4 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: Solid build quality, esata and usb 3.0, fast transfer speeds and low temps with a WD Green drive. Rubber feet on right side add the option to lay the enclosure down horizontally.

Cons: Power cable is too short, I have to place the drive on top of my tower instead of beside my monitor on my desk where I'd prefer it due to the length of the power cable.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Enclosure

Pros: Very solid enclosure with multiple connection types (esata, usb 3.0). Worked with my 4TB HGST drives out of the box. Installation of the drive was straight forward. The fact that the enclosure is all aluminum makes it heavy, but also good for heat dissipation.

Cons: The only issue I have had with it is that it would sometimes drop from the system under Windows 7 using the ESATA connection after several hours of copies. I was backing up data and upgrading my system from Win7 to Win8.1 and it would disappear without warning during long copies. I was able to get my data off eventually, but would require me "pinging" the drive by selecting a folder or file that accessed the data (not cached) periodically. I had the drives set to never sleep or "save power" so it wasn't that.

It worked flawlessly for days under windows 8.1 so I suspect its a driver issue with Windows 7 so I am not removing an egg for the enclosure.

Other Thoughts: I was worried initially that it wouldn't handle the 4TB drive, but there were no issues at all with my drive. I have used it in USB2 and ESATA modes - have not tried USB3.0 since my motherboard doesn't support it.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly what I expected for my mony

Pros: Works fine with both USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and eSATA. Most of my older equipment has eSATA, so get pretty good transfer speeds with this drive all around.

Cons: Some buyers complain that it is hard to see how the power plugs into the unit. It's counter-intuitive. There is a little tiny diagram in the user manual that shows you how.

5 out of 5 eggsVantec enclosure

Pros: Power attachment and supply appears overbuilt. Metal case and drive slide holds drive securely. No fan, but not the metal will conduct heat. Bought 2 and would purchase again without hesitation. Only 1 TB drives now enclosed but later 3 TB drives will be traded out of base computer and into these. Only using SATA, don't have USB3 motherboard.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with 3TB Drive!

Pros: Works with my 3TB Drive, several other containers say this, and don't really. This one saw my Seagate Barracuda 3TB no problem!

Cons: Not a tool-free design. This is very clear from the description of course, but I own several other enclosures that are tool-less and it's amazing that they are not all these days. This one isn't too bad however, I've used worse for certain but keep this in mind if you are going to be swapping drives in and out with any frequency. You use 2-4 screws to screw in the drive to a slide in chassis then use 2 screws on the outside to lock it all up. There's also a little ribbon cable you have to attach for the front panel LED when sliding in the chassis and it's not clear which side it pin 1 the 1st time you assemble it.

Other Thoughts: The front blue LED is a little bright and annoying, so don't connect the ribbon cable if you don't like that sort of thing. The packaging it comes in is pretty nice for this type of thing, not that it helps anything, but impressive, and all the cables feel good quality. The overall look is pretty good, it's feels solid and overall nice looking, especially the side w/o the big logo on it! I'd totally buy another one, unless I found a cheaper tool-less one!

5 out of 5 eggsLooks good, Feels solid

Pros: Solid extruded aluminum body, no exposed sharp edges. Glossy surface is not a fingerprint magnet like I had feared. LED cable is sleeved to guard against snagging during assembly. Included stand fits snugly. Power supply has its own status LED. Included USB3 and eSATA cables feel well-made and are of heavier gauge than others I have seen.

Cons: Power supply may interfere with adjacent outlets (It extends significantly to the left if the ground pin is down.)

Other Thoughts: I have only been in possession of the unit for less than a day, but have owned similar units in the past, and it has a high build quality. While sitting idle unit stays cool (WD Red 4TB drive installed.)
Unless something goes wrong with this unit, I would definitely buy this again.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Fast USB 3.0

Pros: The USB 3.0 makes this a very fast way to back up your data. Easy 6 screw installation (4 to secure the drive, and 2 to secure the cover plate) took me all of 5 minutes. Sturdy metal design. ON/OFF switch. Has its own power adapter. USB 3.0 and eSATA cables included.

Cons: Minus 1 star for the following: The 3-pin power wire to connect the front light to the circuit board is not clearly labeled as to which way it should be oriented. I got lucky, and got it right on the first try, before installing the two screws that hold the cover plate. The USB 3.0, eSATA, and power adapter cords are only about 3 feet long, which may be a problem for some. The power connector is a 4-pin DIN, and is not clearly marked for proper orientation, meaning that you COULD plug it in wrong. The instructions show you the proper orientation, so READ THE DIRECTIONS.

Other Thoughts: If your computer does not have USB 3.0, you can do as I did and install a USB 3.0 expansion (pci-express 1.0) card into your motherboard. If your laptop/netbook has only USB 2.0 you will not get the full speed of this device, but at its current price, it is still worth it, as you may buy a device in the future that supports USB 3.0. Until then, you can use eSATA (if your device supports it) to get better speed than USB 2.0

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy to setup. USB 3.0 and SATA outputs, and can be set up both vertically with enclosed stand, or horizontally with included rubber feet.

Cons: On/Off switch on the bottom

Other Thoughts: Took me about 10 minutes to install a WD 1TB drive. Just slipped it in and made the connection. Had it up and running in no time. Currently I am only using USB 2.0 but it seems to run quiet, fast and doesn't get hot. I like the fact that you can use it upright with the enclosed stand or lay it down on its side, since there are four rubber feet on one side.
Since I have it on the stand, it is a bit, not much, of a nuisance to power it on with the on/off switch on the bottom. Other than that is a durable and I will continue to purchase Vantec for my external enclosures.

5 out of 5 eggsReview of Vantec Nexstar Enclosure

Pros: Everything works great with this Enclosure. Backup Transfer Speed comparable to the Vantec Nexstar Hard Drive Duplicator/Dock when Backup of Windows 8.1 with an 86 GB System Image completed in 8 Seconds with Usb 3.0 Superspeed. Using a 2TB Seagate Hybrid Drive.

Cons: NONE to report

Other Thoughts: Screws are in a little tiny clear plastic bag. NOT a problem but be sure NOT to misplace or lose them. There is a little cable you must connect to the front lights when you install the Hard Drive!! So be sure to plug it correctly in according to the directions on the plate the drive sits on.

5 out of 5 eggsWork great, still faster on esata

Pros: These enclosures work great! I got 2 of them for backup purposes and they're extremely high quality.

They're made of solid metal and feel like they could take a good beating and still protect the harddrive!

Esata is still producing much faster speeds for me over usb 3.0, however that could be because my computer does not have native usb 3.0 ports and I'm having to run the enclosure off a orico pcie to usb3.0 card.

I'm seeing around 90 mB/s across usb3.0 and around 160 mB/s across esata with a brand new seagate 2tB drive in the enclosure!

Cons: None
