A KVM switch (Keyboard-Video-Mouse) is a major boon to anyone who has to work with more than one computer. You can change computers without having to give up the keyboard and monitor you're already using, sometimes via the keyboard itself. Imagine the space and money you'll save, only having to buy one monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

After saying that, KVM switches stop being exciting pretty quickly, so let's look at things to shop for. Will it switch your speakers, too? How about your microphone? Is it USB only, or can it handle older connections? Hardware button, keyboard command control, or both? Does it draw its power from the computer, or does it need a power adapter? How many computers do you need to switch? (Most KVM switches will handle two computers; some can handle more.)

The TRENDNET TK-407K is a 4-port USB KVM switch that lets you manage four PCs with just one set of keyboard, monitor and mouse. Separate sets of KVM cables are included for easy installation and providing power to the KVM switch, eliminating the need for a power adapter. Is this the switch for you? Check it out and see!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Brand, Great Product

Pros: Does exactly what is expected of it. Never had any problems with it.

Cons: The software (not required) seems a bit iffy.

Other Thoughts: I had never heard of TendNet before I started working at my current company. At first, I thought they were just a cheap no-name sort of brand, but we have several of their products (KVMs and switches) and everything works great (or better than the higher priced competition).

My boss just got me an upgrade from the 2-port to the 4-port KVM and they all work excellently.

3 out of 5 eggsMonitor not being recognized?

Pros: Price is great, Best Buy had a 2 port KVM switch for three dollars more than this 4 port. Runs great with my macbook and my HP desktop however, my ASUS netbook (purchased a month ago from NewEgg) doesn't seem to be cooperating quite as easily (see Cons).

Cons: My Asus Eee PC S101B will not recognize the external monitor when running through the KVM. I've tried everything I can think of, (PC video driver updates, monitor driver updates) and I'm still left here staring at a blank secondary monitor. When plugging the monitor in directly through the VGA port in the back of my netbook it works perfectly and recognizes it immediately but when running through the KVM the keyboard and mouse work just fine but it will not recognize the secondary monitor no matter how many times I reboot or reinstall drivers.

Other Thoughts: Other than my one major issue above this unit works great with my other two computers. Only other thing I can think of was mentioned many times, the multi-sided input and output makes for a messy setup.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap, Reliable

Pros: Has worked solidly for over two years with only minor inconvenience. Dead simple.

Cons: Absolutely will not lay flat on my desk. Swtching between VM windows can trigger the hot key for switching

Other Thoughts: At this point it seems like one or two of the KVM ports gives me wavey video out. There's always an artifact or scanlines. It makes it very hard to work with any machines that aren't console based. It was cheap when I bought it, and has lasted reliably for at least two years so I've got no complaints. I wouldn't buy this again though because it will not lay flat.

4 out of 5 eggsNice cheap KVM

Pros: Cheap, cables are provided, buttons work well

Cons: Cables on all sides, Can take a few moments for keyboard/mouse to click in, had some strange issues with VMWare

Other Thoughts: Great KVM for the price. I like the separate buttons for each device instead of one for cycling through them. After switching it can take some time for the mouse and keyboard to start working, but not all the time. The biggest inconvenience is the cords come from all sides. That is a small issue still, but something to consider. I also had VMWare cause problems with it. It would make it cycle to the next device whenever I opened a VMware machine. Don't know if this is typical or not.

1 out of 5 eggsdon't buy this

Pros: small form factor. manual switching buttons. cables included.

Cons: 1. (already posted in another review) The hot key cycle will stop at any computer that is connected, whether powered up or not. If that computer is not powered up, then the keyboard loses power and the hot key stop working. User must manually select a working computer from this KVM's own buttons.
2. (related to #1) If user disconnects a computer (such as undocking a laptop) while it is selected by the this KVM, then same "loses power and hot key dies" situation occurs.
3. This KVM does not simulate a keyboard/mouse USB connection for the non-selected computers. So each time the KVM switches to another computer, that computer then must restart the keyboard/mouse driver (as if the Kbd/Ms) was was unplugged and plugged in all over again.
4. (already in another review) Cables route to all 4 sides. Does not make for clean, tidy desktop.
5. included cables are rather short. does not work well when PC's are under a desk and access is from behind.

4 out of 5 eggsTK-407k 4 port KVM

Pros: Works perfectly - this time. I shelved it when I tried using it with a PS/2 kybd/mouse and it did not switch properly or provide full functionality. I use a Logitech illuminated kybd and M500 mouse - bith wired because I got tired of having to change batteries at the most inoportune times. Setpoint software works on ALL FOUR connected systems and I have full program functionality of buttons and keys. Avocent, Belkin, Rose, & Raritan ALL told me their switches would not do this - OR that it was not tested/supported. I am not using keyboard switching, just hitting the button on the KVM to switch to a system. There is VERY LITTLE lag for the kybd/mouse to be recognized after a switchover. I can pretty much use them instantly. The switch is small so does not require a lot of desk space. The INCLUDED cables with one connector to the switch are great.

Cons: I would be MUCH happier if ALL the connectors, including console, were on the back of the switch. It would make things a LOT tidier rather than having cables poking out in all four directions.

Other Thoughts: Considering the cost, this is a great little KVM. I paid a LOT more for the old PS/2 KVM it's replacing.

2 out of 5 eggsStop Already!

Pros: Small Form Factor, 4 Ports

Cons: Utility does not work correctly with Vista or Windows 7. No new software support since 2006. IT CONSTANTLY SWITCHES AUTOMATICALLY. It has been doing this since I purchased but I have finally had enough. I won't even bother trying to give this away.

Other Thoughts: Unless you want a severe lesson in patience do not by this.

4 out of 5 eggsTK-400

Pros: I bought the PS2 version of this Trendnet kvm switch 2 or 3 years ago and it has been reliably doing its job since. I usually have used only 2 ports. The price for this is about half of what I recall paying. I occasionally pull out the spare cable sets to use the video cables independently

Cons: As someone pointed out, the wire arrangement can be awkward, especially when you have more than 2 computers hooked up. I keep mine on a bottom shelf next to the cpu.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Has 4 Ports, 2 USB Connections, Cables are included, No loss of quality at 1600x1200 or 1920x1080 even when using an (high quality) VGA extension cable.

Cons: Awkward design with cables on all sides. Keyboard shortcuts don't work with Mac. Sometimes I have to disconnect all cables, then reconnect to reset the device.

Other Thoughts: I have mine securely velcro-ed under my desk so its not a problem if I have to reach down to switch away from my Mac or occasionally remove a cable. I knew both those limitations before purchase. I'd purchase the same product again.
