5 out of 5 eggsVantec NexStar NST-DP100S3

Pros: Very good quality built item. The item worked as described. I went hard from the first day i received it and I was able to clone 10 drives with ease. The item's ability to clone a smaller drive to a larger drive and leave the remaining space available for recovery at a later time ensures that no disk space is wasted. The usb 3.0 is quite fast also. The Vantec NST-DP100S3 is the perfect machine for cloning and moving data around.

Cons: None at this time.

Other Thoughts: Great Machine!

1 out of 5 eggs512 byte vs 4KB sector

Pros: It easy to use. USB 3.0 support is great. The price is $47.99 is great as well.

Cons: This DOC only support 512byte sector and does not say it at a packaging. It is in a manual. As you know, NTFS default is 4KB sector and you are not able to see data with this doc. Windows always says it is not accessible and FORMAT.... I put this doc into a CLOSET now. It is not good for Windows user but it is good for Mac user.

2 out of 5 eggs512 vs 4k sectors

Pros: Drives showed up initially. Simple instructions. Seems plug and play. Comes with USB3.0 cord.

Cons: Can only read drives with 512 sectors. This is not mentioned in the specs. You will be asked to reformat any 4k drives you insert.

Other Thoughts: Drives showed up initially, but I had repeated formatting problems. All formatting attempts ( with a drive plugged into the enclosure) failed. A closer read through of the manual reveals that it only supports HDDs of 512 sectors. So all my 4k ( or default setting ) formats were failing.

I reformatted my external drives by attaching them internally, and set them to 512k. However, now when I plug in the newly formatted drive into the enclosure, it does not display properly. ( Drive shows up, but is not accessible ).

Due to the 512 limitation, I am not interested in fighting to get this enclosure to work. Low review score is based entirely on the fact that the 512 limitation is not spelled out ANYWHERE in the specs or description.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Works like it should. No need to boot up a spare pc with Clonezilla or other HDD Cloning software. Does it sector by sector and just works.

Cons: None that I have found yet.

5 out of 5 eggsWay Too Easy

Pros: Use lots of different backup and drive clone clone software but for a simple sector to sector copy, this is way to easy!

Cons: clone to larger drive leaves you with an extra partition Issue if only wanted one Partition. But re-sizing is a do-able workaround

5 out of 5 eggslove it

Pros: its USB 3.0 and supports HHDs as well as SSDs and the cloning function is amazing its a billion times simpler then using clonezilla. Plus you can use it to dock drivers and use them as extra storage out of your system. I actually cloned my 128 GB SSD to a 240 with little to no problems really (see other details)
I would recommend this its great

Cons: windows doesn't detect any drives in it with out a reboot

5 out of 5 eggsReliable, effective.

Pros: Easy to use, USB 3.0, super fast, works as advertised. I've taken it with me in a backpack lots of places, it has held up.

Cons: Wish it came with a longer USB 3.0 cable.

Other Thoughts: Cloned a full 1 TB hard drive from a platter drive to an SSD in about 20 minutes. Lightning quick, I was very pleased. Also, works great as a HDD dock. I've put countless 2.5" and 3.5" drives of every make, model, and capacities and this unit has ALWAYS worked. It's also held up after 12 months of toting it around with me. It works exactly as Newegg advertises it here, and I couldn't be happier. USB 3.0 cable that is included is short. But whatever, they're way too expensive right now anyway so I suppose I ought to feel lucky they gave me anything at all! There's no way these cables cost so much to manufacturer, we're getting raked over the coals on these cables. /rant

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Reliable.

Windows always recognises it's there even when resuming from Sleep mode.

Accepts both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drives. They can be HDDs or SSDs or hybrid SSHD, no problem.

Cloning feature is dead easy. Unplug USB cable, insert a drive in slot A and slot B. turn power switch on. Now drive in slot A will be cloned / copied onto drive in slot B.

Caveats: Drive in slot B must be equal to or greater capacity than drive in slot A. Existing data on drive in slot B will be overwritten by new data copied from drive in slot A.

Cons: none so far.

Other Thoughts: We have a 2TB Seagate HDD and a 3TB WD HDD inserted into this dock. They are used as external hard drives for data storage, connected to my PC by the included USB cable. When standing upright in the dock the drives are in open air so they never get as warm or hot as they might if installed inside a PC case.

Also cloned a couple of drives for backup copies of data and it worked smoothly. Just insert the drives, turn on the dock's power switch and away it goes. Seemed pretty fast.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Quality - Impressed

Pros: The device is solid and works very well as a USB Dock. Impressed with the transfer speed using a SATAIII 7200 Drive, easily able to hold over 99 MB/s in windows 7 which I found to be good considering it is hooked to a laptop USB 3.0. Not optimal conditions.

The Clone function works very well, You end up with a mirror of the original drive.

Cons: This is not a real con but more of a "Would Be Nice".

Eg, you have a 3 Tb Drive with 500 Mb on it used, it would be nice if the device was able to see 500Mb and allow a copy to a 1Tb Drive.

I understand how partitions work so I understand that my suggestion would greatly increase the level of complexity of the device.

It would also be interesting to have a GUI status monitor ( a simple TSR that the user could elect to install to monitor the drives and the disk cop function )
