5 out of 5 eggsOne of the best external enclosures

Pros: Supports 6TB drives;
supports Mac OS X sleep;
keeps drive cool;
dual (USB 3.0, eSATA) interface;
fan switch
very reliable for my use as backup

Cons: Front blue LED is very, very bright;
not stackable.

Other Thoughts: I own three of these Vantec enclosures. In the latest purchase, I put a WD60EZRX in it to use as a TimeMachine backup drive. It has worked flawlessly, as have the previous two over the two years that I owned them. All are used as backup drives and I have had zero reliability problems with any.

The activity LED is very bright, as mentioned in other reviews. The fan is very quiet, at least to my ears.

I wish the units were stackable.

Overall, I am very happy with this enclosure.

2 out of 5 eggsIncompatible With My Motorola PVR

Pros: It's pretty. It seems well made. Nice quiet fan. Every feature you would want on an external drive.

Cons: Doesn't play nice with my Motorola PVR. The blue light on the front of the enclosure is bright enough, and flashes wildly enough, to cause problems for a person with epilepsy. This is not a joke...

1 out of 5 eggsWorthless

Pros: They will fit in my garbage can.

Cons: I ordered 4, a bit concerned about the fan issues in the other reviews.

1- worked
1- the fan worked only if I took a can of compressed air to get the fan spinning
2- did not work AT ALL, the light would come on but the HD's were not recognized by disk mgmt. And yes, I've been doing this stuff since 1982.

All had brand new/working/tested Seagate 2TB ST2000DM001.

For the 2 non working ones I tried usb3 and esata in 2 different PC's. I could try to "troubleshoot" some more, but, uh, it's supposed to work... ;-)

Anyway, since I already broke down the boxes and put in recycle, and I wanted to back up my NAS boxes by today, I'm just upset and throwing the whole lot in the trash.

I just ordered 4 Thermaltake Max 5G Active Cooling HD Enclosures from somewhere else.

Onward,

Other Thoughts: Nope, think that covers it.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks OK now !

Pros: I had purchased a similar enclosure, but in a different config. It has run just fine. Well I this one and started experiencing read errors and figured it must of been a hard drive issue. I RMA the 1tb WD black hard drive, received the replacement, and guess what ? Still had read errors after you wrote data to the drive. I had to RMA the enclosure, because it had to been their problem. Received the replacement and its beens running for the last month with no problems.

Cons: I really don't have any cons, other than having to RMA the unit with Vantec. I must of have been just a defective unit.

Other Thoughts: Would I recommend this enclosure, yes I would. It works great (Just like the other one).

5 out of 5 eggsWorth the money

Pros: Solid. Easy to assemble and disassemble -- only two screws need to be manipulated. Fits hard drives of all sizes, both fat ones (e.g. WD) and thin ones (e.g. Seasonic).

Cons: Annoyingly bright blue light on the front.

Other Thoughts: Splurge and buy this enclosure instead of one of the cheaper ones (*cough* Rose**** *cough*). You'll be happy with the purchase due to its ergonimics, features and reliability.

3 out of 5 eggsFront LED Strip Annyoing

Pros: Fair price, functional as per specs, quiet fan.

Cons: somewhat insecure HD internal mounting. No screws, uses firm foam for friction/compression fit. Hard drive is stuck in place, but I would prefer screws.

Other Thoughts: Blue LED strip on front is really bright and annoying. flashes during HD operation.

1 out of 5 eggsFan DOA

Pros: nice construction, 2 screws to take cover off, tooless hd install

Cons: right off the bat the fan doesn't work, yes, there is a switch but doesn't do anything

Other Thoughts: why can't anyone make a decent hd enclosure? the past 3 I've gotten either don't work or don't work for long. This is for extra storage on a dvr so it doesn't get moved at all once installed . Will return this one and try another one I guess. Come on, not that hard.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid enclosure

Pros: Ports work as needed. Active cooling switch is cool, but not needed since completely silent. Fan is needed for drives 2TB and up anyway. Great investment so far. Vantec has come a long way.

Cons: Didnt power on the first time. Took everything apart and put it back together and been flawless since. I cleaned some dirt off circuit board. How did it get there?!

Other Thoughts: One of the better looking enclosures. Too bad it takes from the WD My Book (aka hunks of garbage) look, couldve been more original.

4 out of 5 eggsWas wrong about USB 3.0 speeds

Pros: USB 3.0 speeds are good on this drive. I wrote a previous review stating that USB 3.0 speeds were at USB 2.0 speeds. This is incorrect, as some of my usb "3.0" ports provided by ASMEDIA are not operating at full speed it looks like.

Cons: Blue light cannot be turned off at will.

Other Thoughts: A great drive enclosure.

2 out of 5 eggsGood Engineering, Slow USB3.0 speeds

Pros: Great build quality, Quiet fan, 2Amp power supply, Supports Greater than 2tb drives over USB for Apple Airport Extreme (5th gen)

Cons: USB 3.0 speeds are about as fast as any other USB 2.0 drive enclosure. Don't spend extra money on this thinking you will get USB 3.0 transfer speeds.

Other Thoughts: Benchmarks with Blackmagic Disk speed test:

3tb Seagate ST30000DM
ESATA:

168.5MB/s write
177.4MB/s read

USB "3.0":
29.0MB/s Write
33.7MB/s Read
