5 out of 5 eggsLove it so far.

Pros: Easy to use. Easy to install drives and set up. Fan operates well and keeps drives cool at maximum use.

Cons: Sorta loud. But for the function and the price, it's not so bad. Software is crude, but gets the job done. Dip switches serve no purpose what so ever. Raid config must be set up via software.

Other Thoughts: I've had this unit for about 6 weeks now. I love this little thing. It gets the job done.
Shipping was ridiculously awesome. I ordered at like 2pm and got it the next day. Props to new egg for being on their game with processing orders.

Out of the box, the construction and design of the box is cool. The aluminum exterior gives it a strong feel. The drives are super easy to install. The fan works well, and it's nice to have the fan speed potentiometer on it too. The drives are always cool. The case design was well thought out, as far as cooling was concerned.

The software is crude, and annoying at times. Often at times you load the software and it says no Raid found, which is annoying. I also found that the dip switch on the side to set the Raid config is useless. You need to set the config up in the software. Minor thing, maybe, but I'm confused why they would put them there if they don't do anything. To make it look cool I guess? I don't know.

All in all, I think i'll be ordering another one of these. The functionality you get for the price is unbeatable. Great experience so far. I use it for my photography business to back up my working set of photos. So i'm constantly using this and pulling data from it. Works great for my needs. Happy customer.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect RAID 10 HDD Array

Pros: I have had this Enclosure for quite awhile now. No problems with it on normal use. I have kept it in RAID 10 and is normally on 24/7

Cons: Fan isn't quite as strong as I would like. When HDD's are on heavy use it does get fairly warm but nothing dangerous for the HDD's. Overall happy with purchase

5 out of 5 eggsEasy Set Up

Pros: This NAS box is easy to setup. The cooling fan is adjustable so it can be set low if the box is used only for backup or low usage. It has both eSata and USB 3.0/2.0. I have used on both and prefer the USB 3.0 connection. It can be used for individual drives, RAID or JBOD where all are merged together as one. I use them as individual. The parts are easy to install but are loose in the box, probably should be in a single bag.

Cons: Parts are loose in the box, can be missed if you don't look everywhere.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat features for the price

Pros: Nice unique design that looks good and performs well. I have two now and both are working well. The first had a few hiccups getting set up but I figured it out digging more through the documentation. One unit has 4 x WD Red 4TB drives in a RAID 5 array to back up a RAID 6 system. Transfers are around 110MB/s read, writing is a bit slower but still around 90MB/s. Once the pecularities where figured out, it set up fairly easily. See my WD Red review for problems I had with those.

Cons: Documentation is ok but not clear to follow. I had droppouts like others did but I figured out it was my USB 3.0 cable and case plug (the USB 3.0 cable is a poor design). Used cardboard to jam cable forcing better connection. Problems stopped after that. Not an issue with the Vantec box, but many people are citing problems that are related to other hardware and not the Vantec design.

Other Thoughts: Once I got these going, I have been very happy. Hope they make a RAID 6 version with more than 4 drives sometime.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

Pros: Easy to mount drives. Adjustable fan speed. Supports RAID. Speed is very good. Runs very cool with WD green HDD's.

Cons: Very minor noise from fan that exhausts through the top. Good for cooling efficiency but bat for people who sit things on it.

Other Thoughts: I returned a NexStar HX4 because it would not let Windows Home Server 2011 address the drives as individual drives (I wanted to create a soft RAID 5). NewEgg determined that it was my mistake and I had to pay the $15 return shipping.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad, has limitations

Pros: JMicron hardware RAID controller; lets you use the JMicron management software. Looks cool. Adjustable fan is a plus. Works well with various RAID configurations. Plenty fast; I'm getting a solid 170+ MBps read and write in a 3x3TB RAID5 configuration over eSATA to a Celeron G1820.Makes me wish I had gotten a mobo with dual-gigabit ports.

Cons: Initially had problems with random disconnects(eSATA on WHS 2011 on a B85 mobo), but I replaced the eSATA cable and changed the WD Green drives to Red and it's been stable ever since, so beware if you're not using 24/7 drives. Also has no hot spare functionality, which I find disappointing (especially since the controller used supports the feature).

