1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Looks Cool, slim design

Cons: The internal carriage in no way fits the outside case. Disasembly is required to install your SSD. I found the internal parts jammed and stuck. It took some finesse and persuasion in the way of yanking to remove the carriage. The circuit board seemed bent and misaligned.

When attempting to install my SSD I found the internals to stick half way in. After trying various ways of trying to insert the carriage i found I could not remove the carriage (I latter found the backing screws to limit the SSD from fully inserting). I tried inserting the SSD on the recommended guide tracks, above the tracks and below the tracks. There was no configuration that made the tolerances between the case and the SSD appear to work in a way the designers intended.

The parts seem misaligned. The internal machining of this design leads me to believe that my specific piece is one of many that will have this problem.

Other Thoughts: I wish I ordered a different case

2 out of 5 eggsRequires 2 USB Ports

Pros: inexpensive. easy to assemble.

Cons: requires 2 usb ports to work.

Other Thoughts: This drive requires the use of 2 USB ports to function. Most laptops I am familiar with don't come with more than 2 such ports, so if you need a port for something else plus whatever is stored on this drive, you are out of luck. I would not be annoyed about this if the description mentioned this requirement, and if the photo of the included cable wasn't misleading (even zoomed in I cannot locate the second device-end of the cable).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
We try hard to provide our customer with the best service. As for your question about using 2 USB port, if the hard drive in the enclosure is drawing more power than 1 USB port can provide on your computer, you will need to use two USB port connection for your drive to work correctly. We provided the Y USB cable for that purpose. If you have questions about our products, please feel free to write to us for assistance at support@vantecusa.com. Thank you for looking into our products. We do value your patronage.
Best Regards, Vantec

1 out of 5 eggsLimited USB 3.0

Pros: None......unreliable crashing even with USB 2.0

Only 13 bucks.

Cons: USB 3.0 does not work with AMD based HP laptop.
USB 3.0 does not work with QNAP TS-120 NAS.

Crashes during middle of transfers..

Spent a few hours diagnosing when all I wanted was plug and play.

13 bucks down the drain.

Other Thoughts: pssstt......hey Vantec...why not use a chip inside this unit hat works with all SS USB 3.0 controllers? The AS2105 in this unit is flakey and appears to be a no show.

My Seagate Expansion portable USB 3.0 works with everything I connect to.

I could spend even more time rma, shipping, etc..etc...etc.. but I've had enough of this steaming pile of brown boneless.

1 out of 5 eggsforget it

Pros: Looks great

Cons: The milled slot the drive slides along binds and is useless. These enclosures are junk.

Other Thoughts: I have had four of these. One currently works. One failed after installation of the SSD. Two broke while attempting to slide the carrier into the case.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Holds a 9.5mm drive securely.
Solid construction
Good transfer speeds (more about these later)

Cons: A lip on the case prevents the USB from plugging in all the way, resulting in an unstable connection. I had to use a razor blade to bevel the rubber on the top of the USB plug, allowing it to plug in all the way. After the modification, the connection is solid.

The main IC chip got quite hot when formatting the HDD through USB 2.0. I would not run a drive without the metal sleeve, which seems to act like a heatsink. I do wonder about longevity due to this if it gets even hotter under heavy use through USB 3.0 or USB 3.0 with a SSD. That would be very unusual use for most people, though.

The metal sleeve is very difficult to remove even after taking out the screws. This requires patience and makes this drive impractical for swapping drives. If you need to regularly swap drives, you may want to get a 2.5" Mobile Backplane for a desktop PC instead of this.

Other Thoughts: I wanted an external drive with a high-quality drive.
I put a 7200RPM 750GB WD Black into this.

In a USB 2.0 slot, the speed is bottle-necked at 25-35MB/s by the USB 2.0 transfer speeds..
In a USB 3.0 slot my HDDs bottleneck the speed. I don't have any SSDs to test whether the enclosure ever becomes the bottleneck.

4 out of 5 eggsBought 2, 1 Bad

Pros: The one that works runs like mad. Works quite well, so far flawlessly.

Cons: 1 pretty much DOA. Would not load, but drive spun up.

Other Thoughts: Would've given 4 stars but since I had to RMA one, it lost an egg.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Product

Pros: Nice aluminum case.
Good value.

Cons: Second one I ordered would not allow hard drive to slide all the way in.

Other Thoughts: I liked the first one I ordered so much I ordered a second one and would have rated 5 eggs. But after receiving the second one I found that the screws holding the opposite end were too long to allow the "caddy" to slide completely in. I ended up having to grind the flanges of the caddy back by about 3/8" to get the drive all the way in. Maybe I'm being generous but I'm still giving 4 eggs. It still seems like a solid product when put together.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic & Bulletproof

Pros: Fast on 3.0, tough case material, seems to be very robust

Cons: slightly heavy if thats important to you

Other Thoughts: I am a full time bicycle tourist and this takes a lot of abuse in my panniers and has performed flawlessly. This is my 3rd enclosure in 6 months and the 1st NexStar all the others have failed. I use a SSD so drives are not a problem . I will absolutly look to this brand first from now on
