4 out of 5 eggsGreat unit!

Pros: 4x configuration lots of Raid options
Fan can be controlled!

Cons: The 80mm fan is not the best as far as noise
on full blast its louder then my 120 and 140mm fans (idle) in my case that are load driven

Other Thoughts: So, had this unit for a while in RAID 10, with old but proven drives.

The drivers are few old ones that I was not using anymore for a few years, and had about 5 of them, so this was perfect to create RAID10 and have good portable backup system (bought about 1 year ago)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB 7200 16MB cache

Esata was maxed at 100MB/s I believe, which USB3.0 gave better results as you can see, my results are due to old drives but still good

strange how my writes are better, which is perfect since most time I am backing up and writing stuff.

The design is not optimal for flow. Top bottom air setup is not good for drives that are right in the path of the flow, if the drives were sideways then maybe it would work fine top bottom, but not sure if life of HD's is less if they are designed to be in used in flat setup. Desktop towers have best flow design from the front intake fans.

They could have went with a left right approach, possibly dual low profile 80mm one on top one on bottom creating a flow of left to right (horizontal one) and having vents on opposite side along on top

The air would at least go through and between the drives extracting the heat.

Big plus is the info at the software side especially the advanced settings.

For this price I would give this unit 3.5-3.9 out of 5

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Device for the Price

Pros: Quiet, nice look and features to set different RAID types. I am using 4 3TB WD red drives in a RAID 5. I have between 2-3 TB of movies, etc., I wanted to save. This allowed me to do that and provide room for growth if needed.

Cons: Wish the drive adapters were brushed aluminum like chassis, and the need for the more expensive NAS hard drives if you want to set up a RAID array (the drives aren't a requirement, but after a little research, regular desktop internal drives would probably drop unnecessarily from the array for errors on the drive and trigger a rebuild. If more than one dropped at a time, you lose the data.

Other Thoughts: Either buy your drives the same time as this or buy them first (if not already on hand). I didn't and had to wait for them to arrive to even turn on the device to see if it worked.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked perfectly, looks amazing!

Pros: I've gone through a number of HDD enclosures like this, mainly from Sans Digital. I kept having to replace them because the power supplies would burn out not long after the warranty expired. For the cost of having a replacement power supply shipped to me and the time to swap it out, it ends up being faster to order a new enclosure. I went with this one because my needs are pretty basic (JBOD configuration attached to a WHS 2011 server). The setup was a snap, I just swapped the drives into the enclosure, plugged in the eSATA and power cables, and it worked without a hitch. Some have commented that the fan is loud, but that doesn't match my experience. I couldn't hear the fan at all. I've got four 2TB drives in it currently, two WD Green, a Seagate, and a Samsung. All of them are working great and the transfer speeds are what you'd expect for eSATA (100MB/s). So far, it's performed swimmingly and the design is one of the more attractive I've seen for this type of device. Oh, and look closely in the box if you don't spot the screws for the HDDs. Someone reviewed one of these saying it did not come with them, but mine had them in a small baggie that was taped to the inside of the box. You'll only need eight of them (2 per drive), but my bag had nine in it. The drives are loaded into end covers that screw onto the drive on the sides, ensuring they seat perfectly upon insertion, then lock in place with a sliding plastic switch. It's a nifty design that ensures swapping out a drive is a pretty easy thing to do. As I said, I've not had much luck with HDD enclosures in the past, but if this one holds up for awhile , I'd definitely purchase another as a replacement. As for the LEDs on the front, you have a green power LED at the top, and four blue LEDs that represent the hard drives, aligned vertically down the center. All the lights are the same intensity, which is not too bright to be offensive in a home theater environment, nor so dim that you're unable to see drive activity that might be taking place.

Cons: I personally have had zero issues, but according to some other reviewers, there can be problems with things like loud fans and loose USB connections creating annoyance and performance problems. Hopefully those problems are rare, because I can tell you in all honesty, I'm extremely pleased with mine! If it holds up for a good length of time, you just can't beat what you get for the price.

Other Thoughts: I'd take a chance on this one. The design is a thing of beauty that needs to be witnessed firsthand, and if you do get a dud, at least you bought it from Newegg, so returning it shouldn't be any problem whatsoever.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Cheap!

