The IOGEAR GCS1802 features the exclusive asynchronous switching, which allows the user to independently switch applications between the connected computers. You can run an application on one computer while running another application on the other. Moreover, the integrated 2-port USB 2.0 hub is available for each computer to share multiple peripherals connected directly to the hub or via daisy chaining external powered USB 2.0 hubs. Access to such peripherals is performed on a one-at-a-time basis. Additionally, IOGEAR's DynaSync* makes the switch intelligent to read and remember the monitor's optimal display parameters and refresh rate. Switching between computers can be easily accomplished either by manually pressing the front panel push button port LEDs, entering hotkey combinations from the keyboard, or via a menu driven multilingual on-screen display (OSD) system. Finally, the audio ports allow for connecting powered PC speakers for stereo sound and a single microphone for audio input/output to each computer. (*IOGEAR's DynaSync provides the EDID support for Windows 7)

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't work as expected

Pros: Sound and video shared between computers
Standard functionality of keyboard and mouse shared between two computers (see specifics in "Cons")

Cons: This KVM was purchased for the company I work for, but I'm using my account to rate the product.

Printer on USB 2.0 port never worked on second computer (yes all the drivers were up to date): Tried two different computers and still never worked. It did work on the primary computer.

When I would power down the second computer, printer would print one page with a few symbols on it.

Wireless Keyboard and Mouse: Didn't fully support my Microsoft Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, to be fair says as much in the instruction manual, but this is literally the only KVM switch that I've used that didn't work with wireless keyboard and mouse.

Since didn't support wireless keyboard/mouse, had to use the manual switch to change between monitors and keyboard/mouse

Tech Support: Initially called Tech Support, which I rarely do, and was treated like I was a bother. I don't know if they guy had a bad day, or picked up the wrong line, but he was condescending and rude.

I purchased this switch specifically for the available USB 2.0 port so I could add a printer, and it never worked right. I went back to the IOGEAR KVM in the "other thoughts" section.

Other Thoughts: I was using the IOGEAR GCS632U which worked very well and I highly recommend. If you use a wireless keyboard mouse combination with one usb into the KVM you can use the remaining port for the printer, but it was only USB 1 so windows would throw a communications error which was just annoying to me.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for the inconvenience. Your comments will be forwarded to a manager for investigation. The GCS1802 is an emulated KVM so it will not work with some wireless keyboards and mice unless it is an IOGEAR wireless keyboard. In order for hot key operation and instantaneous recognition of the keyboard and mouse when switching computers, our KVMs emulate a standard wired 102 key keyboard and wired generic 2-button scroll wheel mouse. We can not guarantee the use of wireless (including Bluetooth), multifunction, gaming, integrated card readers, or programmable keyboards and mice. This KVM also requires a mouse and keyboard be connected to their respective console ports, so we cannot guarantee the use of docking stations, port replicators or USB / PS2 adapters.
To use the USB ports on the GCS1802 with a printer you need to make sure you press and hold the port selection button for 3-4 seconds to do a full focus switch. If you do not it will not switch the USB ports correctly.Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly what I needed

Pros: After screwing around with the junk that's out there in endless frustration of "it maketh me lie down beneath my desk connecting and disconnecting wires", I could tell instantly that this was a solid piece of work. I had one of the one-piece IOGear things that sort of worked until I unplugged my laptop when it was always a cr_pshoot as to whether it would come on again. A PC won't boot if it can't find its keyboard.

I then moved on the Belkin "Flip" was was total garbage. The peripherals and the monitor were always out of synch with one another. While marginally more solid-looking than the old IOGear I just didn't want to mess with diving under the desk. That's exactly why you want a KVM. (Plus at age 60, I'm getting old for that). And then the time on the phone with clueless tech support people who wonder about compatibility of different PCs. Hey - Tech Support - the KVM sits between the keyboard and the computer, so it shouldn't rely on software to process the keys. Compatibility should only be an issue with configuration software.

As I was waiting for this to arrive, I tried to imagine how I would constuct one of these babies if I had the time. It had everything I wanted - keyboard control, control on the unit itself and its own ROM-based configuration utility. Sweet.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent KVMP Switch

Pros: Solid construction, with a practical design. It took me about 30 minutes to set it up, working very methodically and routing cables through a furniture piece. It worked from the moment I powered up the two computers. I have to manually switch the old Toshiba laptop to activate its external VGA port every time I reboot. But left on, there is no need to do anything other than push the button on the switch, or (easier yet) use Hotkeys (ScrLK, ScrLk and Enter) to sequence the switch.

I have checked the peripherals, and the two USB ports switch along with the keyboard, video and mouse. They can be switched separately, too.

My desktop runs Windows 7 32 bit, and my old Toshiba Laptop is running Windows XP Professional. I need the laptop to run DayTimer 2000, my old PM program.

The switch is about 5" wide, 1.75" tall, and 3" deep. I needed about 7" of depth to accommodate the cables.

Cons: The print in the manual is fairly small. I used a magnifying glass, even with progressive contact lenses on. On the other hand, that saves on paper. Also, despite the rubber feet, the case can rock ever so slightly. However, with all the cables attached, it is rock solid in one place.

Other Thoughts: I am very happy with the switch. I have nearly instantaneous access to two computers, including 15 years of appointments, phone calls, and data stored in my DayTimer program.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent KVM

Pros: Solidly Constructed Unit, Excellent Fit and Finish, the custom cables are high quality and the VGA Cable connector has knobs on the connector making it easy to secure the vga cables.

I am giving this a 4 because were it not for the problems below I would keep this unit. I am nonetheless returning it due to the issues I have explained below.

Cons: This unit does not work with a logitech VX Revolution Mouse, with or without Mouse Emulation enabled. Also, I thought I would use the usb peripheral sharing port in the event that the mouse was not recognized through the actual console mouse port. But this also does not work. The issue of Logitech Mice and KVM's is ridiculous! I am not blaming this on Iogear as other KVM's also have this same problem, and logitech themselves state that their products do not work well with KVM switches, which is ridiculous.

Other Thoughts: How could Logitech and these manufacturers of KVM's not get together and figure out a way to make these devices work properly? Its just a mouse for pete's sake. Also, people get used to mapping the buttons on the mouse, and people have multiple computers, I don't know how or why someone hasn't stepped up to the plate and come to market with a KVM switch that either tricks the logitech software or otherwise enables proper functionality.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and sorry about your experience. From your description above, it sounds like you have a bad unit. Disabling mouse emulation on mouse port and peripheral ports should both be working fine with the mouse. Please feel free to contact our tech support at 1(866)946-4327 and we would be glad to assist you. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.
