1 out of 5 eggsFried a 2 TB HD!

This review is from: VANTEC NST-366S3-BK 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s to USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, Black

Pros: Whatever pros I might find in this device have been blown away by its frying of my HD.

Cons: I had the NexStar (with a 1 TB HD in it) connected to my computer, then I connected a USB 2 TB HD in order to transfer files to the NexStar - the USB HD was IMMEDIATELY fried! I tried to recover the files, but I couldn't. The drive wasn't ruined, but I had to reformat it and I lost 2 TB of files. As far as I can tell, the NexStar introduced an electrical surge that fried the HD's MFT, or something. Now I have to rebuild my 2 TB of files from 4 backups HDs and a cloud service. (And I'll lose some work and some files.) FUN! Will this happen again with the NexStar? Can I trust it to not fry my laptop or another connected HD?

Other Thoughts: THANKS VANTEC!!!

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: VANTEC NST-366S3-BK 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s to USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, Black

Pros: 1. Purchased in January 2015, for use with a 1TB WD Black hard drive, as a large "file transfer / backup drive" for various desktops in my home. It has worked very well every time it has been needed.

2. Easy installation of the drive in the unit.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Recently upgraded the unit with an older Samsung 1.5 TB drive (from an older computer). Has worked perfectly well with this drive as well.

1 out of 5 eggsWont recognize my 3 tb drive

This review is from: VANTEC NST-366S3-BK 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s to USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, Black

Pros: Recognizes 1 and 2 terabyte drives

Cons: I bought this specifically to work with a 3 terabyte drive (I have two such drives, one in an another enclosure working fine and a second one I bought this enclosure for.) This enclosure would not recognize either of them, while my older Vantec enclosure works with both, but that enclosure is no longer available for sale on New Egg so I bout this one. It did however work fine with my other drives several 1 terabyte and also 2 terabyte drives, but I needed it for the 3 which is why I bought it. :-(

Other Thoughts: Clearly has worked for others. I'm not sure where the failure is occurring for me. I tried connecting it to two separate computers and also tried two different 3 gig drives which I know work fine as they are both recognized in an older Vantec enclosure.

Update
I basically never used this enclosure since it did not do what I purchased it for but I also did not return it (big mistake) since i have some smaller drives that could be used with it should i need it, so kept it as a spare. Well today I decided to put one of my older drives in, worked for a few hours and then completely died. Tried another hard drive in it to be sure and this enclosure is dead as a door nail. What junk.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: VANTEC NST-366S3-BK 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s to USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, Black

Pros: - Setup is easy and instructions are pretty clear. Slide the drive in, close the case, do 4 screws, and plug it in. Good to go.
- USB 3.0 connection works fine
- Still working fine over a month later (admittedly only periodic use syncing backups)
- Metal case is a nice touch
- Comes with a vertical stand, which is nice for fitting it inside a cabinet

Cons: There are random extra screws in the packaging. Always makes you worry when you end up with extra screws.

Other Thoughts: Bottom line is that it's good value for the price. I bought this in order to continue using a 1 TB drive from an old desktop that died (probably 7 years old). The price is definitely worth it to recover a couple old files that your backup may have missed (TurboTax in my case...) and have a "new" external (basically just a secondary backup).

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible! Dead Unit on Arrival!

This review is from: VANTEC NST-366S3-BK 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s to USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, Black

Pros: There are no pros for this piece of junk.

Cons: This product is terrible. Does NOT work on arrival. Still doesn't work. I'm getting an RMA from this terrible seller of these products because it says QC Check Pass in side on the bottom of the tray, apparently they didn't check everything. Shame. Had to go with a Cheaper better name, and guess what - it WORKED!

Other Thoughts: Just avoid and go with Rosewill if you don't want any issues.

5 out of 5 eggsNeeded an enclosure for a 4tb drive.

This review is from: VANTEC NST-366S3-BK 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s to USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, Black

Pros: I needed an external enclosure that would support a 4tb drive. My old enclosure wasn't compatible with "advanced format" drives, which are basically any modern large drive. I used it to house a WD40PURX drive temporarily for upgrading my Tivo, and it worked perfectly for this purpose. My laptop only has USB 2.0 ports but this still worked perfectly.

Cons: The internal tray is plastic, like others have mentioned that is kinda cheapy, but if you are running a low speed drive like WD greens or purples, it is fine. Seriously with SSDs these days, is there any real reason to buy a 7200 rpm drive anymore?

2 out of 5 eggsFailed under 90 days

This review is from: VANTEC NST-366S3-BK 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s to USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, Black

Pros: Was working fine up until 6/15/2015

Cons: Purchased 3/30/2015 - failed 6/15/2015, following up to see if it will be supported under warranty. Verified the drive and power adapter are not the issue. Perhaps I have an exception. Vantec stuff has been good to me otherwise.

5 out of 5 eggsNice enclosure

This review is from: VANTEC NST-366S3-BK 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s to USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, Black

Pros: Good construction and materials
Easy set-up
Seems to run cool even in extended use

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Got this for back-ups with a WD Black 2 TB drive (from a large tower with a WD 3 TB drive).
As soon as I installed the 2 TB drive, I started to back up nearly 2 TB of music files, which took about 4-5 hours each day for two days. Throughout, the enclosure stayed reasonably cool and operated without any problems.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Enclosure

This review is from: VANTEC NST-366S3-BK 3.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s to USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, Black

Pros: 1: Metal
2: SATA 6Gbs
3: Led is optional

Cons: 1: Inner tray is somewhat brittle

Other Thoughts: This is a great drive from a good brand. I choose this because it was minimalistic, metal, and was able to support full SATA 3.0. I use it as a media drive and it has been working well since I've owned it.