Cons: Runs extremely hot that your drives will start to fail.

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your time with these. Absolute garbage! Cooling is horrible and it will kill your drives. Newegg gave me no fuss about the return.

3 out of 5 eggsTerrible Fan!!!

Pros: RAID, JBOD, USB3.0, and eSATA.

Cons: 80mm cooling fan noise and questionable speeds over USB/eSATA.

Other Thoughts: I love it. It looks great and does exactly what I needed it to do although I rarely average more than 45-75MB/sec over any of the included channels. However, from time to time, I get this "bearing" type noise from the cooling fan. It doesn't matter how fast it's running (slow or full)... The noise varies but is always there. A soft tap will usually stop it, but who wants to do that with a box containing HDD's that have numbers files that you are trying to back up? Fix the fan people! I would hate if this fan fails allowing my drives to die early!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS - Good Price - Fast Performance

Pros: Very easy to set up. Runs RAID 10 without any hick-ups. I'm using 4 - 3TB without issues. Setup in Windows , plugged into my 3.0USB port on my R7000 Nighthawk, works flawless as media NAS, nice to manually control the fan speed too.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsLove it so far.

Pros: Easy to use. Easy to install drives and set up. Fan operates well and keeps drives cool at maximum use.

Cons: Sorta loud. But for the function and the price, it's not so bad. Software is crude, but gets the job done. Dip switches serve no purpose what so ever. Raid config must be set up via software.

Other Thoughts: I've had this unit for about 6 weeks now. I love this little thing. It gets the job done.
Shipping was ridiculously awesome. I ordered at like 2pm and got it the next day. Props to new egg for being on their game with processing orders.

Out of the box, the construction and design of the box is cool. The aluminum exterior gives it a strong feel. The drives are super easy to install. The fan works well, and it's nice to have the fan speed potentiometer on it too. The drives are always cool. The case design was well thought out, as far as cooling was concerned.

The software is crude, and annoying at times. Often at times you load the software and it says no Raid found, which is annoying. I also found that the dip switch on the side to set the Raid config is useless. You need to set the config up in the software. Minor thing, maybe, but I'm confused why they would put them there if they don't do anything. To make it look cool I guess? I don't know.

All in all, I think i'll be ordering another one of these. The functionality you get for the price is unbeatable. Great experience so far. I use it for my photography business to back up my working set of photos. So i'm constantly using this and pulling data from it. Works great for my needs. Happy customer.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect RAID 10 HDD Array

Pros: I have had this Enclosure for quite awhile now. No problems with it on normal use. I have kept it in RAID 10 and is normally on 24/7

Cons: Fan isn't quite as strong as I would like. When HDD's are on heavy use it does get fairly warm but nothing dangerous for the HDD's. Overall happy with purchase

5 out of 5 eggsEasy Set Up

Pros: This NAS box is easy to setup. The cooling fan is adjustable so it can be set low if the box is used only for backup or low usage. It has both eSata and USB 3.0/2.0. I have used on both and prefer the USB 3.0 connection. It can be used for individual drives, RAID or JBOD where all are merged together as one. I use them as individual. The parts are easy to install but are loose in the box, probably should be in a single bag.

Cons: Parts are loose in the box, can be missed if you don't look everywhere.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat features for the price

Pros: Nice unique design that looks good and performs well. I have two now and both are working well. The first had a few hiccups getting set up but I figured it out digging more through the documentation. One unit has 4 x WD Red 4TB drives in a RAID 5 array to back up a RAID 6 system. Transfers are around 110MB/s read, writing is a bit slower but still around 90MB/s. Once the pecularities where figured out, it set up fairly easily. See my WD Red review for problems I had with those.

Cons: Documentation is ok but not clear to follow. I had droppouts like others did but I figured out it was my USB 3.0 cable and case plug (the USB 3.0 cable is a poor design). Used cardboard to jam cable forcing better connection. Problems stopped after that. Not an issue with the Vantec box, but many people are citing problems that are related to other hardware and not the Vantec design.

Other Thoughts: Once I got these going, I have been very happy. Hope they make a RAID 6 version with more than 4 drives sometime.
