IOGEAR's GCS1642 2-Port Dual View DVI KVMP Switch marks a leap in KVM functionality by combining IOGEAR's DynaSync with the widescreen graphics resolution of today's 30+ inch monitors, supporting Dual View / Dual Link DVI, 2560 x 1600 (higher than 1080p HD) and 3D graphics. Two Dual-View / Dual Link display computers can be accessed and controlled from a single console running dual-displays.

The GCS1642 also features two USB 2.0 peripheral ports for asynchronously sharing USB devices between your computers. A powered USB hub may be attached to the peripheral ports for added functionality. Audio and microphone support makes sharing speakers and a microphone a convenience for the users which serves as an extra value.

This unique KVMP can increase efficiency and save equipment cost for applications where high resolution, 3D graphics, large or widescreen dual-display monitors are required, for situations such as CAD/CAM, Desktop Publishing / Graphic Design / Video Editing, Medical / Surgical / Diagnostic Displays, and High-end Gaming. The GCS1642 offers an out-of-box solution including all cabling required for “Set-up and Go”!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks very well in my setup

Pros: It work as advertised. I use it to switch between my Linux and Windows workstations. The Linux box uses an nVidia GT740, while the Windows box uses a Quadro FX 5600. The Quadro forced me to use DVI instead of miniDP. Monitor A is a Dell U2713HM (2560x1440) and monitor B is a Sun v4 24" (1920x1200). This replaces a previous Iogear KVM (GCS982) I used to only switch monitor A (B was always on the windows box).

I like that it has a USB switch integrated, and that the connections to the computers use a single USB connection instead of one each for keyboard and mouse. The front-panel USB port is very handy as well.

I was surprised by how heavy the unit is - that's a good thing given that the cables are so stiff and can otherwise cause the switch to "walk" all over the desk.

The best part of the unit is the front-panel switches that let me easily switch over just the KVM (and leave audio on one box). The USB port on front lets me plug in my phone or my Logitech wireless mouse for charging. The KVM audio doesn't add any noise (a complaint with my old unit).

Cons: One must follow the setup instructions to the letter, including the order of powering up components. I didn't follow the exact order at first, and ended up with only monitor A working. Starting over made things work. I believe this is because the KVM must read the monitor EDIDs one at a time.

Mouse emulation did not work with my wireless Performance MX mouse receiver. It did work when plugged into the USB ports. Once I got things set up, I disabled mouse emulation and everything worked. I expected this to be the case, since my GCS982 didn't work with this mouse either, as long as emulation was enabled. The main drawback to disabling emulation is that switching becomes a bit slower (computer must enumerate the mouse each time).

Requires external power from the included AC adapter. Doesn't work with just USB power.

Other Thoughts: Wish they'd include some cable tidies (velcro) to manage the huge mass of cables required.

If the unit was a little deeper, I would have put it *under* my U2713's stand. As of now, it lives on top and looks a bit odd. Maybe time for some carpentry? :)

2 out of 5 eggsSpecs did not indicate limited keyboard and mouse compatibility. Firmware no longer upgradable.

Pros: Easy setup

Cons: Only standard keyboard and two-button mouse are supported. Could not get it to work with multimedia keyboard and multi-button mouse. Got instructions from IOGear tech support to disable mouse emulation but did not solve the problem. The device is obsolete so the firmware cannot be upgraded (apparently, a newer version of the same model, which has a DCC port instead of regular jack, is upgradable).

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for the inconvenience. The GCS1642 is an emulated KVM. The built in emulation is looking for a basic 104 key wired keyboard. There is no guarantee with anything else unless it is an IOGEAR brand. IOGEAR brand keyboards have been tested and work with IOGEAR KVM's , this includes wireless. Our KVM’s emulate a standard 102 key, keyboard and generic 2-button scroll wheel mouse. The reason for this emulation is to allow the hot key functions to operate. A side effect of the emulation is that in most cases the special key sequences required for gamming, and key programming will not translate correctly through the KVM, for gamming we recommend connecting directly to the computer.

Although our KVMs will work with most wireless keyboard mouse sets, we cannot promise an individual multimedia / programmable keyboard and mouse set will work through the KVM.

Due to the large number of manufacturer's and each manufacturer's wide range of models it is impossible to maintain any meaningful compatibility list. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: I have my desktop and laptop connected to my dellU2711 and NEC225WXM without any issue. Installation was easy. The two computers recognized the monitors' resolution, keyboard, and mouse.

