2 out of 5 eggsBad Design

This review is from: D-Link DUB-1340 4-port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub

Pros: It's core function works. It is a usb 3.0 hub

Cons: Bad Design. The ports are upside down.
You would also think that the 1 2 3 4 dots would light up since they are transparent, but they don't.

What's the point of having the added dc plug if it doesn't charge anything unless the computer is on? Even if the computer is on it won't charge an Ipad or Iphone.

Not worth the money

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

This review is from: D-Link DUB-1340 4-port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub

Pros: None

Cons: Junk. Most of the time it is only recognized as a USB 2.0 Hub. Constantly throws power surge errors when plugging low current devices into it. Throughput is less then 20K a second in USB 2 or 3 mode.

Other Thoughts: Not even worth the cost of sending back. Design flaw. Non standard USB connector. Insufficient external power supply to handle multiple USB 3.0 external hard drives.

4 out of 5 eggsNice hub but has issues

This review is from: D-Link DUB-1340 4-port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub

Pros: Looks very nice sitting on my desk, and I always love when my usb ports have some extra current behind them.

Cons: upon a fresh reboot it will detect my usb 3.0 survivor and vantec usb 3 hd enclosure but after that I have to unplug and replug in the hub for the drives to show up, and that only works 1/2 the time, the rest of the time I have to reboot to be able to detect my drives.

Other Thoughts: solid unit, comes with high quality cable, and the red/blue power led looks pretty nice, if I had to buy another hub i'd probably buy the same one and pray that it didnt have the same issues.

4 out of 5 eggsOne design flaw

This review is from: D-Link DUB-1340 4-port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub

Pros: - 4 x USB 3.0 and it works
- Very tiny; the module itself is (obviously) 4 usb ports wide.
- The labelled usb 3.0 cable that comes with it is long enough for me. Maybe about a meter long?

Cons: - Not too many devices currently that make use of USB 3.0 speed
- The major design flaw (in my opinion) is that all of the ports are UPSIDE DOWN. Now, this is purely aesthetic in most cases but it really bugs me. If I were to put my wireless Logitech receivers (1x K800 kb, 1x G700 mouse) on 2 ports, they both would read "Logitech" upside down. Something more noticeable would be my ASUS USB-N53 wireless-n adapter attached to this thing -- the whole black diamond design and flashy light inside it is also flipped and all you see is the jibberish writing that should've stay on the bottom side.

Other Thoughts: - The power indicator LED is in the bottom near the back. Good or bad depending if the light bugs you (not a big deal, but the point is that it's at the back)
- I didn't get this from NEGG but I normally get most of my stuff from here. If you don't care for the upside down ports then by all means, get it if you want it for functionality. I personally would request for them to switch the ports the right way up and send me another one if I could.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to my previous review

This review is from: D-Link DUB-1340 4-port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub

Pros: See my previous review.

Cons: See my previous review.

Other Thoughts: The first unit I had, which I reviewed yesterday did in fact fail and begin to drop connections repeatedly after a few days of use. I replaced it earlier today and this one is working fine. Overall this hub is very fast. I will post back here if this one also fails.

Another thing I want to point out is that although it comes with a very hefty switched mode 5 volt/5 amp power supply, it is not required to use the hub. I use my DUB-1340 hub without the power supply because I have 4 self-powered USB 3.0 hard drives attached. No point in wasting electricity if I don't need to. Even an efficient switched mode power supply uses some current by just being plugged in.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Fast! Although mine is a bit flaky.

This review is from: D-Link DUB-1340 4-port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub

Pros: Using a USB 3.0 ext. hard drive 5400 RPM as the source copying to another identical drive on the same USB 3.0 hub I copied 5 GB of data with a transfer speed of 80MB/sec. It makes no difference whether the drives are on separate controllers, plugged into a USB 3.0 port by itself, or whether the drives are both plugged into the hub. If you are like me and move tons of data around you will find USB 3.0 MUCH faster the earlier technologies including even the latest Firewire iterations.

USB 3.0 speed of 4.8Gb/sec is a huge boost. At ten (10) times the speed of USB 2.0, the external hard drive bottleneck has moved from the connection speed to the speed limits of the hard drive itself.

PROS:
- Fast, even with 4 drives attached.
- 5 Volt, 5 Amp Switched Power Supply should provide ample power to devices that need it, while not being an electricity hog.

Cons: CONS:
- Only 3 ports gained (literature and packaging says it "provides four additional USB 3.00 ports for your PC").
- Reliability is in question.
- A bit expensive

NOTE: The DUB-1340 4-Port USB 3.0 hub worked great for 3 days. Today on the fourth day it is beginning to drop drives. For a while earlier I could not get the PC (Running Win 7 x64) to recognize either the hub or the drives connected to it. Right now it only shows two drives attached when in fact all four should be there. I just rebooted the hub again and they are all back. I will surely go exchange it tomorrow for a new one.

Biggest Con: Is how I am limited to structuring my comments by NewEgg to 1000 characters per section in this review. NewEgg, why not give me 3000 characters and let me use them as I see fit?
This review might read a bit out of order as I had to juggle things I wrote around to divide it so it would fit.

Other Thoughts: I bought this hub this past Monday and installed it right away. I have 7 USB 3.0 external Hard drives and only 4 USB 3.0 ports in my PC (PCI Add-on cards with 2-ports each). I tested transfer speeds every which way I could to see if there were performance differences between having the source and destination drives on one card vs. another, or between drives connected to this hub. The results were spectacular. USB 3.0 drive to USB 3.0 drive transfer speeds are phenomenal.

Using a RAID0 (Striped) source drive (10,000 RPM WD Raptors) with a throughput of 160MB/sec I copied 5.0 GB to the following drives:

- 5400 RPM (SATA 3GB/sec interface) - Transferspeed 55MB/sec
- 7200 RPM (SATA 3GB/sec interface) - Transfer speed 77MB/sec
- USB 2.0 5400 RPM ext. drive - Transfer speed 34MB/sec
- USB 3.0 5400 RPM ext. drive - Transfer speed 72MB/sec
