Of note, all brands of HDD enclosures I've built in the past (mainly SIIG's) were capable of spinning the hard drive once connected to a power source, even if it was not connected to the computer's USB port. Not so with this enclosure. Initially, I thought the enclosure was defective when it would not spin my HDD after turning on power. When I contacted the NexStar customer service, I was told the enclosure had to be connected to power AND to the USB port of a (booted) computer in order for it to recognize and spin the hard drive. Once I connected the enclosure to my laptop, it worked fine. When I shut down my laptop, the enclosure (and eventually the fan) shuts down and does not require turning off of the power at the back of the unit (this is a good feature). Pros: --Easy to install the HDD
--Separate on/off switch for fan control
--Very bright disk-access LED (for some it may be too bright)
--Brushed aluminum finish looks rich
--Very quiet operation

Other Thoughts: I installed a 7200rpm Seagate Barracuda, 500GB SATA III HDD in this enclosure. Of note, all brands of HDD enclosures I've built in the past (mainly SIIG's) were capable of spinning the hard drive once connected to a power source, even if it was not connected to the computer's USB port.
