The GCS1808KITU KVM is a combo VGA switch that includes 8 USB KVM cables (4 x 6ft and 4 x 10ft).

Access and control of up to 64 computers from a single console (keyboard, mouse, and monitor). As many as 8 additional switches can be cascaded* bringing the total number of connected computers to 64 computers that can be controlled from a single keyboard-monitor-mouse console. A custom ASIC (patent pending) provides an auto-sensing function that recognizes the position of each station on the installation, eliminating the need to manually set the position with DIP switches. Additionally, the GCS1808KITU features high density SPHD 15-pin instead of the usual 25-pin connectors thus allowing for a compact design and installation in a 1U system rack. (*Cascade compatible with GCS1716 for control over 128 computers)

The GCS1808KITU includes one USB port located on the front panel for easy access and sharing of any USB peripherals. Setup is fast and easy; plugging cables into their appropriate ports is all that is needed. The switch supports both USB and PS/2 connections for the console and computers. The GCS1808KITU intercepts keyboard input directly, thus eliminating the need for any software configuration. Switching between computers can be easily accomplished either by manually pressing the front panel push button port LEDs, entering hotkey combinations from the keyboard, or via a menu driven multilingual on-screen display (OSD) system. A convenient auto-scan feature permits automatic scanning and monitoring of activities on all connected.

5 out of 5 eggs1 Year Later and No Problems

Pros: No Updating Firmware, just plugged it in and hooked up 6 computers and no problems. It was installed in a security office at a hospital and it is used multiple times daily with no complaints.

Cons: When switching from one device to the next, the interface looks DOS like. Can't remember why but the guards did have trouble learning at first what direction to scroll from device to device. No problems after they got used to it.

4 out of 5 eggsGood design. Works well. Server Environment.

Pros: Works well with 8 servers hooked up. Don't use all the bells and whistles. Never upgraded the firmware. Just plugged it in and it works.

Cons: -1 egg for occasionally losing the mouse when working. The mouse will just disappear and you have to move it around a bit to come back. Not bad, but still occasionally irritating.

Other Thoughts: Good unit for the price. You shouls ground the unit. The short cable is for grounding to your rack, which this is designed to be installed in, not just lying on a desktop somewhere.

1 out of 5 eggsDisplay resolution only 1024 X 768

Pros: Unit included all cables

Cons: Zero support from Product Managers at IOGear.

Tech support was helpful but after the problem was passed up to manager level I have had zero response from the manufacturer.

Other Thoughts: This problem has occurred with both a Linux PC (HP Model 6200) and a Windows XP system (HP Model DC5800).

I have a Viewsonic monitor Model VS13239.

RMA has been issued and KVM is being returned for refund.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for the inconvenience. We apologize for the delay in your response. If you can email the information again to support@iogear.com , We will forward this issue to the product manager again. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

4 out of 5 eggsSeems to work, some issues

Pros: This is a good price for a KVM with cables. The picture is very clear on a 1920x1080 screen, simple to setup, comes with rack mount ears and nice big pads for desktop usage. Computer selection available via keystroke to access OSD or front panel.

Cons: Unit doesn't translate PS2 to USB well. It drops keystrokes- if you're gaming, pressing shift while holding down W shouldn't drop the W. That's what this unit does (granted, it's a PS2 keyboard and connected to the computer using a USB cable). I worked around this by using a Ziotek PS2 Keyboard to USB Adapter I had. It works fine now.

Additionally, the unit uses an external power transformer which does not supply ground. You are expected to use a very short green wire to ground the unit. This is a hassle, but not a product killer. More like a stupid design decision. It would have been much better to internalize the power supply and use a grounded cable. As it stands, the unit requires a screwdriver to be able to move it much (the ground wire is about 4' long).

Other Thoughts: I purchased this unit because my old KVM didn't want to work with a USB gaming mouse. This one does. Using an old school PS2 IBM Model M keyboard works, but it doesn't translate properly, you'll want a PS2 Keyboard to USB Adapter.

The cables that come with it are (1) USB + PS2 console cable, (1) 6' PS2 computer cable, (4) 6' USB computer cables, and (4) 10' USB computer cables. That means if you need to hook up computers using PS2 you're only going to get cables to do 1, and it needs to be within 6' of the unit. You can certainly purchase cables if that's a problem, but be warned that most of the computer cables are USB.

All in all the unit feels solid. The ground cable is going to be annoying whenever I want to move this since it requires a screwdriver to disconnect and really chains the unit in place.

5 out of 5 eggsReview

Pros: Works very well. Can program server names into the KVM so when it brings up the list of servers attached you can cursor to the server desired and press enter.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: If you have some legacy USB ports you may need to use the PS2 ports for a master keyboard rather than a USB keyboard otherwise the older servers may hang at boot time... I found this out after pulling 16 hairs out...

4 out of 5 eggsIOGEAR GCS1808KITU With USB Cables

Pros: We installed this KVM about a week ago and it is working as advertised. Having one cable that includes the video and USB connections helps clean up some of the cable mess, and the OSD is not obtrusive like other KVMs we have used.

Cons: 1) It is recommended that the KVM be grounded with a ground wire. The ground wire included with the KVM is very short. It would have been easier if the unit came with a three prong plug to eliminate the extra ground wire.
2) We are not sure if it is the computer, monitor, or the KVM; but the monitor does not go into sleep mode while on the KVM. We have not tried to update the firmware yet.

Other Thoughts: We are using it with six servers and it is working great. We are not disappointed.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked for two weeks

Pros: Great product if it worked

Cons: After about two weeks of use, the hub stopped working and the power light began flashing on and off. I unplugged it for a day or so in hopes that it would reset itself but to no avail. Just sits their flashing on and off and doesn't work anymore.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and sorry about your experience. There are different reason casuing all the LEDs to flash, 1) it could be you trigger the firmware upgrade mode within OSD by accident, 2) it could be you flip the F/W upgrade recovery switch to recover mode by accident 3) it would be the unit was crashed during the firmware upgrade process or 4) it’s simply a bad unit. Please verify if it’s case no. 1 or 2, if not, since this unit is backed by IOGEAR’s 3 year warranty, please feel free to contact our tech support at 1(866)946-4327 and we would be glad to assist you. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.
