.

Other Thoughts: Personally I usually buy more expensive enclosures than this and at a minimum having eSATA and/or USB 3.0. However I purchased this on behalf of a family member that asked me to help them out with their laptop and used this to enclose their old HDD for backup purposes (added an SSD to the laptop's main drive). Given it's an older/basic laptop and only has USB 2.0 ports I figured might as well give this one a whirl.

Was pretty surprised at just how much Vantec includes with this little guy, particularly at its sub-$10 price. You get not only the enclosure, screws, and a dual-head cable but also a sleeve/case for the enclosure. It's a pretty cheap/minimal sleeve but still nice that they give you one nonetheless. They even give you a mini-screwdriver to assemble the thing!

The enclosure isn't the smallest but it's not large either and the drive is a nice snug fit. At first I was worried the drive might flop around in the enclosure because there's nothing really holding it like a rail or anything inside but the foam end-stop and pressure against said foam from assembly, is enough to secure the drive nicely.

USB 2.0 performance is what you'd expect--nothing more, nothing less.

The PCB and connectors don't seem like it's something you'd want to plug/unplug or change drives inside a ton of times, but again at the price you can't expect super high build quality. I'd suggest, for example, to not connect/disconnect the cable from the enclosure that often. Instead leave the cable connected and just connect/disconnect it from whatever PC or device you're using it with.

In the end I was easily able to do what my uncle needed with this enclosure, for minimal cost to him. Set up an auto-backup on his laptop so whenever he plugs it in it backs up. Does the job.

Bottom line? If you only need USB 2.0 and need to make a 2.5" drive external? This is the ticket. 5 Eggs for sure!

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible value

Pros: Good idea

Cons: Never worked properly. Useless documentation. Eventually the eSATA connection failed and I lost all my data. Tried it on different desktops and with different eSATA cables but never worked again.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't use this again even if it were free!

Pros: Works as it should, cable is a good length, the documentation that came with mine says it works for up to 1 TB, not 750 GB.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate to previous review

Pros: Speed is actually faster than expected.
But still only a tenth of what they claim.
I saw 40mbs NOT ssd speeds of 450mbs

Cons: Always spins the drive.
Lack of screw pack leaving me to secure it myself.

Other Thoughts: At first I thought this was DOA. After fiddling around with it for a little each day, I finally got it to be recognized about 25% of the time.

Though this should be obvious, but after reading others reviews idk, so ill mention it.
There is two large USB ends on this cable for a reason, connect them both to the computer.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: The foam padding on the back end that stops vibration.
I didn't pay for shipping.

Cons: It doesn't work.
It just spins the drive and does not get recognized.
Missing screw pack leaving the whole purpose of the unit useless.

Other Thoughts: Its not even worth the shipping to return it, but I am thinking about it just so they might stop selling this poor of a quality checked part.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: It works right off the bat. No complaints here, and if you need an enclosure that functions, I don't think you should have any hesitance with this product.

Cons: The build is cheap, but you also don't pay much for it, so I suppose you get what you pay for. The SATA connector feels flimsy, and if you're not careful connecting/disconnecting your HD, you could easily pull it off from the chip that it's attached to. The screw holes on the plastic end pieces didn't come large enough to fit the screws- I had to force the screws in to enlarge the holes slightly so that they could fit in. Thought they definitely could have done better with that.

Other Thoughts: It works. It's not the most fabulous case ever, but it definitely serves its purpose.

3 out of 5 eggsMatches Your $100 Case

Pros: The NexStar gets the job done at a decent price point. Installation is simple, and given the robust aluminum construction, you won't ever need to do it again until the hard drive inside fails. The SATA connection seemed firm, so no need to worry about the insides slowly falling apart. This enclosure loves telling you when there is hard drive activity, even in a brightly lit room. If you have a dark gaming rig, the NexStar will feel right at home. Also comes with a complementary faux leather sleeve with nice stitches.

Cons: A sharp eye and steady hand in installing the minuscule screws may be necessary in order to avoid frustration.
Multiple cable connections have confirmed that this case is antisocial. The USB mini-b port doesn't firmly hug interfaces as most do, resulting in cables slowly slipping into disconnections.
The aluminum case, with its spray-on paint job, feels like it might be prone to scratches (hence the sleeve).
Surprisingly enough, this enclosure lacks rubber feet, or any feet at all.

Other Thoughts: The Vantec NexStar TX delivers on its promises, but it does not embellish further.