Other Thoughts: Generally a good unit. I debated using this attached to a mini-ITX WHS box versus a dedicated NAS box for about the same total cost. Ended up going with this because the Marvell (or even Atom) CPUs on those boxes can't seem to keep up with the performance from a dedicated Haswell box.

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleastantly surprised, given the cost

Pros: Very easy to set up, instructions crystal clear.
Looks nice
Adjustable fan
Getting 100-130 MBps xfers on USB 3.0

I am only using it as a JBOD, so I can't comment of the RAID capabilities.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Need recessed screws for the disks. Not a big deal, I just didn't have any and they are not supplied.

5 out of 5 eggsLOVE LOVE LOVE

Pros: External Raid enclosure with fan & dip switch configuration (though i ended up doing my via the gui).

Several drive options including a normal mode, which will allow your system to address each hard drive you have in the enclosure as a separate drive (just note that your still traveling through a single connection so using each drive as an individual with yield slower speeds).

Fan has a controller on it to fine tune the noise & temp control.

very compact if you as me. ( for having a controller & fan built in)

USB install very clean on my 2012 R2 Essentials box & with the gui installed, i'm able to setup the device and gain some extra features (like email notification support, SMART readings, firmware upgrades )

Cons: I never like saying anything is perfect, but i aint taking any eggs away.

1. I like the "idea" of how the hard drives go in but i wish the caddy would go to at least half way on the hard drive (to the middle screw). It would put a tighter hold on the drive.

2. WHY is the esata only 3Gbps while the USB is 5Gbps?!? I guess i would only use the sata connection should i require to upgrade a firmware on an internal hard drive..

3. For me i would imagine a min length of 3ft for the usb would more ideal for end users.

Other Thoughts: I dont have speed results because i'm running this in JOBD mode with 4 WD Green drives (3tb, 2tb & 2x 1tbs). This is running a 2nd copy of my data running on 4 x 3tb Seagate NAS drives. Though my potential main storage is 12tb i'm only using about 4.5tb so as my size increases i will replace the Green drives accordingly.

So your wonder why i'm running a raid 0 then a JOBD system, you can email me at evil homer clone for details BUT in short, with the magic of Vmware, i'm able to directly attach a "USB" drive to a vm and have that vm license to backup to a "unlimited data" cloud service.. ALL from a single pc which saves me a great deal of money when it comes to running cost.

So should my raid 0 fail, i have a local copy to restore from and should i have a disaster at home (fire, theft, surge) i have a full copy in the cloud. ;)

5 out of 5 eggsI love this thing

Pros: RAID, esata, USB 3.0. Transfers around 130mb/s on RAID 5 with 4x Seagate 2TB hard drives. I got a 6 TB backup drive now.

Cons: None so far.

1 out of 5 eggsAArggh!

Pros: Pfos: None that I could find, although if the thing worked being able to select the various raid states and bing able to select individual mode to ahve all four disks available would be nice.....but the thing does not work......but Ii think thats a con

Cons: ConsL This silly machine will connect to my iMac for a short time, varying from a few minutes to a few hours, and then loses track of its disks which disappear from the desktop. Certainly NOT a behavior you want from a backup device.

Don't believe that their support will help. I called their phone support line and was told to change the usb cable and restart my iMac, which I had already done. No further suggestions of help.

I then emailed their support line TWICE in ten days and received not even a whisper of response. My thought is that they are having so many problems with this beast that their main response is to ignore them.

Other Thoughts: Actually this my second hx4r. The first sample arrived completely non-functional and Newegg promptly RMA'd it. Who would believe that two samples of the same model would be problematic? That just stretches the laws of probability.

Vantech management here's a suggestion for you that has been used since the start of the computer revolution. It's called BURN-IN. It has the advantage of not losing customers to inferior merchandise.

Someone please ask if I'll give any more of my hard earned money to vantec. Answer: Not without being beat about the head and shoulders first