Cons: The buttons used to switch between the two computers are not very sensitive and I need to hold the switch while pressing. them. I also do not like the fact that it is not easy to power off the switch when not in use.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Best KVMs

Pros: Works great.
Supports 1920x1200 (and then some).
Good cables. Plenty long. (6ft or so)
Looks nice.

Cons: Somewhat large for a KVM, but it does need room for all those connectors.
Expensive (but worth it).

Other Thoughts: I've been using KVMs for about 20 years and have had many types and brands. There's a reason I always choose IOGear KVMs these days. They work and work well. I'm using this one to share my dual 24" 1920x1200 monitors, keyboard, mouse, and speakers between my Win8 game machine and my Linux server. I do wish it had one of those small remote buttons like many other IOGear KVMs have, but that's a minor quibble. The keyboard switching works fine. Although it comes with cables, you still need a pair of DVI cables to connect the second video card outputs to the KVM. You should already have these with your monitors, but it's worth mentioning.

3 out of 5 eggsgood while it lasted.

Pros: 1920X1080 default.
digital connections.
ease of use

Cons: lasted a year and the it started having problems recognizing the second monitor. Then the usb went went as well.

USB 3 would have been nice for the price.

Manufacturer Response:

First, thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. The product should not behave as you described. Since the unit is backed by IOGEAR's 3 year warranty feel free to contact our customer support at 1-866-946-4327 or email us: Again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

5 out of 5 eggsFollow Instructions

Pros: Follow the enclosed instructions on the correct order of hooking up the computers. I failed to do it the first time, and became frustrated. Then I followed the instructions (found some excellent ones on web site) and it has been working ever since.

Cons: At first it took a little while for the computers to recognise the USB keyboard & Mouse.

Other Thoughts: I am going to order another one.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Product, Crumby tech support

Pros: Supports high resolution monitors, very flexible and will work with old PS2 inputs as well as wireless devices

Cons: Does not support Windows keyboard or mouse wake up pass through. Special keyboard functions will not be passed to computer.

Other Thoughts: This is a good solution for those looking for high resolution support (2560x1600)w/dual monitors. Even though IOgear says wireless mice or not supported they are full of cr@p. This product works just fine with Microsoft wireless intellmouse units. Also the ps2 to usb adapters work just fine with a ps2 keyboard as well. I called their tech support to check to see if my configuration would work they said no. Wrong, dual monitors on DVI, Microsoft wireless mouse and Northgate PS2 keyboard works just fine. I took a chance because of the Newegg return policy and I am glad that I did. This product would have been given 5 stars if the IOGear tech support wasn't so lame and if the keyboard/mouse windows support worked!

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This device is small and comes with all the cables needed.

It's probably the best one out there for dual monitors setup.

I have plugged in ThinkPad USB 3.0 Port Replicator into it and it works fine. And then I have my desktop plugged in. So I switch from Work laptop and my home desktop in a matter of a second or two.

Cons: The major cons for this device is that it doesn't support the multimedia shortcut buttons on my keyboard. So email, volume knob on my keyboard doesn't work when using the IOGEAR device. So now I'm searching for the little calculator built into windows when before I just hit the button on the keyboard. IOGEAR knowledge base says that they are working on licensing, but I doubt it. I have yet to call them.

The other thing is that any tap of my mouse keeps waking up my desktop from sleep mode. I disabled it in Windows from doing that. However it keeps waking up my desktop from sleep and I think its because of the emulation from the KVMP.

The 3rd thing is that port 2 does have some issues from some reason and that seems to be a common complaint. I just jostle it. Sometimes there is a delay in the secondary screen displaying.

The most frustrating thing is that the volume knob not working on my keyboard along with the other multimedia functions.

I don't see why they can't just pass those through.

Other Thoughts: I don't mind the beep at all. I can't see why it's everyone's complaint.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for the inconvenience. I will have this information sent to the product manager for review. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR

5 out of 5 eggsThis is great!!

Pros: This works perfectly with my 2 Dell monitors, and my 2 PCs with both have 2 DVI outputs (no adapters anywhere). It used to take me 20 seconds to switch via Dell's monitor menus (thanks Dell), but with this KVM it's about 2 seconds. The ability to switch the display, USB and audio independently is great too. Has a low profile on my desk, and as a bonus I now have USB and audio jacks within arm's reach! The supplied cables are very nice, and I haven't seen any change in graphics or video quality.

This nifty gadget will save me about 5 minutes per workday, or about 16 hours a year.

Cons: I can't get the Hotkey Settings Mode (HSM) to work. I just need it so I can turn off the beep.

Other Thoughts: Great price from NewEgg.
