5 out of 5 eggsWorks great. Good price.

Pros: Works great. USB 3.0 speeds - 85 to 100 MBps. USB cable that came with it was way too short. Replaced with 6 ft USB 3.0, no problems. I had an older SATA II drive that would constantly drop. SMART data indicated that the drive had issues. Never had issues with this drive when inside computer. So it seems like usimg a drive in this USB 3.0 environment will expose drives that have issues and they should be retired. Fitted unit with 4 brand new Seagate 3 TB drives and they are all flying! No drops. Perfect.

Cons: It could have more NAS type features. But for the price/performance, it's hard to beat.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Enclosure

Pros: Super easy to install drives, quiet, small, inexpensive.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04, using the drives via USB3. I currently have 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB installed, and will be adding a 3TB drive to the mix as well. Transfer speeds are pretty much what you'd expect from USB 3. Transfer between drives is a bit slower than going from internal SATA to external USB3, but it still hits between 60-80MB/s between drives in the enclosure. Drives just showed up as one would expect after moving them from the computer's case to the enclosure. I had the drives mapped by their UUID, so the system mounted and used them exactly as if they were still inside the computer.

I'll be picking up a second one of these for sure.

Cons: None so far.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, inexpensive cases

Pros: Good case. Inexpensive. Reliable. Pretty. Black.

Holds four drives. Newegg description only says "up to 3TB", but it definitely works with 4TB drives. (Larger than that, I don't have any idea.) So you could get a total of at least 16TB in here (4x 4TB).

Easy to install or remove drives (no tools or internal cables needed; they just slide and plug in).

Has a physical power switch (rocker style). This is nice; I hate having to power off electronics by unplugging them.

Nice placement of power/USB3/eSATA plugs and power switch.

LEDs show which drive bays are on (and one for the entire unit), and there's dark enough translucent plastic over them that they aren't annoyingly bright -- visible but slightly subtle. Very nice, actually.

Cons: Of the three enclosures, at least two, if not three, have slight rattling from the fan bracket. I even took one apart and verified that the fan itself is fine -- very smooth and quiet; it's something in the housing or bracket (how the fan is mounted in the top of the enclosure) that rattles a little bit. At first, it's a bit unnerving, because it sounds like the fan itself is rattling and might break; but it really is just the brackets. If you push down a little bit on the bracket in the right place, the rattling stops. Since mine are on a long cable in the closet, it isn't noticeable enough to me to try to fix; but if it were out on/under my desk, it would be annoying. This is the main reason I gave it 4 eggs instead of 5 -- I think it would annoy most people unless they found a way to fix it. For my own use, since they're in the closet, I'd probably rank it more around 4.8 eggs.

There's a _minor_ difficulty in getting the drives out; they generally hold in too tightly to just tip it or get a grip on the end with your fingers. You _want_ them to hold in that well most of the time, but you can't really reach in to get a grip to pull them back out. You should technically not need tools, but you might actually need a flathead screwdriver to *gently* pry the drive outward to get it to unplug.

Other Thoughts: Fans have a manual dial to adjust their speed. I consider that a pro; others may consider it a con (since it's not automatic).

I have three of these with identical setups. I use one as my main volume and two as backups (using Time Machine). I rotate off-site each week.

I'm using two 2TB drives and one 4TB drive in each enclosure. The drives are striped into a single 8TB volume. I'm using them with a 2011 Mac Mini. (Note that the striping is software RAID through the OS; this is not on-board RAID. Vantec has an almost identical enclosure that adds on-board RAID for about $20 more, but this model does not have that.)

Since my Mini doesn't have USB3, it's using them as USB2, even though the enclosure and my cables all support USB3. I was anticipating using it with a newer machine with USB3, and I will eventually. USB2 makes it slow to do an initial file when copying multiple TBs of files, but for day-to-day use and incremental backups, it's ok. I can easily run 1080p (full HD) video from it -- even multiple streams. The computer's USB2 is definitely the limitation here, not the enclosure.

I initially had a few instances that many people on all operating systems had, where one or more drives would drop off unexpectedly and then come back, causing problems. From what I've seen and heard, I think this was primarily a problem with the USB3 chipset and how the operating systems used it. They gradually dropped off, and I haven't had one of those errors in probably almost a year. I think the operating system updates gradually fixed the problem. I used to be on MacOSX 7.x, and recently upgraded to 9.x. No problems yet using 9.x -- and not even with more recent updates on 7.x. Since I think this was an OS problem and haven't had the problem in a long time, I'm not counting it against this product at all.

