4 out of 5 eggsCheap, works as intended

Pros: Comes out of the box and works right away. No fuss. Nice aluminum case.

Cons: Construction is a little cheap. Ends are made of plastic. The screws for the case go into the end with the PCB. The screw holes are easy to strip. The hot glue holding the PCB to the plastic top leaves more to be desired.

Other Thoughts: No complaints; has been working for a long time with no issues.

4 out of 5 eggsWhat you would expect

Pros: Simple, easy to install, works as it should.

Had an old 4200RPM drive laying around and I thought it would make a great low power \ cool running external drive for my router's expansion ability. This has been hosting all my videos and streams them without any problems to my Dish Hopper.

Cons: The included screw driver will strip the screws real quickly. So if you decide to use it make sure this is going to be a one time install!

Other Thoughts: My router supports USB3.0, so it may sound odd to use a USB2.0 enclosure with an old 4200RPM HDD for streaming videos. But if you consider the cost and the fact we don't stream to more than one device at a time on average, this is a no brainer!

5 out of 5 eggsThis enclosure is fantastic and economical!

Pros: I have bought 4 of these over the past several years and they have stood the test of time. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is in the market for a simple HDD enclosure solution that doesn't hurt your wallet.

Very rarely do I have to plug in the second USB cable due to low port power on the part of my devices. I am fascinated by how small the enclosure actually is and it's a far cry from the huge cases I was used to lugging around with a power cable and brick hither and thither.

Cons: None that I have noticed.

4 out of 5 eggsFeels big and bulky

Pros: Metal enclosure which should dissipate heat. It was relatively easy to install the hard drive, and the screwdriver included was better than most. Seems to work well for its intended use, which was to reuse a left-over laptop hard drive.

Cons: None at this time

Other Thoughts: The enclosure feels big and bulky with squarish corners compared to other enclosures. It is hard to slide it into the cheap leatherette sleeve provided.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: This enclosure is a tough little guy. Well worth the low price. Does exactly what it is supposed to do.

Cons: Not USB 3.0...but there is one available for a bit more.

5 out of 5 eggsIt worked!

Pros: Came with everything I needed! Even a itty bitty screwdriver!
Very light.
Managed to use this to clone my HDD onto a newer and larger one within a few hours

Cons: Screws easily strip, was kind of a hassle to seat the docking thing then attach the screws.
Transfer rate is a bit slow w/ USB 2.0 I cloned my HDD in about 2.5 hours.

4 out of 5 eggsquick, easy, and solid

Pros: Slim, light weight, and really easy to install a drive into (so long as you have a philips-head itty-bitty screw driver).

Cons: super-minor drawbacks: (1) the plastic separator card slides around a lot inside, which is a disconcerting sounds, but has no actual effect. (2) uses eyeglass screws which would be easy to loose if not careful when installing a drive.

Other Thoughts: initially had some issues using it to transfer files between a Linux system and Windows system, but I am 99% sure that was a partition table snafu on the drive I used.

4 out of 5 eggsNice cheap enclosure

Pros: Low price and still performs excellently for tasks like backups. Stays relatively cool when in use.

Cons: Little drive protection and the screws strip very easily.

Other Thoughts: There doesn't seem to be a point in using a USB Y connector unless you have an older computer that can't meet the power requirements.

1 out of 5 eggsNo ESD Protection

Pros: nice looking
comes with a case
comes with a dual USB cable for more power

Cons: Fried my hard drive - ESD

Other Thoughts: I replaced the 500 GB hard drive in my wife's notebook a few years ago with an SSD. I purchased this NexStar TX USB caddy and put the 500GB hard drive in it.

All went well for a couple of years; we almost never used it. One day, whilst it was plugged into a computer, I walked over and touched the NexStar TX and there was a small discharge of static electricity from my hand. The drive immediately went dead. The drive is dead, even when removed from this caddy.

Don't buy something that leaves your drive so unprotected. The PCB of the hard drive even has a plastic covering on it, yet a simple touch still fried it.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Surprisingly well built. Included cable is of decent quality. Comes with soft protective cover. Even includes the tools needed, and extra screws.
Got it free with an HD HomeRun - will probably pick up another one or two.

Cons: SATA board doesn't seem to be attached to the case all that securely, seems like it would break easily... just be gentle with it. Included plastic protector for the hard drive rattles around in there. Would have been nice if it was large enough to cover the entire bottom of the case and not move around.

Other Thoughts: With an older Toshiba 5,400RPM drive, I am getting 35~50MB/sec write speeds depending on the location on the drive, and 40~50MB/sec read speeds.

It does need two USB ports to provide enough power for the drive, unless you have a newer Gigabyte board (or similar) with extra power on a single port.
