4 out of 5 eggsquick, easy, and solid

Pros: Slim, light weight, and really easy to install a drive into (so long as you have a philips-head itty-bitty screw driver).

Cons: super-minor drawbacks: (1) the plastic separator card slides around a lot inside, which is a disconcerting sounds, but has no actual effect. (2) uses eyeglass screws which would be easy to loose if not careful when installing a drive.

Other Thoughts: initially had some issues using it to transfer files between a Linux system and Windows system, but I am 99% sure that was a partition table snafu on the drive I used.

4 out of 5 eggsNice cheap enclosure

Pros: Low price and still performs excellently for tasks like backups. Stays relatively cool when in use.

Cons: Little drive protection and the screws strip very easily.

Other Thoughts: There doesn't seem to be a point in using a USB Y connector unless you have an older computer that can't meet the power requirements.

1 out of 5 eggsNo ESD Protection

Pros: nice looking
comes with a case
comes with a dual USB cable for more power

Cons: Fried my hard drive - ESD

Other Thoughts: I replaced the 500 GB hard drive in my wife's notebook a few years ago with an SSD. I purchased this NexStar TX USB caddy and put the 500GB hard drive in it.

All went well for a couple of years; we almost never used it. One day, whilst it was plugged into a computer, I walked over and touched the NexStar TX and there was a small discharge of static electricity from my hand. The drive immediately went dead. The drive is dead, even when removed from this caddy.

Don't buy something that leaves your drive so unprotected. The PCB of the hard drive even has a plastic covering on it, yet a simple touch still fried it.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Surprisingly well built. Included cable is of decent quality. Comes with soft protective cover. Even includes the tools needed, and extra screws.
Got it free with an HD HomeRun - will probably pick up another one or two.

Cons: SATA board doesn't seem to be attached to the case all that securely, seems like it would break easily... just be gentle with it. Included plastic protector for the hard drive rattles around in there. Would have been nice if it was large enough to cover the entire bottom of the case and not move around.

Other Thoughts: With an older Toshiba 5,400RPM drive, I am getting 35~50MB/sec write speeds depending on the location on the drive, and 40~50MB/sec read speeds.

It does need two USB ports to provide enough power for the drive, unless you have a newer Gigabyte board (or similar) with extra power on a single port.

3 out of 5 eggsQuality has decreased

Pros: Still works fine and price is good

Cons: Significantly thicker than 2011 version, case and USB cable not as nice

Other Thoughts: I bought one of these in 2011 and it has worked very well. Bought two more recently and was disappointed to find that the quality has decreased. Enclosure is thicker, screws no longer threaded, now "self threading" into plastic. Soft storage case not nearly as nice as the earlier model. USB cable thicker and harder to roll up. Still works fine, just disappointed that they weren't as nice as what I got previously.

1 out of 5 eggsdoesn't work

Pros: N/A

Cons: It only lights up the green led and doesn't power the hard drive let alone transfer data. I've only used it 3 times.

4 out of 5 eggsdoes the job

Pros: Well made
Easy to install
Price $

Cons: USB2, Takes two USB ports to run.
20-30mb/s transfers
Slippery case
Short USB cord

Other Thoughts: If you have a USB3 port, do yourself the favor and just get the USB3 version of this product. Only one port is used & the transfer rates are ~5x better.

4 out of 5 eggsBeing used for what I had in mind!

Pros: USB powered
Black
Sleek
Activity light
USB splitter to use on multiple devices at 1 time, I guess?
Sleek pouch
No need for an external power cord

Cons: No screw holes for mounting the HDD or SSD securely
No fan (not that it gets very hot, probably was designed for SSD)

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my old PS3 80GB HDD to use as an MP3 storage device and play in my car stereo through the USB port. had some trouble with it not playing more than 255 songs but that was a limitation of the stereo via 255 per folder, so I put 255 songs in each of the 4 folders I created. Now it plays all 800+ songs I have.

I formatted the HDD to FAT32 using a third party program as Windows wont do more than 16GB or something like that. The program I used is called "FAT32Format 1.12"
