3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Affordable

Cons: Doesn't last

Other Thoughts: Bought in October 2010, just died today, January 2013. Barely over two years is not so good. Meanwhile, my Rosewill dock is chugging along fine...

5 out of 5 eggsWork Great

Pros: Works great. White. Easy power button. Solid power and usb connection.

Cons: Does not have an included fan..

Other Thoughts: Am not able to test the usb 3.0 connection on this device however it preforms quite well. Have had it on copying TB worth of data over the past several days without any loss of connection.

Other reviews noted a SATA connection however this device is connected via USB. the NST-D300S3 works great and should holdup over time.

1 out of 5 eggsGood, when it works

Pros: White color, e-sata interface

Cons: Like other reviewers I have had trouble with the power switch (works randomly) and poor connectivity with the e-sata interface (doesn't always connect).

Other Thoughts: I am on the new egg site currently looking for a replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well with MacBooks

Pros: Quiet and cool. I've purchased several similar Vantec docks and have come to rely on their ability to provide a great interface between a bare drive an my MacBook Pros. Whether playing movies, ripping DVDs or using Time Machine for backups I like these units.

Cons: As others have noted, the cord included may be a weak link. Sorry but keep a spare USB cord on hand in case you start experiencing sudden disconnections.

Other Thoughts: Products like these are why I keep shopping at newegg. Keep it up, fellows.

1 out of 5 eggsCabbage

Pros: Nice pretty white color.

Cons: DOA.
Windows does not recognize the device. Sometimes I get a "Device Not Recognized" dialog and it shows up in device manager as an unrecognized device, sometimes I plug it in and nothing happens.
Nothing. Doesn't even show up in device manager.
No support options on Vantec's website. The product page doesn't have a drivers download. There's a really well hidden firmware update on their FAQ page that supposedly applies to a bunch of their products, but it doesn't help with this one.
I e-mail Vantec tech support and have received not so much as an automated acknowledgement as of a week later.

Other Thoughts: The Colts really ate it this year, no?

Manufacturer Response:

I'm sorry to hear that something may be wrong with your hard drive dock. We do provide a one year warranty from the date of purchase on your product. So please contact support@vantecusa.com for further assistance.

3 out of 5 eggsNot a bad value, but DO NOT TRUST the included cable

Pros: -Cheap
-Fast (when using USB 3.0)
-Convenient (takes both kinds of SATA drives)

Cons: -Included cable is absolute garbage, causes random disconnections when using USB 3.0

Other Thoughts: Not a bad device for the money but I can see why people rate these poorly. I had massive random disconnection problems with the unit, I flashed the firmware in it and everything.... but I just so happened to have a spare USB 3.0 extension cable laying around. (Ironically enough, also made by Vantec) After I swapped out the short cable with the 6 footer, everything worked fine, no more disconnections.

The biggest way they could improve this unit is by not including the garbage cable. At least then the consumer wouldn't be mislead into believing that it would work properly with that cable @ USB 3.0 speeds.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Dock

Pros: I've been using this with my 2 and 1 TB drives while switching between computers and its very sturdy as well as secure for the drive. Plus USB 3.0 and its a steady connection.

Cons: The only issue is it feels like pushing the eject "button" will pop the hard drive out to much if i slam it.

1 out of 5 eggsDisconnects - Can't finish a copy

Pros: USB 3.0

Cons: Worked a couple of times but now constantly drops the connection in the middle of a copy. I couldn't keep it connected long enough to copy a 10 gb file. At first I thought it was the UCB 3.0 card I had installed but now it does the same thing connected to the usb 2.0 ports.

Just bought a thermaltake, I'll see how that works. When I bougt this Vantec, it was the only one on the market. Now there is competition, I would stay away from this one.
