Tripp Lite's USB 2.0/eSATA Hard Drive Dock gives you a quick and easy way to set up an external hard drive storage system. Plug the docking station into an available USB port on your computer or eSATA port, and pop in a 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drive for an instant external storage device. Far easier than installing the hard drive internally or in a caddy, the USB/SATA Dock is easy to use, convenient and practical. Compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Win7. Includes 100-240V AC Adapter, 4-ft. USB 2.0 A-B cable, 7-pin eSATA cable. No disk drives are included with this unit. Tripp Lite Limited One Year Warranty.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: Compact, nice looking, has an eSATA port (which is MUCH faster than USB 2.0), easy to set up, good quality on-off switch (NOT an in and out button to break down the road), and Tripp Lite's reputation for quality. Easily recognized by my computer's CMOS and BIOS. Sets in the SATA connections inside the dock fairly well.

Cons: Files already on a hard drive in this docking device could be READ; unfortunately, it proved to be difficult to WRITE anything to a drive while it was in the Tripp Lite. I have no idea why. I cloned Windows XP to my drive before putting it in the docking device, but booting from it while it was in the device was impossible. So, the Tripp Lite Quick Dock proved to be largely useless. It was disappointing!

Other Thoughts: Your hard drive sticks well up into the air above the Tripp Lite Quick Dock, but the drive still gets pretty hot. I guess I just have to spend more and get a genuine external hard drive case, with a fan. (I have a generic case with its own power supply and fan, and the 2TB SATA 3 Seagate drive in it reads, writes, and boots up just fine.)

5 out of 5 eggsSimple and versatile unit

Pros: Very versatile unit. Has both esata and usb connections and is external AC powered. Can be used with both 3.5" and 2.5" internal sata drives. It can be used for testing and formatting drives, for backups or data transfers, and can be left plugged in and used as an additional hard drive for laptops or small form factor desktops with no room for an additional hard drive. It is a simple design and appears to be well made.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I have used various Tripp Lite products over the years and have found them to generally be of good quality and reliable.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid, reliable

Pros: Good quality construction, decent power adapter that supplies reliable power, and nice to have eSATA and USB ports. Being able to plug in a 2.5" or 3.5" drive is also a plus. Power switch is a plus since I leave one of these plugged in all the time, but powered off. Also the unit works great both in Windows and when on a system booted to GParted from a CD.

Cons: You have to be a little careful when inserting drives, as there are no guides to assist you. The spring-loaded flaps at the time give you a good idea where to place drives, but if you change the angle too much you could easily snap off the connectors on the unit or on your drive. Otherwise not difficult to use. The convenience and reliability of this unit far outweigh this con.

Other Thoughts: Two of these were purchased on my workplace's Newegg account (not this one).

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Solidly built, including on/off switch. Comes with good eSATA cable as well as USB A-B cable. Recognized immediately (Win7 x64), no driver nonsense. Comparatively compact for a 2.5"/3.5" bay. Exactly what I needed.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I run VMWare virtual machines off an internal hard drive that I mount in an external eSATA bay. I have several such bays scattered around my various desks. Performance with this one is great, no concerns.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Made by Tripp-Lite. This is a durable piece of hardware. Read a few reports of the other products like this sold here detailing bad power on/off switches. Well, this product's power switch is very durable. The unit is sturdy, the SATA interface is easy and functional. The USB transfer rate was at the high end speed for USB 2.0. I have several laptops that need backing up. This product will allow backups at various locations easily.

Cons: none after trying several sized SATA drives.

Other Thoughts: When first connecting this product to any new machine, plug into the USB port without any drive. The system should install the windows drivers. Next, power off the unit, put a bare drive into the unit and then power back on. The computer will then relate to the hard drive added. I'm not into the hot-swapping, but for backups and a great product that is durable, you can't beat this one. I also have a few Tripp-Lite ISO-Bar power protection devices. The warranty is outstanding by the company.