1 out of 5 eggshard disk is not turning on

Pros: Very convenient when transfering files between hard disk.

Cons: When I got the Vantec Quad Bay, I immediately connect it to the computer. At first, on indicator is on but hard disk and led indicator of the hard disk didn't turn on. On the second try it works. I thought it was already ok. But when time goes by, hard disk is getting harder and harder to turn on. but now hard disk & indicator light won't turn on, but on indicator light is on. I choose Vantec expecting to have a product that is superior to others, but was wrong.

2 out of 5 eggsBe wary if you value your drives

Pros: 4 Drives , up To 3 Tb each , eSata 6Gbp/s, fast as can be for an external unit love the speed. Perfect solution for storage on a to-go basis. It does it's job and then some , can't really speak for the USB3.0/2.0 sides of it since i prefer eSata and being able to hot-swap the drives " which if you try to do while using it as a USB device causes the drives to cycle."

My System:
Antec 1200 Gaming Case
ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z
AMD FX-9590
Cooler Master Eisberg 240l
16GB Corsair Vengeance
EVGA GTX 780 SC 3gb x 2 " Using EVGA Pro SLI Bridge "
Creative Recon3d Fatality Professional
Samsung 840Pro SSD 128gb "System Drive"
Western Digital Black 3tb "game drive"
Corsiar AX1200 " PSU "

Vantec HX4 "with 4x2tb Seagates"
Icy Dock Quad-bay "with 4x2tb WD blacks"
Both running eSata

Cons: I was running 4x2Tb Western Digital Blacks in both mentioned units! HOT , Drives are running anywhere from 45-55 Celsius Under Load in the Vantec NST-640SU3-BK. Decided to crack it open , thought maybe the fan or cooling fins might be dusty, Guess what the drives are completely surrounded by PLASTIC with no metal contact for heat dispersion , that fancy Aluminum outer casing ? yeah it's just for looks. If you Value your drives pay the extra money and get the Icy Dock or something similar. My ICY DOCK "MB561US-4SB-1 runs the same drives @ 30-40 Celsius under load.

Other Thoughts: The eSata cable that came with mine may have been damaged since i couldn't hit 6gbp/s speed with it, no biggie i have spares.

2 out of 5 eggsWATCH OUT !

Pros: Easy to mount drives. Adjustable fan speed. Speed was very good. Runs very cool with WD green HDD's.

Cons: Very minor noise from fan that exhausts through the top. Good for cooling efficiency but bad for people who sit things on it.

Other Thoughts: The unit does NOT let the computer address the drives as true individual drives. It would not let Windows Home Server 2011 address the drives as individual drives (I wanted to create a soft RAID 5). The item was returned ($15 shipping on me) and I ordered a NexStar HX4 which sets up a hard RAID that has worked for me.

5 out of 5 eggsone year +

Pros: Flawless. I'm a torrent hound and I've stored 8 TB of data in this NAS. No problems. Running WD black and green.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: A 160 fan on top would have been better and quieter. It's not noisy unless you get like 5 ft. in a quite room and it's working hard.

4 out of 5 eggsUbuntu Linux with raid

Pros: - Cools great once you up the fan speed. 52-55 degrees C. on all drives
- USB3 and Esata both work
- Units continue to work under high IO stress
- Each unit has a 4-disk aidz pool and I get 140 MB/sec write speed.

Cons: - USB3 JMicron controller on unit does not work well with linux. It spins drives down as soon as there's no USB connection and unfortunately, the computer can't wake them up on its own since it doesn't see past the USB hub/bridge. I had to unplug and plug them back in to turn them on. ie, drives didn't persist through a reboot. Lots of research showed the problem was in the JMicro controller and would probably get a firmware update soon to fix it. I switched to esata instead and everything works beautifully. (really, USB3 shouldn't be used anyway if you want rock-solid production-quality stability)

Other Thoughts: - I wish the bottom of the cylinder was open so I could stack the units. I own multiples and they take up a lot of surface area because you can't stack them.

2 out of 5 eggsMust Perform Firmware Upgrade to Stop Disconnecting Issue

Pros: Once firmware upgrade was performed it seems to be working well so far.

Cons: Look for the review by Anonymous on 5/7/2013 9:08:22 AM - doing this was the ONLY way this thing would stop disconnecting while I was copying several TB's of data.
